Watching people get so, so damn upset about the trailers has been interesting. Really pushes this idea that Orwell's works aren't examined or assessed in classrooms, they're forced upon children like religious dogma. People have been acting like a religious icon is being desecrated and something "very important" is being destroyed by this.

Which is very funny that the same cold hand of capital that enshittifies everything is also the same hand of capital that actively indoctrinated millions (if not billions) of children using Orwell's slop and yet can't even keep their own sacred idols from being enshittified for cheap profits.

Someone posted a slop thread on here that had someone whining about the movie being “anticapitalist”. It’ll be a really fucking funny twist if it’s not anticommunist enough for the chuds.

[–] glimmer_twin@hexbear.net 16 points 1 month ago

Tbf it could be the most on-the-nose attempt at portraying Orwell’s anticommunist vision, and zero media literacy chud idiots like shapeepee and critical drinker will whine about it being woke because the animators didn’t make Mollie look fuckable enough

"This is Orwellian!" will soon conjure up a mental image of a pig flossing

Nothing would make me happier if that's what the new generation associates with Orwell from now on

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 16 points 1 month ago

I know I'm responding with ridiculous gifs to anyone invoking Orwell

[–] Dort_Owl@hexbear.net 20 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I thought you meant Joe Rogan for a second and got excited about how terrible that would be

[–] miz@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

the title has Seth Rogen's name misspelled

It's clearly going to do an edgy 'cutesy turned scary' lure you into false sense of security heel-turn that is meant to shock viewers. And reviewers are going to gush over how shocking and startling it is, and how artful it is, and how it's so contemporary and modernised with its subversion of quaint Trolls The Movie graphics to make it relevant for modern audiences in these Uncertain Times™ it'll go down a treat

I just don’t think it’s possible for any adaptation where the bumbling guffawing seth rogan plays napoleon is gonna be able to be received as anything but complete trash lol

[–] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 6 points 1 month ago

Yeah could go that way. In any case I hope it eats shit at the box office

Also it apparently has Laverne Cox in it which is odd considering she's trans and the studio behind it is Christian/Mormon but they also have her playing character that they gender swapped from the original material very weird all over

[–] MarxusMaximus@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago

The Christian company is just the distributor, not the production company. When it entered production, it was supposed to be distributed by Netflix but they pulled out and the Christian company, Angel Studios, bought the distribution rights. At that point they probably bought the distribution rights of the product as-is and couldn't affect story or casting. It does make sense to me that a "values-based" Christian distributor from Utah would want to release anticommunist slop, though.

I’m not terribly surprised unfortunately. I may be misremembering but I believe she basically said she likes dating transphobes

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 14 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Said it before but I think their next adaption should be the Turner Diaries. Just keep making anti communist polemic embarassing.

[–] JustSo@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

.... look its an unexploited original IP and I think the American people have healed enough to-

I can't keep the bit up, but it seems dangerously plausible. Are you sure you're certified to use the lathe?

[–] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

Certified to use the Forlkift of Heaven

[–] mathemachristian@hexbear.net 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nah through a complete coincidence they're putting it out on laborday

[–] Lussy@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

Not even hiding it anymore

What's the context on George Orwell snitching? I recently read 1984 not knowing much about it so I read a little about Orwell after but dont know much about him

Edit: Thank you for the answers, here's some info for anyone else who didnt know anything about this :) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orwell%27s_list?wprov=sfla1 sounds like he either revealed what a crap person he was at the end of his life, lost his marbles as he was dying of tuberculosis, or both. But it seems unlikely the bigotry and willingness to help the state would come out of nowhere. I think further reading would be needed for me to have a more informed perspective but I appreciate being filled in so I at least know what happened

[–] starkillerfish@hexbear.net 17 points 1 month ago

he reported on socialists and co to the MI5

[–] Keld@hexbear.net 17 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (1 children)

He was asked about who to hire to write anticommunist propaganda and he came back with a set of weird reviews of various left wingers in british society.

He wrote a blatantly racist, homophobic, classist and just thoroughly disgusting list of every public socialist he could think of that he wasnt asked for for no fucking reason and handed it to the government.
Its up to you if that qualifies as snitching, but it certainly is vile.

[–] Cris_Citrus@piefed.zip 4 points 1 month ago

Thank you for the additional context! I was able to find the Wikipedia page on the subject which was a useful primer

This was a good read, thanks for sharing.

I recently read Homage to Catalonia and found myself admiring his actions, but clearly he has some serious wrongs to account for when you look at a fuller picture. I remember in my Florida teenage years both Animal Farm and 1984 were explicitly taught to prove to us the dangers of Communism in what was supposedly an English class. (And on reflection, 'English' was a more accurate label than 'Literature'.)

The life sandwich of Colonial stooge, brief interlude fighting the fascists, to anti-Communist state tool is hard to swallow. I'll make a note and just reserve my historical admiration for the good fight and seek out some other authors less tainted by all the baggage.
