Lemmy, the structure of reddit style threads is incredibly useful, we need to build a shared wealth here. I am less interested in other forms of the fediverse until we nail this down but that is me.
Casual Conversation
Share a story, ask a question, or start a conversation about (almost) anything you desire. Maybe you'll make some friends in the process.
RULES
- Be respectful: no harassment, hate speech, bigotry, and/or trolling.
- Encourage conversation in your OP. This means including heavily implicative subject matter when you can and also engaging in your thread when possible.
- Avoid controversial topics (e.g. politics or societal debates).
- Stay calm: Don’t post angry or to vent or complain. We are a place where everyone can forget about their everyday or not so everyday worries for a moment. Venting, complaining, or posting from a place of anger or resentment doesn't fit the atmosphere we try to foster at all. Feel free to post those on !goodoffmychest@lemmy.world
- Keep it clean and SFW
- No solicitation such as ads, promotional content, spam, surveys etc.

Thank you for your contributions here!
Lemmy is too full of unkind people, actually ruthless.
Doesn't seem to have anything to do with the comment you replied to.
7.9k posts, nice work! Got me beat
Hey, I see the effort you put in to give this place life, it is huge!
We are both great it is true haha
BookWyrm, PieFed, WAFRN, Loops, Pixelfed, and NeoDB are the main socials where I actually post stuff/interact with people/etc, if that's what counts as hanging out?
On more of a small community level with casual conversations and such, it'd be mostly Signal, Fluxer, and Matrix.
Would you expand on those and why you like them? :)
Sure! I like reviewing the media I consume, so that's what my BookWyrm and NeoDB accounts are for. Also tracking stuff I haven't gotten to yet, etc. BookWyrm for books, NeoDB for literally everything else lol. I know I could just do that with a notes app or something, but I enjoy getting comments on my reviews/lists/etc and commenting on others. And finding new stuff I wouldn't have heard of fron other people.
WAFRN is my main shortform platform, mostly I use it for shitposting and shouting into the void, but It's also where I follow the accounts of all the people and projects I like to keep updated on. So I can fangirl at the creative team behind this or that audiodrama whenever a new episode comes out, for example. If I wanna shout into the void except even longer, I write long blog posts on WriteFreely instead. Those will usually be some craft or food project.
People here will already totally get PieFed I'm sure. I generally use it for forums dedicated to super niche topics, like Shavian English or breadmaking or w/e.
On Loops, I'm mostly posting short video memes. Someday I'd like to post educational/informational stuff too, but that's a lot of work...
I use PixelFed for literally everrrryyyyy type of posting that involves pictures. Memes, my garden, dishes I've made, stuff patrins make in my makerspace, etc. There's no rhyme or rhythm there. I've just naively assumed that, being specifically for pictures, it must be optimized to host them better than the other platforms? I'll even post to Lemmy communities from there instead, if pictures are involved.
My feed keeps disappearing there. I get a message saying ghosts have took over…and all my saves # are gone.
Which one?
Pixelfed
Loops itself is a website, or its something like piefed and Mastodon ???🤔🤔🤔
If PieFed is reddit and Mastodon is Twitter, then Loops is TikTok. Short form looping videos, except they federate so people on the other platforms can see them too
Any Pixelfed accounts you can recommend?
Well I'm not sure if I can really recommend the one I'm on. It's randomly gone down for lengthy periods more than once, the admins seem difficult to track down, and it's frequently out of date. Probably I should have migrated away, but I'm attached now 😝
If I were just starting out, I'd probably join this one:
https://anar.chi.st/
EDIT: oop I misread that as "instances" lol, sorry! I definitely follow lots of cool accounts, like @amazonrestore@gram.social
Nice rec! I'm Brazilian and vegan, so that's right up my alley
Hello from 🇮🇳. I really need time to turn into a full vegan, and finally evolve into a fruitarian.
How does fluxer work ??🤔🤔🤔
It's very nearly a Discord clone, which makes sense gicen the creator had contributed code to Discord in the past. The main instance is overpopulated though, it runs terribly compared to the self-hosted ones. That said, I'd go Matrix over Fluxer if my friends would let me. It's not federated or even E2EE.
Piefed for my post-reddit stuff. I prefer the longer forum-like experience here for a lot of things.
BlueSky for other stuff. All the rabbit people there are great and I can’t live without cute bunny pictures. I usually stick to specific feeds and ignore most of the rest.
