Welcome to c/news! We aim to foster a book-club type environment for discussion and critical analysis of the news. Our policy objectives are:

We ask community members to appreciate the uncertainty inherent in critical analysis of current events, the need to constantly learn, and take part in the community with humility. None of us are the One True Leftist, not even you, the reader.

Newcomm and Newsmega Rules:

The Hexbear Code of Conduct and Terms of Service apply here.

  1. Link titles: Please use informative link titles. Overly editorialized titles, particularly if they link to opinion pieces, may get your post removed.

  2. Content warnings: Posts on the newscomm and top-level replies on the newsmega should use content warnings appropriately. Please be thoughtful about wording and triggers when describing awful things in post titles.

  3. Fake news: No fake news posts ever, including April 1st. Deliberate fake news posting is a bannable offense. If you mistakenly post fake news the mod team may ask you to delete/modify the post or we may delete it ourselves.

  4. Link sources: All posts must include a link to their source. Screenshots are fine IF you include the link in the post body. If you are citing a Twitter post as news, please include the Xcancel.com (or another Nitter instance) or at least strip out identifier information from the twitter link. There is also a Firefox extension that can redirect Twitter links to a Nitter instance, such as Libredirect or archive them as you would any other reactionary source.

  5. Archive sites: We highly encourage use of non-paywalled archive sites (i.e. archive.is, web.archive.org, ghostarchive.org) so that links are widely accessible to the community and so that reactionary sources don’t derive data/ad revenue from Hexbear users. If you see a link without an archive link, please archive it yourself and add it to the thread, ask the OP to fix it, or report to mods. Including text of articles in threads is welcome.

  6. Low effort material: Avoid memes/jokes/shitposts in newscomm posts and top-level replies to the newsmega. This kind of content is OK in post replies and in newsmega sub-threads. We encourage the community to balance their contribution of low effort material with effort posts, links to real news/analysis, and meaningful engagement with material posted in the community.

  7. American politics: Discussion and effort posts on the (potential) material impacts of American electoral politics is welcome, but the never-ending circus of American Politics© Brought to You by Mountain Dew™ is not welcome. This refers to polling, pundit reactions, electoral horse races, rumors of who might run, etc.

  8. Electoralism: Please try to avoid struggle sessions about the value of voting/taking part in the electoral system in the West. c/electoralism is right over there.

  9. AI Slop: Don't post AI generated content. Posts about AI race/chip wars/data centers are fine.

They do this on purpose. They know these munitions are not supposed to be aimed at people and yet they go for headshots with baton rounds that could inflict tbi.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 33 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That's the fun thing, LTL rounds were definitely not made to be ricocheted off the ground

That's what the Pigs say, gives them the excuse of single officers not doing it right, that they just need more money

The rounds were made specifically to inflict crippling injuries, everything that they said otherwise came after they were criticized

[–] CthulhusIntern@hexbear.net 13 points 4 days ago (1 children)

That excuse doesn't even make sense on its face. Not even the best snipers on Earth can calculate a ricochet to effectively hit someone in combat.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 12 points 4 days ago

Yeah, it's literally just them making up a "reasonable" use case so they can go "Sowwy, we made an oopsie" when someone gets their skull cracked open

And it's very telling that even the "proper" usage would result in shattered bones

A lot of groups were putting out primers around 2020 about protecting oneself with helmets, goggles, respirators, etc. I am curious if something like a Mechanix-style glove with the hard plastic covering the knuckles and fingers would have provided our heroine any protection?

Edit:

  • Are there gloves that maintain dexterity that can protect ones hands from ~~LTL~~ impact munititions?
  • Are there groin cups that are unobtrusive and do not limit mobility that can protect testicle-havers from ~~LTL~~ munition impacts? I think there are flexible sports cups but I wonder if that would be enough protection, maybe there are low profile hard cups.
  • Anyone know about "bump caps"? They look like baseball caps but provide a degree of impact protection without making it obvious the wearer is helmeted - does this protect the head from impact munitions?

