how was jurij gagarin from ohio

[–] Findus_Falke@feddit.org 4 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

My thought exactly. I checked: John Glenn was the first US-American to orbit the Earth (3 times), only after Yuri Gagarin completed just over one full orbit and Gherman Titov even 17 times, in the year before Glenns flight.

based on Wikipedia alone, it seems like the federal subject he was born in do kinda got Ohio vibes
• cold, rainy, fucking humid
• not very populous
• fairly industrial

apparently Isaac Asimov was also born there

Haha. Should have said American if they meant John Glenn.

It should be noted that those 7 presidents average out to less than 4 years. More of a quantity vs quality sort of state when it comes to leading the nation.

I mean they were from Ohio but all of the actual meaningful flight stuff happened in NC. Further supports the hypothesis but not in the implied sense.

They built and designed the wright flyer at their shop in Dayton, they just decided to test it in NC. It's kinda like saying NASA was from Houston but all the space stuff actually happened in Florida

The 1903 Flyer was such a shitty airplane that it needed negative density altitude to fly. They flew at Kill Devil Hills, inches above sea level, on a cold December day. They tried to replicate the flight in 2003 on the 100th anniversary, it was warmer, and the plane failed to fly.

I thought all the space stuff happened up there, in space?

Some men are born great

Some men achieve greatness

And some are from Ohio

(1840 presidential campaign slogan)

When are you guys gonna come up with new Ohio jokes, these ones were old two decades ago

[–] j5y7@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Did you know the toothbrush was invented in Ohio? That's why it's not called a "teethbrush".

[–] zalgotext@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

That's just a repurposed West Virginia/Kentucky joke

[–] j5y7@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 days ago

They don't need a brush.
