I was the last of my friends to get married, at 37.

Without exception, all of them are now divorced and in financial distress because of it. I'm coming up on 25 years.

I wouldn’t be so quick to judge. There’s truth to that, but life is about doing not about potential. Anything worth having requires work and comes at risk.

I can’t fault someone for taking a chance at what they saw as a very real possibility of being happy.

Also I think people forget that even though a relationship ended, it (presumably) still brought happiness while it lasted.

You shouldn’t avoid doing good things just because they might end someday.

Except studies show divorced people are still unhappy. and in the last decade, less are getting divorced because they can't afford it.

All I see online anymore seems to be bitter takes. Yours is a refreshing view and I'm finding myself wishing I could find a lot more of it.

Yep! That's totally why I'm still single at 40! Yep.

See I'm not the problem, I'm actually smart! Totally not an undesirable worthless pile of human garbage! Nope nope nope!

Hey, you're a worthless pile of human garbage and that's ok. I guarantee that there's another pile of human trash out there that perfectly matches you in every way. One day you'll find each other. I'm rooting for you.

We've all been sold on what life is "supposed" to look like. Go to school, get married, start a career, have kids... not enough people question if that's really what they want. Life can be whatever you want it to be. Those things aren't required, and if that's not the life you actually want, then all those things will do is tie you down.

My brother is in his 40's. No children, never married. Just bought a house.

I have to assume he saw all the trouble I got into chasing women, and made better choices.

But I'm happy with my wife, so I dunno.

I've dated and known a few man who more or less fit that description. They were mostly pretty lonely, even if they're happy with their direction overall. I'm not saying that you have to get married or to have children in order to not be lonely, so much as that people tend to keep their loneliness hidden.

What he mostly reminds me of is a movement or group or whatever that got warped into incel stupidity: Men Going Their Own Way or MGTOW. He doesn't have a gram of hate for anyone. He's just fine on his own.

Any life that measures its self in dollars was a waste.

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago (2 children)

I don't know if he is measuing his life in dollars. He doesn't seem to really do much.

I'd say a life spent in front of a gaming computer is a waste, which would apply to him sadly. I may not have always made the smart choice but I can definitely say I'm happy now.

[–] YoureHotCupCake@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

Why is spending time doing a hobby a waste to you?

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 2 points 18 hours ago

Its a waste if that is all you ever do.

[–] django@discuss.tchncs.de 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'd like one house please.

[–] CADmonkey@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

My apolgies. I design the houses, I don't sell them.

... and remember, at 30 years old, you may well be only 1/3rd of the way through your life
