Using AI to give me directions on how to do something I don't know how to do. The instructions will start failing about step 3.

"Don't go to bed angry"

Look asshole, 90% of fights are because we're both tired, odds are we'll wake up in the morning ready to reconnect.

I hate when people do this.

[–] Forester@pawb.social 12 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I hate when people rub their entire nasty greasy hand all along the inside of the shared chip bag.

[–] Ardyssian@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 day ago

You guys share?

[–] capuccino@lemmy.world 9 points 1 day ago (2 children)

What do you mean? Don't you grab the shared chip bag, take a bunch of chips and then pass the bag to the right?

[–] Dojan@pawb.social 9 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Always pour it into a bowl, then eat the crisps using chopsticks. Though that latter part is because I don’t like getting stuff on my hands.

[–] blackbrook@mander.xyz 2 points 1 day ago

No you hold the bag over your face and shake a few into your mouth so you don't have to touch them with your hands.

[–] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 4 points 1 day ago

I just pour out what I want on a napkin or plate, and eat those.

Never before have I felt so personally attacked.

😄 ok, I can respect that

[–] Melobol@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Ohh they are folding it in fron the top also? Why not just do it from the bottom and cut the top off? Without touching any of the content?

[–] capuccino@lemmy.world 8 points 1 day ago

It go beyond that. When some person starts to do that it's like "look this fucking cool idea I saw on this thing that kids call the internet". At the end you have to undo the trick because you can't grab the last chips that are stuck in the multiple pocket universes that are created, that, and the fact that a lot of chips got break in the process.

I don't usually take scissors to the bar with me

Most of my life is hack. People call them 'optimisers' these days. I can't do anything without thinking about how I could do it faster, cheaper, better. I suppose one of my biggest blunders was using heroin in place of ADHD medication. It works great for ADHD but the side effects are a total nightmare.

Following foodtubers hack of the month. Wasted so much food on their lies. The most expensive mistake was packing steak in salt overnight. Another was “fast” brisket. I’m not talking about “don’t try this at home” cooks, I’m talking about “this is so amazing you have to try it”.

[–] dmention7@midwest.social 6 points 1 day ago

I have messed up steaks by salting them too much. But if you pat them dry the day before, sprinkle generously with kosher salt, and them leave in the fridge on a wire rack for up to 24h, it removes some of the surface moisture and helps you get a nice crust.

Packing in salt would definitely ruin them 😩

[–] slazer2au@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

Ordinary Sausage shouldn't be followed either way.

[–] Alizarin@hexbear.net 4 points 1 day ago (1 children)

What happened to the steak

[–] TheAsianDonKnots@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 day ago

I just turned a perfectly good ribeye into a salt lick. I always air cure my my steaks in the fridge for 24 hours but that’s just a light layer of salt. This thing looked like a baked Alaska coming off the grill. It was awful.

[–] Good4Nuthin@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Overnight? That must have been salty af. I salt, rinse, dry mine, but only for roughly 10min per 1/2” of thickness, adjusted to taste.

[–] weeeeum@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

I do a dry brine, making sure to measure out the salt to around 1% steaks weight so you DONT over salt it. It's like packing it with salt, just a reasonable amount

[–] TheReanuKeeves@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Isn't dry brining usually multiple days?

I salt mine overnight and pat them off before I sear them.

Once my avocados weren’t ripe enough for a recipe I wanted to make on the day I was having guests over. I searched for tips to ripen or soften them more quickly. One of these tips was to wrap them in foil and bake them in the oven (the tip specifically said it would help with the texture and not the taste). Well, it took way longer than the tip said it would for the avocados to soften and they tasted like hot shit. It would have been better to just save them for another day.

[–] TheSlad@sh.itjust.works 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I once tried every avocado ripening trick i could find in a desperate attempt to enjoy some avocado toast. Let me tell you they are all bullshit. Just eat it tomorrow instead.

[–] dmention7@midwest.social 12 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The best way to get an avocado to ripen immediately is to plan to eat it in 3 days.

Upon receiving that psychic message, they will commit every bit of energy into ripening ASAP so they can be overripe in 3 days.

[–] chicken@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago

Actual avocado life hack: buy way too many avocados, then when they decide to be ripe on their own time, cut them into cubes and freeze them. Now you have avocado on demand whenever you want.

[–] TheDoctorDonna@piefed.ca 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I'm not sure if it worked or not but I read that storing them in a paper bag will help them ripen a bit faster, but not "I need it for this supper recipe tonight" fast. I figure if it didn't work it was a pretty harmless hack and I still had avocado, I just waited until it was ready to do the recipe I wanted.

[–] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 1 points 23 hours ago

Paper bag with an apple ripens everything. Does everyone not know this??

[–] morgan_423@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 13 hours ago)

The only life hack that I use on a regular basis is covering toilet flush sensors with TP. It works pretty reliably to keep them from flushing until you're actually ready to leave.

Figured that out earlier in life when a certain office toilet would wait until I was exactly 50% done peeing, so that I couldn't stop or dodge, and then it would power flush and send up a nice germ-ridden uriney mist. Blocking the sensor until I was done totally fixed it.

Pretty much any other life hack that looked interesting to me has been effectively pointless and did not see continued use. I don't think I've ever tried one that was detrimental though... just useless.

Coconut oil for skin moisturizer.

Fuck you, turns out its maximally comedogenic.

Found out later that sunflower oil is top tier.

[–] IWW4@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 day ago

I have never seen a lifehack that wasn't worthless.

[–] zdhzm2pgp@lemmy.ml 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Anything on lifehacker 🤦

[–] mo_lave@reddthat.com 2 points 1 day ago

Example? I remember one about using high-contrast keyboards in phones and it was amazing for me.
