Illegal war of aggression

He said the words. He also didn't fumble around doing a both-sidesy condemnation of Iran. As far as I'm aware, that's already the best comment on a US war for a elected US politician this Century.

I don't trust any American politician in a position of power (because I've seen what America does to leaders they don't like around the world...) but I'm glad he's said it, even if it's just "his brand" and he doesn't really care. Someone's got to speak some sense, for whatever reason it might be.

This is a true leader of the people!!!

So sensible, clear and direct response to the recent events.

Am i crazy for thinking most “iranian new yorkers” are the kind of freaks who are marching in the streers for the return of the shah?

[–] orc_princess@lemmy.ml 6 points 1 day ago

They can rest assured they'll be safe while advocating for a holocaust against their homeland 😌

AFAIK, a lot of Iranian-Americans go by "Persian" because there was already such a stigma associated with the name Iran.

[–] mirshafie@europe.pub 10 points 1 day ago

A lot of those people are actually ultra-racist, which is why they emphasize Persian. They hate Iranian Lurs, Balochis, Turks, Arabs, Kurds. They hate their American/Western counterparts too. And don't gt them started on Black people.

They're just racists who think they're the top White race, true Aryans.

Normal Iranians are not like that. Iran is multi-ethnic and multi-cultural by history as well as by its National myth.

Just wanted to add some clarity on the term Persian. Persian is an ethnicity, the majority ethnicity in Iran. So one could be Iranian (citizenship) and Persian (ethnicity), or Australian (citizenship) and Persian (ethnicity).

[–] merc@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 day ago

I think a lot of people use it instead of Iranian. Technically it might be an ethnicity. But, for example, I can find restaurants that advertise having Afghani food but no restaurants with Pashtun or Tajik food, restaurants with Syrian food but not Arabic or Kurdish restaurants, etc. But, while most restaurants go by the name of the country, not the ethnic group, there are no Iranian restaurants, only Persian ones.

@pete_link @Susan_calvin is there any way to talk #Zohran (@NYCMayor) into getting out of X and e.g. into Mastodon – or at least Bluesky+bridgy?

As much as I wish I could agree that he pulled through...

First paragraph: great. If only the post ended here.

Second paragraph: I'm gonna... uhm... increase the coordination with the repressive state apparatus to Increase Safety™.

Third paragraph: Anyways, we as New Yorkers don't really have to fear any retaliation from Iran, so no worries, you can go back to brunch after you express your dissent on social media.

And don't get me wrong. It IS a genuine improvement over "Maduro is a dictator" approach to US foreign policy, so critical support is due.

I also read it that way on a first pass because I missed the "Iranian" in "Iranian New Yorkers". He's probably referring to the likely surge in hate crimes against Iranians that's bound to happen, and that he'll (allegedly) work to prevent it.

[–] LeninsBeard@hexbear.net 35 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I feel like the third paragraph is definitely directed at Iranians worried about getting hate crimed considering the US' history with this sort of thing.

[–] cornishon@lemmygrad.ml 16 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Oh shit, I actually missed that he said Iranian New Yorkers. I retract the point about the third paragraph then. The post is not bad actually.

[–] Cataphract@lemmy.ml 9 points 1 day ago

I took the 2nd paragraph meaning as protecting infrastructure/public works like power, water, hospitals, etc. A call out for those worried that went through 9/11 kinda thing. I've lived in an area where those have been attacked and the disruption of one incident can lasts weeks from a single bullet. Emergency management officials and commissioner are the two key points and this is a city mayor, not state senator or federal leanings.

This is the best you will get from an american politician, be glad he is not condemning Iran for defending itself!

I love Zoharn. I just wish New York wasn’t as stuck up as it is. I tried to go to a bar in jeans and a tshirt and they rejected me. Why? My money is good enough. Their cocktails were only $19 so it’s not a fancy place.

I much prefer Seattle for the culture vibes. But I miss the 24/7 transit.

[–] how_we_burned@lemmy.zip 1 points 16 hours ago

Only $20 bucks for two nips of spirits mixed in some sugared fruit juice.

Sounds like great value
