I was gonna word it as “flip off” but I think that might’ve been confusing.

My answer would generally be a few times a week for various reasons.

I worked in steel shops and we would always walk by each other and be like "hey mike"and already have the middle finger up. Drop something? Flip it off. Welder stops mid weld because someone flipped your breaker? Flip off the welder and the guy. etc. All day every day. I miss those fuckers.

Every time I have to do something in a Microsoft admin interface at work. Worst software on the planet, fuck SharePoint, fuck Teams, burn it all to the ground.

[–] l3enc@piefed.ee 18 points 1 week ago (1 children)

... never?? is this something people do, first time i'm hearing of it

[–] k0e3@lemmy.ca 2 points 6 days ago

I don't think I've flipped the bird since grade school. It feels really juvenile and awkward for me. I do swear a lot though.

[–] Lemming421@lemmy.world 18 points 1 week ago

I have to use Windows 11, New Outlook and Excel for work, so… frequently.

[–] mcSlibinas@lemmy.world 14 points 1 week ago

On phone i have adblock. Middle finger to ATM every time i see ad there. ATM have camera, which is adds value to middle finger.

Flipped off my Mac two days ago and texted it to a friend who shares my annoyance with forced updates

[–] dogdeanafternoon@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Mac doesn’t do forced updates. You definitely accepted to pop-up to update.

[–] nikosey@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah I think there was a pop the day before to update now, tonight, to remind me later, or to skip. Just kidding, no skip.

[–] dogdeanafternoon@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 week ago

Yup exactly. If you pick the right option, you’ll never have to wait for an update again.

[–] Zomg@piefed.world 9 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Never. I can control my emotions against an inanimate object.

???

[–] CluckN@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

In IT it’s a requirement to flip off machinery that refuses to work. It’s therapeutic and only offends clankers.

[–] Zomg@piefed.world 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

It's not. Source: sys admin lol

[–] CluckN@lemmy.world 2 points 6 days ago (2 children)

More like Cis admin you poser

[–] Lifecoach5000@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

I laughed. Yeah I’ll be a poser too.

[–] Zomg@piefed.world 1 points 6 days ago

That's a joke I'd expect a user to make.

[–] Weirdfish@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago (3 children)

When YouTube flips to a loud ad and I'm too slow to the mute button, I for sure tell the TV to fuck off and give it the finger.

For sure a few times a week.

[–] rumschlumpel@feddit.org 8 points 1 week ago

lol, watching ads

[–] squirrel@cake.kobel.fyi 4 points 1 week ago

Install SmartTube if your TV / streaming device supports it. It comes with adblock and sponsorblock.

[–] Lifecoach5000@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

lol this is almost my exact reason for posting this…

[–] Libb@piefed.social 7 points 1 week ago

Never. Why would I do that? It's an object, and I would not even do that toward a person.

The day we realized there were too many ads on TV... we (my spouse and I) decided it was not a good deal we were offered (paying for a tv and then being forced to watch always more ads) so we got rid of the tv (not breaking it, or anything: we gave it away) and since then we never watched TV again, that was some 26 years ago.

The day I realized I could not trust my (smart)phone to respect my privacy... I stopped using it for anything personal. No social, no games, not even music or ebooks are stored on it: only what I'm required to use for security and finance purpose because I have no alternative. Heck, I barely use it as a phone ;) And certainly not to watch YT: I watch it on my computer using uBO on a Firefox fork (Waterfox), so I never have to watch an ad. I used to be a paid subscriber to YT, but I decided to stop paying the day they became serious about hunting down on ad-blockers... and I started using one myself ;)

[–] adarza@piefed.ca 6 points 1 week ago

hardly any 'salutes' to the screen, but definitely some uh... 'verbal exchange' happening. usually several times a day, and you wouldn't want children nearby if i'm really on roll because windows fucked something up big time. aaaaand, occasionally to and at myself because every now-and-then it truly is my fault.

Every day. CAD software is frustrating even on the best of days.

[–] ScientifficDoggo@lemmy.zip 5 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Windows update at work? That's a one finger salute! Phone notification that's not the spouse? Finger! All my packages are up to date and I can't get my -Syu dopamine hit? Double fingers!

....so probably at least once a day?

[–] thurstylark@lemmy.today 2 points 1 week ago

I run my own repo for my AUR packages, with the help of aurutils, on a VM, which also needs updates. That way I get to run updates for my server before building packages before running even more updates on my clients. Makes the update O exponentially better 🤤

[–] Smoogs@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

depends on how much politics i watch that day

[–] Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 1 week ago

I work in IT...i would be a millionair for every time i did it in the last 5 years. Because somehow its always the same. I finish something and it works. Then come back the next day and it suddenly no longer works!

[–] hanrahan@slrpnk.net 4 points 1 week ago

zero times.

[–] MuttMutt@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Usually never... I did a tablet last night.

Been doing a network change, have setup multiple vLAN's and WiFi SSID's that connect to specific vLAN's. This tablet is still connected to the same AP and SSID but kept saying it couldn't authenticate. It was powered down during the switch and rebooted a couple times. Put in the password again and still couldn't authenticate... after 3 tries finally got pissed, gave the tablet the finger, and walked away.

It was connected and working fine this morning, go figure.

Will probably be pissed at it again when I make a bunch of firewall rule changes today.

[–] gajahmada@awful.systems 3 points 1 week ago

I used to work front-line CS for e-commerce owned by Alibaba in my country.

So several times a day. Never felt rage like those ever since. I last 2 months.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 2 points 1 week ago

Depends on how frustrated I am with the game I'm playing at the time or how hard I beat the fuck out of an annoying enemy.

[–] HubertManne@piefed.social 2 points 1 week ago

never. Im not much of a middle finger guy.

[–] baggachipz@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

I usually just mutter “fuckin’ piece of shit” but sometimes I yell that.

[–] Ekpu@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago

I proposed a long time ago a mandatory "fuck you" button for all software...

[–] postmateDumbass@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

The sky gets the double middle finger salute 3-4 times a week.

[–] DarrinBrunner@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Rarely, and never to the machine itself, but some asshole who shows up.

I don't get mad at machines. That's like getting mad at a fork for not being a spoon.

I middle finger many objects (and a few people) throughout the day.

[–] JohnnyEnzyme@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago

I usually just throw my phone against the wall when it's called for. The message is a lot clearer that way.

At least every week

[–] undefined@lemmy.hogru.ch -1 points 1 week ago

Is this common to do? Do you just have no control over the content you’re consuming? I feel like I’m missing something here.
