Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

They made a huge mistake

doubt

That implies they'll be facing consequences for it, which they won't.

[–] MostImportantElection@hexbear.net 36 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Maybe if this happened 10 or 20 years ago it would have led to Israel getting a slap on the wrist, maybe putting one or two soldiers on administrative leave for a bit. Now I don't think anyone cares, the genocide machine keeps humming along

I wasn't really paying attention to what Israel was doing 20 years ago because I was a teenager and we had World of Warcraft instead of TikTok but tbh in the time I have been paying attention I really don't think I've ever heard of any israeli facing consequences for anything ever. It's kinda been a constant stream of "we can do literally whatever we want and the u.s. will support it" and they keep proving that true by doing whatever they want, with the u.s. continuing to support it

I would be more inclined to side with the people who think israel is a smol bean vassal appendage and the epstein stuff indicating literally our entire government is subject to blackmail is just a massive Coincidence Theory but like I have literally not once to my recollection seen the supposed dog's leash get yanked. Shit, were there even any consequences when they sank that fucking ship? If anything the more it bites the hand that feeds it, the more the hand goes back to get savaged again

Yeah I'm sure the genocidal colonizers on the west bank who have the entire support of the usa/israel war machine are shaking in their boots.

Look out Israel!

Khanna is going to make a strongly worded speech in an empty House chamber. And then he's going to upload ~2m of highlights of the speech to Twitter where nobody will watch it to the end. And it'll get ~50 likes.

GIVE 👏 ISRAEL 👏 TWENTY 👏 PERCENT 👏 FEWER 👏 RIFLES!

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 17 points 4 days ago

20% fewer rifles for Pell Grant recipient settlers who operate a successful business in an underserved community.

I wonder if he'll learn anything from this experience. 🤔

[–] TheBroodian@hexbear.net 8 points 4 days ago

Probably the lesson learned will be to never speak the truth about Israel again

Just normal vassal behavior

US states do this all the time. Chud cops love arresting democrat lawmakers who are Just Asking Questions around ICE facilities and shit.

You love making this post-ironic ZOG "the tail sure isn't wagging the dog" comment on every post about Isn'treal, but you're not really making a useful observation any time you do. The Zionist project isn't a vassal state in the same way that EU nations are, they're a settler colonial project of the US and should be considered more like one of the hands of the US government in the same way that the Republic of Texas was.

[–] UmbraVivi@hexbear.net 15 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Yeah, it's an extension of the US. They're the same entity.

[–] hotcouchguy@hexbear.net 9 points 4 days ago

Yeah. Us relation to Israel is like Israel's relation to their own settlers. A bunch of maniacs who were nurtured and coddled for decades, because having them available as deniable shock troops and also sin-eaters was a valuable relationship.

But now both are so deep in their own propaganda that they've become a net negative to the overall project, an irrational element that needs to have discipline imposed. Except the situation has festered so long that it's become risky to do so, and we're ruled by cowards who can no longer maintain their own system, so they'll just put up with it until it becomes an acute crisis. Or maybe not, maybe this is still within the bounds of the kayfabe, but it feels like it's no longer contained like it used to be.

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 3 points 4 days ago

Exactly! Israel should be thought of as the 51st state, not a vassal state.

I love pointing out that it isn't a subservient master slave relationship, because it isn't, and I am extremely frustrated by people who look at the epstein stuff and refuse to acknowledge even a single implication of it complicating any potential master- slave vassal relationship, because it does. Thanks for implying im an antisemite for it i guess, even though israel isn't The Jews, it's a country with its own interests and intelligence agencies doing their own shit

Edit: i like you but i can't deal with this shit right now. "It's problematic to point out Israel has mossad and interests" hmmm yeah sure

[–] Blakey@hexbear.net 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

"It's problematic to point out Israel has mossad and interests"

But you didn't do that. Instead, you wrote "just normal vassal state behaviour", and like it or not, that phrasing suggests that you don't consider Israel a vassal state at all. That's typically, or at least very often, what people mean when they use that phrasing, AND it's common for chuds to try and sneak ZOG rhetoric into discussion so people are hyper aware of it. Just take the L, you accidentally said something that is easily read differently to what you intended. It's a text medium, this shit happens sometimes.

Or perhaps i've seen enough of these conversations to see how it always turns out with people who explicitly state that israel is just the u.s.'s dog/aircraft carrier/ etc and want to just leave it as "JUST NORMAL VASSAL BEHAVIOR" at whatever story/news bit that shows that's clearly not the case which pops up literally every 4-5 days

Fuck you

[–] Collatz_problem@hexbear.net 7 points 4 days ago (1 children)

It's not a master-slave relationship. Think of Israel as another agency of American government, Central Israel Agency, so to speak.

Wow sounds like i'm entirely right to point out how it isn't a normal vassal relationship then thanks for the support

[–] EmmaGoldman@hexbear.net 6 points 4 days ago (1 children)

You're not doing yourself any favors with your wording.

To provide an adjacent example, when white people are told that they have said something racist a common knee-jerk response is the thought-terminating statement, "I'm not racist!" Not sincerely holding racist or antisemitic beliefs doesn't preclude someone from saying something that's racist or antisemitic.

I don't think you're an anti-Semite, I'm asking you to dig a little deeper and keep cooking on your analysis because the statement you keep making is problematic particularly with the sort of blanket use you're giving it.

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

E: It's not problematic to point out Mossad or the structures Israel uses to reinforce/self-necessitate its existence. My gripe is purely with the wording of the original statement, "normal vassal behavior"

Okay, what's wrong with the wording there, because all I am doing is saying "this is not normal vassal behavior," which it isn't. I think of Ukraine or Saudi Arabia or any European state as being "a normal vassal." I think if some congress dipshit went to any of those places and got arrested for nothing it would be somewhat of an incident which would result in their release and at least an apology. In this case, he's arrested by a paramilitary and then when the actual military shows up, they side with them.

We both know that Israel intentionally and purposefully conflates its jewish population with The Jewish Identity to the point that they nearly 24/7 make accusations of antisemitism towards any criticism of israel so I really don't appreciate being implied to be an antisemite even as you acknowledge the basic premise of my argument (that Israel has and uses numerous methods to increase its influence over the U.S. government for self serving purposes, which should be entirely unnecessary if The Israeli Project is critical to the U.S.'s designs to begin with)

[–] Blakey@hexbear.net 5 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That's what you intended to say but people are clearly reading it as saying that Israel isn't a vassal state of the USA at all. It's the more obvious reading to me and clearly to a lot of other people as well. Just be less ambiguous in your wording and you won't get people up your ass about it, or at least if you do the majority of people are likely to have your back.

What the fuck has possibly been ambiguous about literally anything that i've said except for the initial "just normal vassal behavior" which Ive backed up at great length?

Seriously fuck you, "take the L" dawg L my fucking dick
