There are indeed many boomers with clean consciences.

IMO there are two kinds of people:

People who have made a racist joke

and people who weren't joking.

Not gonna lie and say that I've never made a racist joke, but these days not anymore. Too many right wingers who think you're serious.

[–] hayvan@piefed.world 22 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Protip, if you have an offensive joke, it's best to make it private. Any sexist/racist jokes I have ever made were all in the company of the people who know me well enough to understand I'm making fun of existing stereotypes or actual assholes.

Know your audience

This is gonna be controversial but to give this another perspective..

A long time ago me and my buddy role-played racist police in gta (not against other real people though) we are generally into really dark humor, the more evil and horrible the joke the bigger the contrast with how we actually are on the inside and we laugh at the absurdity of that which makes the experience funny while the joke itself never is.

But context is everything, we are about as anti racist as it gets irl, roleplaying the absurdity of racist police it is a way to process that this fucked up reason this happens in our reality.

It affirms what we already know, racist behaviour is not just wrong but also incredibly stupid and there is no reasonable explanation on why a person would be like that besides some irrational and dangerous mental illness.

This is what most right wingers don't seem to understand. Know your audience. If I make a shocking or offensive joke I know exactly who's going to hear it, and I'm pretty sure how they will react.

[–] NannerBanner@literature.cafe 2 points 2 days ago

Oh, they understand. They want to sit behind the safe wall of societal expectations that you won't beat their face in, and make the jokes because they want to spread their hate and for you to be shocked, not for you to laugh at something stupid and absurd. That's the real difference. If I tell a joke that touches on something like race or religion, it's because the absurdity of it is funny. When they tell them, they believe the joke and the 'reality' of it is why it's funny.

I'm married to a coloured woman who makes racist jokes. Life is confusing lol

[–] diffaldo@lemmy.dbzer0.com 13 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Its just a joke dude, dont be snowflake!

[–] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Narrator - "The joke was screaming racial slurs loudly."

[–] SoloCritical@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

6 racist jokes later

“I’m not racist… BUT.”

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago

or "im not racist, i married an asian wife."

[–] Jalfred_prurock@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago

There's a really funny famous comedian out there. You wouldn't like his jokes. His name is Chris Rock.

[–] Jalfred_prurock@lemmy.today 2 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Suggest trying not to worry about what race you think people are in the first place. Isn't that the root of racism?

[–] Jax@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

I don't think you can point to any one root cause of racism.

[–] PeriodicallyPedantic@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That's great in a world where we had racial equality or equity.

We need to see colour in order to see racism.

[–] RickyRigatoni@piefed.zip 1 points 2 days ago

What about a racist guy who makes white jokes

[–] shawn1122@sh.itjust.works -1 points 1 day ago

Always good to have standards.

[–] Jalfred_prurock@lemmy.today 0 points 2 days ago (2 children)

A lot of people you know, kind and good people, voted for Trump. Do what that truth whatever you will.

[–] lagoon8622@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I have a problem with some of your priors.

[–] Jalfred_prurock@lemmy.today 0 points 1 day ago (1 children)
[–] forestbeasts@pawb.social 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I think they probably mean that voting for Trump precludes people from being good and kind?

[–] Jalfred_prurock@lemmy.today 0 points 1 day ago

Overly simplistic. Just not true.

[–] IkeKim@lemmy.zip 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

The OP was about white guys making racist jokes and you immediately talk up Trump. Hit dog, will holler.

[–] Jalfred_prurock@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago

Was I "talking up Trump," or was I pointing out an obvious truth that is uncomfortable for some people. Does it even matter? It really doesn't.
