A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.
Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:
- Both “200” and “160” are 2 minutes in microwave math
- When you’re a kid, you don’t realize you’re also watching your mom and dad grow up.
- More dreams have been destroyed by alarm clocks than anything else
Rules
- All posts must be showerthoughts
- The entire showerthought must be in the title
- No politics
- If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
- A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
- Posts must be original/unique
- Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS
If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.
Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.

Catholicism and protestantism have a long history of war and discrimination between them. It's arguable how much of that was actually about religion, but it certainly makes it easier to motivate the masses. It's less nowadays because most people in the west don't take religion seriously anymore, but I'd assume that US evangelicals still have strong opinions on Christians who believe the wrong thing. Not to mention all the Christians outside of the west (i.e. Africa, South America), who actually outnumber westerners.
I know about the 30 years war and whatnot, and it might have been necessary to at least mention the Troubles as a partially religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants that spawned the biggest terrorist attacks in the UK, or perhaps more noteworthy the relationship between Sunni and Shia Muslims and their majority countries...
But be fucking for real. If the West just doesn't care about religion any more, we wouldn't have religious discrimination. Do Catholics get more assaulted for their Religion than Muslims in the US? Are South American Catholics absolutely viscous when it comes to Christian Heretics but the same people are tolerant to Vodou? Are there any Evangelical Terror attacks in Kenya I missed?

Compared to South American and Africa, yes, most western countries are very secular societies nowadays and organized christianity has heavily declined, even a lot of places in the USA are rather secular nowadays.
I'd argue that anti-muslim violence in western countries is motivated more by general xenophobia and racism than religion, similar to how German Nazis weren't motivated by deep religiosity when they genocided Jews.
