This is for strictly mildly interesting material. If it's too interesting, it doesn't belong. If it's not interesting, it doesn't belong.

This is obviously an objective criteria, so the mods are always right. Or maybe mildly right? Ahh.. what do we know?

Just post some stuff and don't spam.

Biden is a centrist at best. Far left my ass. Our view of the political spectrum is so warped.

[–] Ashtear@piefed.social 22 points 6 days ago (1 children)

74% describe Obama, someone that literally wrote a pro-deregulation op-ed in The Wall Street Journal while in office, as left wing.

This is what people are talking about when they say there's no left-wing representation in America.

[–] devolution@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

To a conservative, anything left of them is far left.

[–] Thedogdrinkscoffee@lemmy.ca 14 points 6 days ago (1 children)

He would be considered a solid right in Canada.

[–] atrielienz@lemmy.world 9 points 6 days ago

I considered him to be solid right when he started his career. His politics is definitely not far right, and it's leaned more left over time. But I would consider him right, except the far right have gone so off the deep end. We also don't have like... An anarchist party or any real far left politicians in America.

That's most of the reason I said "at best". He's much farther right than the right seem to think he is. Everything is messed up here.

"Our"....

You should know that there is a constant in American political geography that 30-35% are crazy people who watch Fox News (or similar) as their only news source.

[–] yermaw@sh.itjust.works 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Describes a terrifying situation thst could be ripped straight from the pages of a Stephen King novel .

its quite annoying.

Its truly baffling the level of crazy bullshit is just normal now.

Who the fuck are the 4% that thought Trump was far left?!?

[–] CombatWombatEsq@lemmy.world 16 points 6 days ago

Those are people who are just voting to move the Overton window right.

[–] AmidFuror@fedia.io 14 points 6 days ago (1 children)

Same ones who thought Obama didn't do enough as President on 9/11.

"We got to get to the bottom why Obama wasnt in the white house on 9/11"

Lizardman Constant

[–] Tanoh@lemmy.world 8 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago)

In all surveys you always get a small percentage that either doesn't understand the question or just likes to troll. I am hoping that is this.

Edit: also a few that said Bernie and AOC are far right

[–] Objection@lemmy.ml 4 points 6 days ago

You haven't seen the bajillion thinkpieces about how Trump is actually Maoist, somehow? 1 2 3

[–] grue@lemmy.world 38 points 6 days ago (3 children)

Note the bias in the chart, putting "not sure" to the right of "centrist." The whole thing is skewed because of it!

[–] AmidFuror@fedia.io 9 points 6 days ago

"Not sure" should be a separate graph. It makes it look like the perception of people who are less known is not as extreme. The graph should show the opinions of people who have opinions.

[–] ElderWendigo@sh.itjust.works 3 points 6 days ago

Agreed. "Not sure" should be the same choice as centrist. Either they should share the center space as the same answer or centrist shouldn't even be a choice, especially when the survey also lists center right and center left as options.

Zohran and Kamala are tied for far-left at 37%. How tf? One of these people wanted to tax the rich and one of these people wanted to give tax breaks for private equity to build homes.

[–] VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world 6 points 6 days ago

Propoganda is a hell of a drug.

[–] friendlymessage@feddit.org 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

"Not sure" is screwing with the results. Probably most of those 36% simply don't know who he is. If you omit "not sure", Mamdani is on top

[–] ameancow@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

“Not sure” is screwing with the results.

The "Not Sure" column isn't just doing a lot of heavy lifting, it's actually a really deep insight into how fucked we are.

Look at Trump, 50% say far right, and then you might as well just write off the rest of that row as "not sure" because if you don't see his politics as anything but far-right you're equally uninformed. Basically, for conservatives on this list, anything left of their actual politics is "I have no idea what's going on."

This lines up well with the 2024 exit polling where millions and millions of people who voted for Obama or supported Bernie Sanders voted for Trump because "they weren't sure who to vote for."

We had the highest voter turnouts in recorded US history for the last several federal elections, our problem was not turnout, it has been and will continue to be people who give zero shits about politics and just vote for whoever's face they see the most, because the well has been poisoned so deeply and the earth salted so that no ideas can grow. They engineered cynicism in so much of the population by amplifying every social debate to the point of absurdity that people checked out of politics. The CIA and KGB wrote about doing this deliberately to populations to destabilize democracies over 50 years ago.

[–] kadu@scribe.disroot.org 31 points 6 days ago (11 children)

Bernie and AOC being described as "far left" makes me think US citizens are even more politically illiterate than I previously thought, which is extremely surprising, because I already believed they had the political literacy of an unborn child.

[–] atrielienz@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago (2 children)

The problem is how far the entire country's politics has shifted right. They are far left in comparison to the other politicians up for comparison. We literally have no representation for Marxism, communism, socialism, or anarchism. Because of that, it's basically all right wing politicians by a proper metric but some will fall left of the center of the median line for the politicians we have.

I do agree that America as a whole has a political literacy problem.

Harris? Far left? Hahahaha oh my!

[–] DigitalAudio@sopuli.xyz 1 points 4 days ago

I guess if your scale goes from 11 to 11.5, then the former is still closer to -11

[–] artifex@piefed.social 24 points 6 days ago (4 children)

Everything about this is nuts, but a special lol Kamala Harris on the far-left.

[–] bouh@lemmy.world 4 points 6 days ago

Kamala Harris number makes a gauge for the proportion of maga brainwashed people.

lol americans' political literacy and their overton window are both fucked.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 13 points 5 days ago

We're doomed

The overton window is smashing itself against the right wall so hard that even a milder progressive like Bernie is perceived as far left.

[–] olosta@lemmy.world 13 points 6 days ago (3 children)

Putting Cheney on the Left is just wild, I had to check her Wikipedia page and there is absolutely nothing remotely leftist in any of her positions and actions.

[–] higgsboson@piefed.social 5 points 6 days ago

You are correct that she is a pretty standard neocon in her platform.

Sadly, it is not even hyperbole to say that: in the US, denouncing Trump while accepting a family member who is gay (having eventually reconciled with her sister Mary,) makes her a super-turbo-leftist as far as most low-information voters are concerned.

There is not a single person on this list who could truly be described as left and only one who could even be described as centrist (Mamdani)

[–] Quadhammer@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago (5 children)

Who could then be described as left? You know being left of center counts you as left, right?

This is a horribly depressing chart.

[–] djdarren@piefed.social 9 points 6 days ago

Not even John Fetterman is really sure of John Fetterman's political views these days.

[–] stressballs@lemmy.zip 8 points 6 days ago

Okay, but what's the source of the data?? This is some what meaningless without that. Info like that is pretty important. Many people already sharing this without any questions.

[–] PixelatedSaturn@lemmy.world 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

The republicans are way more successful in their propaganda. They designate popular people as far left and that is amplified in the media. That doesn't happen on the other side

[–] birdwing@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Being called far left by the RINOs is a compliment.

Makes me sad that so few people know what kind of a ratfuck collins is. She's a far right plant pretending to be center.

Oops! Its all right!
