Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

Still cheaper than having kids

[–] TerminalEncounter@hexbear.net 32 points 1 day ago (3 children)

I love the fertility rate collapse story because liberals and capitalists cant solve it and seem unable to see that people arent having children because of capitalism, especially this later stage one. The more right wing among em always insist its pure culture and we just gotta get a different culture - so their hail mary (as stated in the article) is stuff like a national holiday to "celebrate families" and wouldnt you know it, people will be forced to work it regardless lol. Or if they're really using their noodles they'll be like "ah but Taylor Swift having a kid and other celebrities will make people ignore their material conditions and have kids." The really dark ones are when they suggest banning birth control (rates collapsed before birth control and they were higher even when birth control was around for 30 to 40 years before collapsing later), or just straight up forced birth- this is the Musk post unstated suggestion of "we might have to take rights away from women" kind of thing, think Gilead but worse.

Also, the idea of taxing childless people is bad on its face. Like regardless, some people are just infertile through no fault of their own. Tax em for a health condition, sure whatever 🙄 Secondly, we really want parents who only had kids for the tax benefits and not cause they love their kids?? They really can't square the circle while keeping capitalism, and they have to keep capitalism so I guess its just intractable then

I'm still expected to leave my personal life out of work when my work is inside of my personal life. No kids yet, but if ever they're going to impact my work because they need this thing called attention gasp. Goddamn tax write offs ruining my career... Common capitalism L

You're using your mind and thinking rationally, it's much much easier just to blame the jews and black people for falling birth rates.

Always with those pesky goddamn internal contradictions!

Careful now, you know what has happened in the past to politicians trying to get people to fuck.

[–] Andrzej3K@hexbear.net 28 points 1 day ago

I think ideally these fuckers would like to turn women into broodmares, but even that would involve increasing men's wages so 🤷

[–] sewer_rat_420@hexbear.net 7 points 19 hours ago

Don't we already do (or used to do) something similar in America through child tax credits? I think you might get the cash upfront but it is still effectively a discount on your taxes.

[–] Staines@hexbear.net 13 points 23 hours ago

I will not pay the straight jizya tax. the-doohickey

[–] FuckyWucky@hexbear.net 18 points 1 day ago

Will the tax be higher than the money and labor cost of raising a child lol?

[–] an_engel_on_earth@hexbear.net 8 points 22 hours ago

out of all the soviet policies they could choose to copy...

[–] Sodium_nitride@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

Besides just not wanting to have kids, being taxed for being trans, not straight, infertile, didability, or single.

ow many of these "exogenous" conditions will exemptions be made for?

If exemptions are made for being single, then this discentivises marriage (lol)

Exemptions for infertility will probably be made, although there is no way they'll make it easy to get an exemption.

Exemptions for sexual orientation, under reform? Not happening (another reason to hate cishets)

Exemptions for minority groups or "genetically disabled" will almost certainly be made (because why wouldn't reform pursue eugenics?)

[–] someone@hexbear.net 8 points 21 hours ago

The only exemptions will be for situations mostly affecting middle-to-upper class cis men. I have no hard evidence for that assumption, but I would bet money on it.

Not carrot, only stick

[–] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 10 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Are they giving the taxes to people with kids? I don't understand the logic

[–] someone@hexbear.net 15 points 1 day ago

People with less to lose are harder to control. It's not about money, it's about power.

[–] Muinteoir_Saoirse@hexbear.net 6 points 23 hours ago

They give people with kids child benefits, yeah, but that's not really how taxes work when you have a fiat currency. Taxes are meant to take money out of circulation, they aren't what finances government expenditure.
