How come "We have to do it because China does it/Is going to do it" only applies to throwing public money at scams or the weapons industry, and never investing in infrastructure (hexbear.net)

People say that the Space Race was about "beating the commies", but conspicuously, rockets are also useful for military ventures. If it were only about proving how great capitalism is, we would have a Rail Race.
