This has nothing to do with the child and everything to do with the parents.

[–] The_v@lemmy.world 32 points 1 week ago (8 children)

Remember the only qualification to become a parent is functional gonads. No education, training, or proof of competency and aptitude is required.

Which is why shit parents often resort to physically assaulting their children. It's because the are too ignorant of actual parenting techniques and methods to know otherwise.

"My parents spanked me and I turned out fine"...

No you fucking idiot, you did not turn out fine. You are beating a helpless child because you don't know shit about parenting.

[–] meco03211@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago

I got spanked and I turned out fine. And by that I mean I'm not having kids cause fuck all that noise.

[–] isleepinahammock@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I don't think people are here advocating beating children. They're advocating physically forcing the kid to sit down. That's just restraining an unruly passenger. It's not a punishment.

That's not a children problem. That's a parents problem.

[–] Psythik@lemmy.world 32 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Seriously, just toss the little shit into the seat and buckle them up. Why is this so difficult for some parents to do? Kids weigh next to nothing; just pick them up and force them to comply.

Edit: Downvoted by ~~two~~ six bad parents who are afraid to control their children.

[–] nullspace@lemmy.world 19 points 1 week ago

They can tie down unruly adult passengers before they're arrested, but they can't restrain a kid climbing over seats?

[–] Abyssian@lemmy.world 15 points 1 week ago (5 children)

I think if I had done something like that and refused to listen I might have ended up with all 4 limbs broken. That's probably not the best way to deal with the situation either, but surely there's some level of middle ground.

If my offspring is being such a demon that we can't stay on the plane, I guess the trip's cancelled.

Of course since mine is currently a hyperactive 2 year old, we're just not going on any flights any time soon. In a few years if things haven't gotten better, I'll have the lil' demon checked for ADHD as I have it myself, just lucky enough to be inattentive rather than hyperactive myself.

So far I've gotten through all this hell without any physical punishment whatsoever by 1) avoiding situations where said demon spawn has opportunities to be an even bigger demon (hence no flights), 2) being very clear about what "no" and "stop" mean and 3) making good use of a more stern voice when something's wrong, to the point that a stern "no" is met with pouting and acceptance rather than protest most of the time. Also most of the time I do say no, I also explain why something shouldn't be done. It's pretty damn difficult being a single parent of a barely verbal sonic the hedgehog and I'm sure my methods are far from perfect, but I'm just hoping that I get more things right than wrong.

I also think that boy's parents have no excuse. I've gotten my kid to behave fairly well compared to a year ago, I'm still not going on a plane any time soon. That boy is at least a few years older. You know your kid's personality by that time for sure. If you know it's going to be hell, then just don't fly with him unless it's an absolute necessity (which it rarely is).

[–] Madzielle@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I also have a severe adhd kid, and yeah. The moment he made a fuss I couldnt control, we'd have been off that plane.

Some people just don't discipline their kids at all. All 3 of my friends kids were fucking monsters until they got to be like 11 or 12. Anytime they were told no it would turn into an immediate tantrum until they folded and gave the kid at least part of what they wanted. I never saw them without their parents around but I heard their grandparents make comments about how they didn't act like that when they had them because it didn't work. Their mother also would get pissed off if anyone else told them to stop doing something bad or declined to give them something they wanted "because they're autistic" which as far as I know they were never diagnosed and I never saw any other signs of.

[–] UnequalExchange@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

i swear sometimes you can just 'see' through their behaviour the adults who were never disciplined at all and were allowed to do everything with abandon. Everything - including completely cancelling a flight of 150 passengers and being told its not their fault when it clearly was....

