The same reason that, a few years ago, "Keynesian Economics" was a conservative scare-word when it came to any public spending except war. Think of all the war jobs.

People say that the Space Race was about "beating the commies", but conspicuously, rockets are also useful for military ventures. If it were only about proving how great capitalism is, we would have a Rail Race.

I think this is a good argument but to make it more palatable to porky you gotta invert it and pitch Saudi Arabia as the blueprint (though I guess there's nothing fundamentally different between Elon's hyperloop and the typical Saudi projects that never materialize)

But that wasn't public money. It was CIA's own private money, that they righteously earned defending democracy by selling crack in poor neighborhoods.