That's what I like too, it feels like the old days of message boards where you really were a community. You get to know people here
Agreed! You are one of the folks I see pop up often 💚
I like the smaller spaces. I feel like there are way better discussions here. I do wish there was a bigger bunny space though.
PieFed, Mastodon and Matrix.
Hello, mind if I ask, what do you do on Matrix? Just joined some group chats or do you actually know people there? I hear is like discord but know nobody there or how to join, curious.
I just use it for discussing fediverse development with other fediverse developers and instance admins. If it wasn't for that I probably wouldn't use it.
Doesn't discord want your mobile number ??🤔🤔🤔
Lemmy and YouTube
Mostly Lemmy and Bluesky and occasionally Tildes and Mastodon.
Been meaning to check out PieFed and Loops.
Piefed and Zulip. i don't comment a lot on Piefed, i mainly post. Jlai.lu is more active on Zulip, around 100 messages per day.
Lemmy...PieFed
I mean...they're kinda the same thing from the standpoint of the community. Different intercompatible software packages.
Lemmy, but also Z2 and GameFAQs
Could you expand on the latter two and what you gain from them :)
My Signal group chats have basically become what facebook used to be. People I actually care about sharing memes and information and life updates.
Piefed/lemmy have scratched my reddit itch.
If piefed be kinda slow I'll skim mastodon a bit. Inspirational skeletor helps me make it through the day.
knockout.chat is a nice old-style forum, if you prefer that kind of UI/UX. It's not a PHPBB throwback, it has some modern considerations, but it's still a forum. Has some rules that prevent it turning into a cesspit, unlike many other popular forums I could list. Very inclusive and friendly!
Piefed, Mastodon and IRC.
Also trying to get into small web and neocities things and stuff.
Lemmy/PieFed. That's it.
A few days ago I tried to use 4chan; around 2008~10 I used it semi-frequently. Well. Not even the least worst boards are worth the trouble nowadays, that place has become a zombie eating its own brain.
Reddit? No. I flat out refuse to use that cesspool. I don't use it even to look for info, screw it.
Beyond that I've been hanging out offline. Sometimes with friends, sometimes family.
Mostly Lemmy, but Reddit still has the good local/niche content, so I'm there too.
Local forums Greek speaking, Lemmy, Mastodon, letterboxd for movies, but also hobbies forum like sat-universe and linuxsat-support.
ebaum's world
Discord on Mondays and Wednesdays (a few friends and I have set aside those days for playing together), and Lemmy most other days.
I just switched over to piefed! When reddit announced their API restrictions a few years ago, I migrated to lemmy.word. It was okay, I noticed that I related more to content from other instances. I changed jobs and my new job blocked lemmy.word, so I decided it was time to migrate again.
But typically I am somewhere between this space, bluesky (for sports), some sort of programming forum, or watching youtube videogame content
Lobsters...???
I'll eat those fuckers.
Post reddit, most of my internet time is youtube. I barely used youtube until like '22. I like watching longform videos about various topics from actual professionals and experts, not lame layman commentary from wannabe influencers that seems to make up the bulk of popular crap on there. That and the occasional old school forum for some of my hobbies that are still active, though the userbase there is usually people in their 60s.
That's pretty much it. I don't do discord or any of that stuff. It's weird and boring to me because so much of the chats are just inane small talk.
I still miss the communities on reddit I used to be involved with 5-10 years ago, but they all died, or some weird mod took over and banned anyone who was remotely authentic because they wanted the sub to be disneyfied. It was really great to be part of a near-peer group of people my own age and swap stories and crack jokes. I feel like the modern internet is so absurdly serious and money-focused.
Even IRL all my old social spaces are long gone, and/or the population shifted from people who were chill to people who are obsessed with their brand image, who are a huge drag to interact with. It's been so long since I met anyone new who was just doing their thing and enjoying life, and not obsessively trying to broadcast an image of themselves or sell you something.
I guess that's why I like youtube now, the videos I watch are mostly people just doing their thing, rather than trying to promote themselves or sell products. Most of the channels I watch are pretty small and probably won't ever grow as they are too academic for a broader audience.
I feel the same. What kind of channels do you watch?
If I'm not on Lemmy or YouTube I'm probably watching porn. I don't use the internet much for anything else.
What kind of porn
I've created my account on multiverse.soulism.net and am testing out federated websites. I've also created accounts on hear-me.social and gr8.pics But l'm working more on my piefed account, as this is giving me the sandbox platform to experiment away from mainstream social media.