Every time I did something like this my parents ensured that I 'eventually obeyed' . And YES they did go overboard most of the time in most of these situations cause they are not the best of parents , sadly. But you have to find the middle ground when youre dealing with children in situatiins like these. Tell the kid:

"You enjoy when we fly out to see aunty right?" The kid: "well...yeah." "OK! So you have 3 options. Either stay in your seat and be quiet until the end of the flight, Ill duct tape you to the seat to ensure you dont move anywhere, or Ill take both of us off this flight right now and youll never get to see ANYONE for the next 3 years cause youll be grounded for the next 3 years....Pick Now!"

Theres a notable amount of situations where a child / teen will not learn anything until you or even society forces them to learn something. People get mad when we convict some people to life in prison without parole but there are some so thoroughly-incorrectly-raised adult-children out hrre who you HAVE to give a life sentence cause it would take them no less thsn 100 years to learn the lesson(s) they need to learn.

"Police your chidren...or the world will."

My father would have literally sat on me. I know this because he did it. Several times.

[–] Abyssian@lemmy.world 12 points 1 week ago

Babysitting has been a cultural norm for decades now. It's still widely practiced, so I have to give him credit for keeping up on the science.

[–] daddycool@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

If I had behaved like that, my parents would have kicked me out of the plane without a parachute. And if I survived that, I could walk home bare foot in the snow. And my room had better be cleaned when they got home.

Why wasn’t the family just escorted off the plane? Canceling the whole flight seems excessive.

[–] destructdisc@lemmy.world 94 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (3 children)

They were.

Porter said the aircraft returned to the terminal, where the passengers (as in the kid and the accompanying parent) were asked to leave the plane and their baggage was removed. The airline said the additional time required to complete those steps and refile the flight plan meant the flight could not depart before Victoria International Airport’s (YYJ) runway closed at 12:30 a.m. As a result, the flight was cancelled.

[–] CuddlyCassowary@lemmy.world 20 points 1 week ago

Oh thanks! I didn’t even notice the link to the actual article. Not quite awake yet…

[–] Smaile@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 week ago

Wow, I'd be livid

I'd lose my shit, especially if I had a connection to catch

[–] socsa@piefed.social 5 points 1 week ago

I'm surprised the family made it out of there in one piece. No jury would convict you for taking that sucker punch.

[–] betterdeadthanreddit@lemmy.world 30 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Family couldn't sit him down, put the seatbelt on, and hold his hands on an armrest so he can't un-buckle? Must be one strong kid.

[–] ICastFist@programming.dev 43 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Or, the more likely explanation, the parents are permissive shits who think they should never make little timmy uncomfortable

And it's everyone else's kids who are inconveniencing them

[–] waitingtech@lemmy.world 24 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

In the end, there are some pretty large questions:

  1. How much did this cost (presumably) the airline?
  2. Who pays?
  3. Are the culprits (mother & son) on a no-fly list now?

If the answer to # 2 is us through elevated ticket prices then it's a problem. It either takes a village to raise a child and pay for their mistakes therefore societal norms are individually enforceable, or, it is exclusively the parents responsibility to raise the child and pay for the mistakes. It must be one or the other, there is no in-between.

That child totally alpha'd everyone hard. He got his way and 150 losers didn't. Future president.

Parent your goddamn children.

[–] _lilith@lemmy.world 16 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I have a vivid memory of a parental figure placing a hand on the back of my neck and like pinching the fingers super hard when I was doing dumb shit. Is that not a thing anymore?

[–] TemplaerDude@sh.itjust.works 19 points 1 week ago (10 children)

"Join us"?

People do start out not having kids, so to "join us" would mean........ they have kids AND GET RID OF THEM. (ಠ_ಠ)

If the parents weren't a couple of shitbirds, that wouldn't have happened. Not everyone should have kids, even those already with them.

[–] Thebeardedsinglemalt@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

It's times like this where it should be legal to just straight up lunch the parents.

Another appropriate time is At a brewery where the kids grab 4 board games, dump them over a table trying to play then abandoning them so they can run up and down the corn hole boards while throwing the bags at each other

[–] zarkanian@sh.itjust.works 6 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Cannibalism seems a bit extreme.
