Be nice. Assume others have good intent (within reason).

Block or ignore posts, comments, and users that irritate you in some way rather than engaging. Report if they are actually breaking community rules.

Most 196 posts are memes, shitposts, cute images, or even just recent things that happened, etc. There is no real theme, but try to avoid posts that are very inflammatory, offensive, very low quality, or very "off topic".

Bigotry is not allowed, this includes (but is not limited to): Homophobia, Transphobia, Racism, Sexism, Abelism, Classism, or discrimination based on things like Ethnicity, Nationality, Language, or Religion.

Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

that pupil dilation is bonkers tho

[–] lime@feddit.nu 37 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

apparently he got it from being punched in the eye as a kid. it was permanent.

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 6 hours ago* (last edited 6 hours ago) (1 children)

I actually have this same thing, one pupil is very often far more dilated than the other.

Did Karate as a kid to young adult, for a decade, been in a number of other kinds of tussles... I've actually taken more serious blows to the head than I can count.

... I am also a twink, so, there's that too, lol.

Oh. It's also the same eye, left eye, that's dilated.

... Huh.

bowie had a lot of surgery from the hit to the face, over a couple of months. if you don't remember having that, then i think the eye thing is not your biggest issue

[–] sp3ctr4l@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 5 hours ago* (last edited 5 hours ago)

Oh I didn't have surgery because I am poor and didn't / don't have good healthcare.

I've been seriously concussed and/or outright knocked out cold... well, again, more times than I can remember.

You are right though: I am now a year + into my own daily at-home PT to recover from my latest, and by far most significant wallop, so I do in fact have bigger issues at present.

It's a shame, haven't been able to get out to any Karaoke spots in a while... it's been so long.

This happened in my hometown, Rochester, NY. It has become an eternal part of local lore. You can find his mugshot everywhere.

Your honor this man is accused of selling the world in exchange for a pound of marijuana.

Mugshots are so bizarre to me. It's a modern form of the mediaeval public shaming bloc..

[–] zikzak025@lemmy.world 9 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago) (1 children)

On the other hand, a legal obligation to collect and publish mugshots on intake prevents people from getting disappeared.

Though that's still a concern in the US these days, when ICE is able to just kidnap people off the streets and ship them wherever with no due process.

[–] Cybersec@piefed.social 2 points 7 hours ago

Wow I never thought of that reason, thank you for the insight.

[–] Thorry@feddit.org 3 points 7 hours ago

It is actually illegal to publish the name, face or any identifying information about suspects in some countries. Just because you are suspected of a crime, doesn't mean you've lost your right to privacy. And it only helps to further public outrage and mob justice. The media can tell their stories just fine without naming or showing the people who are suspected of doing so.

mediaeval public shaming bloc..

The word you're looking for is "pillory."

I probably have been playing too much Kingdom Come: Deliverance II.

[–] pirc_lover@feddit.uk 1 points 6 hours ago

I can see the rationale in their publishing after someone has been proven guilty for certain crimes.

Like, I think being able to recognise confirmed rapist Brock Allen Turner is pretty good.

[–] mech@feddit.org 3 points 7 hours ago

The fact that mugshots stay public long after the convicted have done their time, or even if they haven't been convicted, is abhorrent.
Demand better!
