Meanwhile the portrait of U.S. military's first Black four-star general, Daniel "Chappie" James Jr., was taken down from the Air Force Art Gallery at the Pentagon. You know someone who actually deserves recognition. I guess his place in history was not settled.

From Wikipedia

A number of the citations on the medals awarded to the troopers at Wounded Knee state that they went in pursuit of Lakota who were trying to escape or hide. Another citation was for "conspicuous bravery in rounding up and bringing to the skirmish line a stampeded pack mule." Another medal was awarded in part for extending an enlistment. One citation was just "bravery".

It is very clear what message Hegsheth wants to send here, and it is not that catching a pack mule is "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty." The massacre at wounded knee is one of the darkest chapters of our history.

Hegseth isn't gonna like his place in history.

[–] Jax@sh.itjust.works 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Hegseth has likely lied every single day of his adult life, plus when he was learning how to lie as a kid/ teenager.

Hegseth's only regret will be that he didn't hurt enough of the 'right' people.

[–] Fishnoodle@lemmy.world 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

He's a fucking alcoholic, and you know he lies about that to even himself, so your probably right.

I want so badly to believe in religion because it would give me peace that monsters like him will get what they deserve. Stupid autistic brain won't let me without sufficient evidence.

[–] ceenote@lemmy.world 17 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's actually well documented that part of the appeal of religion is the psychological need for justice when it's so clearly absent in the real world. It's probably part of the reason Christianity spun off from Judaism when it became clear that the Jews weren't going to get any sort of justice or revenge for their oppression by the Roman Empire. Christianity has a greater emphasis on the afterlife and otherworldly justice than Judaism does. Prior to that, the Hebrews were doing fairly well with their own kingdoms and a focus on prosperity in life rather than waiting for the afterlife was working out pretty well.

Sorry for the tangent, I just think it's really interesting.

Secretary of War: "This decision is final (hic)"

That's not how republics work, you're not the "final decider".

[–] 4am@lemmy.zip 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Very telling that he thinks he is.

Can't revoke the medals if the body that issued them dissolves. Fuck it, I'll take it.

[–] Catoblepas@lemmy.blahaj.zone 36 points 1 month ago (1 children)

This decision is final. Their place in history is settled.

You are not a historian and also do not get to decide what happens in the future 💖

[–] Akasazh@lemmy.world 15 points 1 month ago

And he's lost every engagement he's been in, and history gets written by the victors.

[–] HrabiaVulpes@europe.pub 28 points 1 month ago (13 children)

Isn't opening fire on civilians like the most american thing ever? They open fire on protesting workers, on children in schools etc.

We can all agree it's immoral, but it's also just plain stupidity.

Even if you are white supremacist "kill all people of color", you still need a professional military that's not wasting time massacring civilians and creating PR disasters daily, if you hope to win any wars at all.

Also "their place in history is settled": sorry to ruin your day but that's not how collective processing of historical trauma works, nor history as a science.

[–] Karjalan@lemmy.world 8 points 4 weeks ago

I mean... Their place I history was already settled. They are war crime committing, baby killing, psychopaths who are the rare exception for "abolish the death penalty".

[–] gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world 21 points 1 month ago

This decision is final.

If it was that easy for him to do this it will be just as easy for the next Secretary of Defense to reverse it, but the fact that he feels the need to say this and must recognize on some level that a vast majority of people at this point hate their guts and can't wait to undo every last thing they've done is gratifying

[–] ProdigiousInsanity@lemmus.org 21 points 1 month ago

Well yeah, he is a Nazi so that tracks

[–] My_IFAKs___gone@lemmy.world 20 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I can't wait for this guy to be Karma's bitch.

[–] Asafum@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I wish karma was real but unfortunately we live in the world where pieces of shit just get away with everything.

[–] zebidiah@lemmy.ca 16 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

You get what you voted for America...

[–] FistingEnthusiast@lemmy.world 11 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

Yep

As individuals, there are plenty of good 'Muricans

But there are a huge number of utter cunts, and their society is absolutely abhorrent

[–] FudgyMcTubbs@lemmy.world 8 points 4 weeks ago (4 children)

Dude... I voted for Fetterman. I honestly don't know how to change anything now that I've been aggressively bait and switched by a Republican dick. I'm a naive fool.

Trust me, I've never gotten what I voted for once. The majority of Americans havent gotten what they voted for. Of those that voted 60% didnt vote for this. And the majority of the population continued the trend of not voting.

I dont know how to fix it. You would think in a country built on the idea of keeping your guns so you can fight the government, that we would see more physical pushback.

I just dont want to live on this planet anymore.

What a disappointment the human race turned out to be.

It has been every administration's decision since wounded knee, or they wouldn't have medals to take.

Upon managing to access the presidential bunker, the "march on D.C." group were unsurprised to find that the first lady and chief of war had taken their own lives, what they were surprised to discover was the commander and chief had chosen not to, but instead empty his entire clip into the already deceased secretary of war at close range.

So the satire from BioShock: Infinite has become reality.

[–] gAlienLifeform@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

Man, that game started out as such a good examination and denouncing of manifest destiny white supremacist bullshit with so many good little historical details, and then 3/4 of the way through the story

.some idiot on the writing team was like "Ooh, the black people resisting fascist bullshit seem uncomplicatedly good, we better have their leader murder an innocent child for no reason so the white main character can wisely say there are problems on both sides"

which was just some real cowardly bullshit

[–] ShinkanTrain@lemmy.ml 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Bioshock 1: Let's explore and denounce this bullshit set of ideas

Bioshock 2: Actually, both sides.

Bioshock Infinite: Let's explore and deno- just kidding it's both sides again

Quite the "warrior" ethos, this Hegseth has. I want him to try this in person and see how well it holds up when someone fights back.

[–] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 11 points 1 month ago (3 children)

I mean yeah, they're fucking Nazis. If there weren't cameras and the internet they'd be putting people into gas chambers.

[–] jtrek@startrek.website 11 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I mean, I would not be surprised if we learned they had already started mass murdering the people ICE abducts.

This decision is final. Their place in history is settled.

I find those last 2 sentences amusing and puzzling. It is like he thinks he is the decider of what society at large is going to care about at any given moment. That level of ego must hurt your neck to carry around everyday.

The comment about a Nazi regime is accurate-Hitler argued no one would care about the holocaust because no one cared about what the US did to native Americans.

[–] Washi@lemmy.world 8 points 1 month ago (2 children)

These Nazis have no idea just how despicable and evil they truly are. They are under the illusion they are the good guys.

[–] ArmchairAce1944@discuss.online 9 points 1 month ago

They do not think they are the good guys, they genuinely relesh in their evil. They want to be grand moff Tarkin blowing up Alderean. They want to be Darth Vader force choking anyone that bothers them.

My personal opinion is that no war medal is a good thing so this is nothing more than an opportunity for this man to reinforce his imperialism.

What other ways are people interpreting this?
