Did Burt Reynolds and Scott Bakula?...wait...

[–] Blemish5236@lemmy.world 1 points 6 hours ago

Sometimes it only passes when you die, but that doesn't mean it won't pass.

[–] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 3 points 9 hours ago (2 children)

I'm out of the loop on this one. Can someone cue me in on who this is, and what the significance and context is?

[–] alekwithak@lemmy.world 4 points 4 hours ago

So instead of tweets now people put their little comments as the caption to a short form video where they just stare at the camera and then other people screencap that and share it like an image macro, but instead of socially awkward penguin it's this fuckin guy.

[–] roscoe@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 9 hours ago

Maybe there's another layer if you know who he is but I think it's just some fucking guy and the point is the words and his facial expression/body language.

[–] FatVegan@leminal.space 29 points 19 hours ago (2 children)

I remember when people said that twitter screenshots aren't memes. Now we look at screencaps from the brainrot apps and it's somehow supposed to be funny

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 1 points 3 hours ago

I would take this over the obvious rage-bait and bullshit people pump out in vast volumes every day to get people to click on their channel, to see their ads, to buy their health-sludge, or to retweet for "engagement."

At least this is just a conversation starter and no watermarks to someone's essential-oil and vaccine-alternative supplements.

[–] pulsewidth@lemmy.world 7 points 16 hours ago

Maybe this is a meta meme.

When will the bullshit of posting captioned screenshots from social media pass?

[–] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 1 points 9 hours ago

That roof awning will pass on staying up before this fuckup settles.

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 8 points 15 hours ago

Well, first it gets worse.

[–] xxce2AAb@feddit.dk 28 points 21 hours ago

"Well, you see, it did. You just didn't notice because its passing was overshadowed by the veritable tsunami of shit that replaced it. Take heart though! That too shall pa- Oh, look! Another one coming in!"

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 5 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

That kidney stone must hurt like a sonuvvabitch.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 7 hours ago

That doesn't quite look like gut hunch to me, but I am not quite an expert

[–] MoffKalast@lemmy.world 6 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

"You too shall pass."

[–] PM_ME_VINTAGE_30S@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 19 hours ago

Here's your eta: η

[–] kablez@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago

It gets better when you get used to this problem and something far worse comes along, making you wish you just had the original problem.

[–] JoMiran@lemmy.ml 7 points 21 hours ago

Like a kidney stone.

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 4 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

It will pass when the left overcomes our internal differences and works together to fight the fascists instead of each other.

[–] kablez@lemmy.world 2 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

I agree with this, but it's more than just getting along that the left is failing at. We need to organise better, fight more effectively and build strong communities. This is something the religious folks have mastered.

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 3 points 16 hours ago (2 children)

That's why I think we need to use more religious techniques. And no, I don't mean ML brainwashing. I mean we need spiritual ceremonies. We need to use magic as part of our praxis. We need to liberate our minds from the religious brainwashing of capitalism.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

We need to use magic as part of our praxis.

Yeah, that'll get the left to unite around you 🙄

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 0 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 9 hours ago) (1 children)

The rich are using magic. We need it too, in order to have an equal footing.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

The rich are using magic.

Sure thing, bud.

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 1 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago) (1 children)

They take a mundane piece of paper, print a picture on it, and it's imbued with metaphysical power that the poor would kill and die to obtain.

And they don't even have to print it to make more! They can just lend and borrow it to create more money out of thin air! That's how the 2008 financial crisis happened. Too much magic mucking with the money.

They buy newspapers and TV stations so they can rewrite the reality that the people believe in. Create a mirage of nukes in Iran through rhetoric. Illusion magic.

They trap your mind in a prison, and they have more than one prison for different kinds of people. Some of the prisons look like you're working against them, but it just advances their agenda further.

Not to mention the Pope. He's got so much magical power over people. But the new kid on the block to challenge Christianity is the worship of money. Trump knows it, he's made himself a religion.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

So I guess I wonder what you believe the word "magic" means...

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Observable phenomena caused by things that aren't real. Money isn't real, but we see it make the world work. It's powered by collective belief. Magic.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

Money is real. And please don't waste your time, I know the argument you're going to make and it's stupid. It doesn't matter if it's based on piles of shiny metal or not. It's real. You can learn all about it if you want by studying economics. You'll find out pretty quickly that there's nothing magic about it.

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 1 points 9 hours ago

Money is a social construct. Money can be real, but only to people who are either so ignorant they don't understand the issue, or to people who admit that reality is also a social construct.

[–] kablez@lemmy.world 1 points 10 hours ago (2 children)

I'm intrigued to hear you mention magic. I'm a software engineer and technical director of my own media studio. I have recently been trying to nudge my career into that next level where I just tell people what I do is magic, so I don't have to go too deep into the inner workings. I can explain the how, but honestly over the years I've learned people don't want to know how things work they just want to reap the benefits.

In Jodorowsky's Technopriests, the protagonist seeks to guide his people to a place where they can establish a new society. One where harmonious human relationships are valued more than technological prowess corrupted by an excess of total science and a total lack of consciousness.

I wonder how we can replicate such a journey in real life. Because it's desperately needed.

[–] Grail@multiverse.soulism.net 2 points 10 hours ago

If you're lucky enough to live in Australia, get to know the Aboriginal people in your local community. Attend some Indigenous cultural events as a learner. White culture has forgotten how to value relationships over technology, but Indigenous culture still remembers. Just remember not to be a nuisance. Listen, be respectful, and do what you can to give as much help as you receive.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 0 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago)

Jodorowski is a loon with zero qualifications in science or philosophy. I'm not sure why a person would take anything he says about reality with anything less than a grain of salt. Especially when it eschews actual, real, science.

[–] danekrae@lemmy.world 4 points 20 hours ago* (last edited 20 hours ago)

On a real note, that phrase is not about what's happening around you, but how you feel about it.

"Accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."

2040-2041, give or take.

I'm not even kidding.

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 3 points 3 hours ago* (last edited 3 hours ago)

Probably right.

I'm half a century old or so, I've seen the cycles the US goes through and the world broadly. I know that the pendulum always swings, and sometimes it swings further in one direction than another, but that just means the back-swing is going to go further and harder. But those are generally 20 - 30 year cycles or so, that's how long it takes for a new generation who forgot everything about their childhood to take the reigns and start the cycle over.

The thing that we need to shake off our species though is the idea of an "end."

Your laundry never ends. Washing the dishes never ends. You never exercise so much you don't need to anymore. You will always be moving forward in time and through periods of change. Yes, this too shall pass... to be replaced by new things that will also pass.

If we could get better about managing our present moment we wouldn't need to keep staring out for some imagined end-of-the-road where everything is fine and we're suddenly happy again for some reason. While you're staring out looking for that, your current life and opportunity to find peace is just rapidly slipping past.

[–] GreenShimada@lemmy.world 1 points 4 hours ago

I would bet close to then things are returning to a form of stability that might resemble something livable and where one would want to raise children. Sorta....

For a ~25yo male in the US I believe the median is 50 more years

[–] meme_historian@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 18 hours ago

You gotta make it pass

[–] TheTechnician27@lemmy.world 3 points 20 hours ago

Sure, let me just estimate your remaining lifespan and get back to you on that.