Edit 2: I was using cop speak calling them less than lethals the-pigs

Amerikans are in the fortunate situation that they can still wear armor to protests, which does not apply to all countries in the imperial core. They should use every advantage they can get.

clown-to-clown-communication clown-to-clown-conversation This is us except not being clowns. I'm wondering about the specifics of 1) protecting extremities, and 2) the use of protective gear that does not get the wearer targeted. The oinkers love to focus in on people who have taken steps to protect themselves from their brutality.

Imagine if all this shit causes the right to pass gun reform. Sorry plebs can't have guns and body armor anymore because The Libs are bringing those things to protests!

[–] Rom@hexbear.net 18 points 4 days ago (1 children)

They would ban body armor for protestors first

[–] Fossifoo@hexbear.net 8 points 3 days ago

In Germany you aren't even allowed to wear a mask or scarf and things like helmets, goggles & respirators are classified as "defensive weaponry" if used at protests. Arguably this even applies to padding and boots. Anything that makes you less vulnerable to the piggies using force against you.

Modern athletic cups aren't bad, they make boxer brief style carriers. They are made for mobility and relative comfort.

There are motorcycle gloves with hard plastic or carbon fiber knuckle protectors. Bonus benefit, they happen to be great for punching with.

[–] mickey@hexbear.net 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Thanks for the recs, I'll check on the cups if I ever need this kind of PPE. Those riding gloves are serious business, those would work for sure! The only issue I see there is affordability e.g. could a group buy a bunch of pairs to hand out to people and also conspicuousness. But I am thinking the Mechanix gloves I was thinking of would not do the trick.

[–] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 3 points 3 days ago

There's a lot to be said for something made to keep your hand together in a motorcycle crash. I have not been failed by riding gear. Many of the jackets have armor built into them as well. I'm fond of Icon gear.

"Well, actually..." on a horrible physical injury.

Mods have pinned a comment by u/eeyoreocookie:

It’s so important we are accurate as fuck with our language when describing the horrible shit ICE is doing to us.

Part of her hand was not blown off. Her hand was split between her middle finger and pointer finger. This is still a severe and traumatic injury but again…. language and accuracy is important. DO NOT give MAGA the opportunity to damage our credibility by exaggerating. What truly happened to this woman is horrific enough.

[–] FlakesBongler@hexbear.net 36 points 4 days ago

It's so fucking exhausting

They're going to lie anyway, so make sure you're always painfully accurate! smuglord

[–] Infamousblt@hexbear.net 26 points 4 days ago

I'm sure they use the same rigorous tone policing when talking about Gaza

[–] Hmm@hexbear.net 25 points 4 days ago

It doesn't hurt to be as accurate in our description as possible as information becomes available, because it shows to people who is being responsible and serious with their knowledge. But we shouldn't expect anything from Chuds themselves except inventing a story to justify what happened regardless of the facts.

They're working backwards from "The actions of ICE are good and correct" and they largely are deeply unserious in their replies when disagreeing with the facts of the matter. The narratives they spin are merely a front-facing excuse to justify their our-might-makes-right worldview. Just look at how some of them ran with an invented story about Pretti brandishing a gun at ICE.

The fascists want to assert racist and patriarchal violence upon the everyone (including in usually more subtle or unnoticed ways upon themselves, which keeps them in line) and anything they say or do is an excuse in service of this, so handle your interactions with them accordingly.

If anyone tries to downplay or well actually this, just pick up a hammer and ask them to put their hand on the table

[–] BilduEnjoyer@hexbear.net 18 points 4 days ago

One time I was cutting onions with a mandolin slicer and I got too cocky and ended up slicing the very tip of my finger off and getting onion juice on it. It was the second most painful thing I ever experienced and I can’t imagine having your whole hand fucked up like that, no wonder she’s rolling on the ground, fuck.

P.S. FUCK ICE.

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 13 points 4 days ago

Hey libs, do you still think chuds will be like 'oh no, WE'RE the bad guys!'
