Terry Pratchet has been telling us the truth for decades and only now are people starting to listen.

just started color of magic.

[–] Twinklebreeze@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago (2 children)

I recently read all of the Discworld novels in release order (really glad I chose release instead of some other order) and I think the first couple of books are by far my least favorite. Still good books, but they get much better.

I recently read all the discworld novels as well, but I took everyone's advice about not reading them in release order and I really regretted it. I swapped to release order partway through and it was so much better.

Release order is the way to go. Like, I get why people prefer alternate orders, like by theme etc, but there's a legit magic to the world building that gets glossed over when jumping around.

Its a good way, if you don't mind knowing the first handful are going to be not great.

I generally recommend Guards! Guards! as a starting point and if you like that go back and start at the beginning.

I thing Guards! Is really where Terry got into his stride and if you don't like that you don't like Discworld.

I have it on good authority that it’s elephants all the way down

[–] hissingmeerkat@sh.itjust.works 14 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Is this really what science education has come to? Everybody knows it's turtles all the way down.

[–] makyo@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Ha damn there was a tiny voice inside telling me I was getting the quote wrong while I typed too. Should have listened to it.

Yes but what of the fifth elephant

[–] desiccated_event@piefed.blahaj.zone 16 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Fine and dandy, but the real question is what is the sex of the Great A'Tuin?

[–] tuff_wizard@aussie.zone 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I thought the real question was "when you get down do it, what is it really all about?"

[–] ceiphas@piefed.social 6 points 5 days ago

"Things just happen. What the hell"

[–] Kowowow@lemmy.ca 2 points 5 days ago

Well unless they allow eggs from males then my guess is female or hermaphroditic in some form

[–] ApeNo1@lemmy.world 1 points 5 days ago

Is that the elephant named Leeloo?

[–] daannii@lemmy.world 6 points 5 days ago

What's under the turtle tho?

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 7 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

That's the neat thing about A'Tuin, he's the swimming type of Giant Space Turtle. Vastness, that's what's under Him, and all around Him.

It's turtles all the way down

[–] Steve@startrek.website 1 points 5 days ago

A bigger turtle.

[–] Una@europe.pub 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Now A.I.-powered by A.I.!

Idk if you heard about the concave Earth "theory" but I think that's the real update.

I listen to this guy (IIRC, he tried killing Donald Trump, went to jail and died there of medical complications; man was cuckoo but I don't think he was a baaaad dude, besides the attempted assassination and thinking he was the second coming of Jesus, literally) sometimes as sleep aid, I've "learned" a lot, lol.
