Detective Pikachu was fine

[–] RNAi@hexbear.net 21 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Have one fucking original idea I beg you

[–] invalidusernamelol@hexbear.net 9 points 20 hours ago

The worst is when there is an original idea in there, but the only way to sell it was to wrap it in an existing IP which both cheapens the original idea and the IP.

I haven't thought about Detective Pikachu since it came out, I never saw it and people stopped talking about it pretty much the instant it was no longer in theatres. Same with the Mario movie, and the Sonic movie. I'm starting to think all these films aimed at childhood nostalgia are completely empty and meaningless and have 0 actual impact on people because they are the safest, blandest, least interesting thing they can be, made to a cookie cutter formula for maximum profit.

The only thing people remember about the Sonic movie is the original Sonic design and only because at least that was an interesting thing to talk about. I'm not even sure if they'll survive time as childhood memories for gen alpha - like, they have so much stuff competing for their childhood nostalgia, are they gonna remember the mario movies the way that millenials remember the star wars prequels?

and to think the original version of the character is literally an ecoterrorist joyce-messier

I heard Eggman put on a good performance. Aside from the hilarious original sonic design that's all I've ever heard about the movie.

It was surprisingly good, all things concerned, even with the lore retcons. Well as good as any Van Wilder movie can be.

live action Magic School Bus film

uh-oh, bad news for the film Adam McKay is making my friend write for him lmao.

spoiler for an unwritten movie and details i probably shouldn't revealfrom what he's described to me, the concept was that billionaires have started to utilise basically magic school bus / honey I shrunk the kids-esque technology as a health treatment and physically send in workers as health professionals to treat and clean up health issues (like physically remove plaque from the aorta or fix a liver or some shit), but the big reveal being that they entirely exploit and dispose of the working class by sending them in and then tell them that there's literally no exit plan and they are expected to die inside the billionaire's body. The plot is then about the crew staging a mutiny/revolution and working out how reverse the shrinking, kill the billionaire from the inside of their body and somehow survive.

I bring this up because when i first heard about this, I gave the project the working title "The Magic School Bussy"

Innerspace meets Mutiny on the Bounty

[–] Johnny_Arson@hexbear.net 5 points 16 hours ago

lol I was gonna say they already made this movie, but an anti-capitalist take on the concept would be awesome.

[–] miz@hexbear.net 6 points 19 hours ago

I'd watch that

[–] Impenetrouble@hexbear.net 3 points 17 hours ago

I'd watch the live action Magic School Bus, AND this back to back.

A blonde cishet woman playing a canonically queer redhead? ...Pass.

[–] deforestgump@hexbear.net 2 points 23 hours ago (2 children)

Neither was Lily Tomlin, though she is the spirit of most people's conception of the Ms. Frizzle character. This just feels like "lets just get a hot blonde lady to do it".

[–] EmmaGoldman@hexbear.net 4 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

You're kidding, right? Lily Tomlin has been with her now-wife since 1971.

[–] deforestgump@hexbear.net 3 points 19 hours ago

I meant more the redhead thing. But no I wasn't aware she was with her wife since 1971.

[–] culpritus@hexbear.net 4 points 21 hours ago

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jane_Wagner

She is Lily Tomlin's comedy writer, collaborator, and wife.
