Couldn't respond with a single tweet without using AI

I don't need to understand the risks again and again, that's why they call me an "advanced user"...

Next phone is a flip phone or Nokia-style bar phone, call/text/Snake only, fuck this I'm out

Edit: anyone making custom firmware or xmpp apps for flip phones? maybe I'm only out of the smartphome game

This is one of the main reasons I even use Android over Apple.

"high-friction" sideloading flow

It's Android constantly fucking asking, "Are you sure about that?"

HarmonyOS Next stays winning

As soon as we get a stable reliable (proper) Linux phone, I'm ditching android forever.

More and more apps just don't work without attestation. No banking, no government stuff.

It's looking worse for a real open phone OS every year.

[–] aanes_appreciator@hexbear.net 11 points 6 days ago (2 children)

apps will stop working with so many hardware variations that people will just retvrn to web browsers eventually.

[–] TheVelvetGentleman@hexbear.net 18 points 6 days ago

You're overestimating the average smartphone user. For the majority of the market, things will continue to function as they expect otherwise there will be no market.

I need my phone to log into my banks website. (Fortunately my current bank doesn't cause problems with custom FW but others do)

It's basically not possible for me to do my taxes without a phone app that requires SafetyNet. (I don't need to do my taxes, my employer files taxes, but I'm probably missing out on some tax returns)

The public transport ticket app randomly stopped working on LineageOS after an app update. (I don't need to buy tickets on the phone but it's a lot more convenient)

This stuff is already really difficult for me to navigate but ideally FOSS mobile OSs are for everyone and not just nerds. I could never in good conscience wish that onto a person that isn't as tech interested.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 1 points 4 days ago

My city's public transport updated the ticket machines and they suddenly started throwing an error and refusing to accept my bank card. I had to download and learn the app on zero notice standing at the tram station while already running behind schedule. I fucking hate that goddamn app and I hate the city for forcing me to use it.

True, but I just mean that the same is coming for mainstream users too. so many apps are broken to shit or just websites in trench coats. eventually companies will stop paying for bespoke apps for every platform and move to web. Or, some mega corp that's threatened by Google's dominance will mount some n Linux phone campaign like Valve did for desktop gaming.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 2 points 5 days ago

This is not a matter of the the apps being broken. These are deliberate design choices based on the trusted computing (rather than trusted user) security model.

[–] swelter_spark@reddthat.com 4 points 6 days ago (1 children)

I just uninstall stuff like that. It's not a good idea to be doing anything that needs real security on a phone anyway.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 10 points 6 days ago

Like that's my choice lmao

[–] Seasonal_Peace@hexbear.net 16 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Im waiting so long for that, please any chinese brand please do it, free us from android and google

[–] jackmaoist@hexbear.net 9 points 6 days ago (2 children)

Chinese androids are fine since they have nothing to do with Google.

[–] supafuzz@hexbear.net 19 points 6 days ago (1 children)

xiaomi phones and tablets are still tied to google play services etc., at least in latam

[–] Seasonal_Peace@hexbear.net 8 points 6 days ago

Yeah in EU too

[–] Blakey@hexbear.net 13 points 6 days ago (2 children)

An android phone cannot have "nothing to do with google" because android is literally made by Google.

[–] miz@hexbear.net 4 points 6 days ago

true but Huawei has this:

HarmonyOS NEXT (鸿蒙星河版) is Huawei's self-developed, pure operating system, marking a complete break from Android by dropping support for APKs and relying solely on native apps built with ArkUI/ArkCompiler

it still allows you to run APKs in a container like EasyAbroad or DroiTong though

[–] jackmaoist@hexbear.net 3 points 6 days ago

Chinese ROMs in China are just AOSP with Chinese customisation. There is no Google Play Services and some vendors like Huawei are using it to transition to their own OS like Harmony OS. They're not dependent on Google in China.

huawei has their own real ecosystem, but only in china and they do or will probably do the same thing

[–] ReadFanon@hexbear.net 6 points 6 days ago

Same.

Nexphone isn't this, at least not currently, but I could see it lurching in this direction if it gets enough traction. Though no small part of me has the vaporware detector going off with this because it's promising a lot and at a very competitive price so I'm hesitant to put any hope in it until more info gets revealed.

We really ended up on the wrong timeline when the boat sailed on the Ubuntu Edge 💔

step 1 in banning installing apps unsanctioned by google overlords.

"sideloading" my ass btw.

[–] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 6 days ago (1 children)

"sideloading" my ass btw.

I'm not a fan of fucking with established terms, but I do wish news orgs would start consistently using the phrase "installing [uncertified/unapproved/non-vetted/unverified] software".

[–] umbrella@lemmy.ml 9 points 6 days ago* (last edited 6 days ago) (1 children)

the term is used to smear installing from outside the play store, which is why i hate it. just part of their thing to manufacture consent for taking over our computing.

i'm partial to "installing from outside the play store", "unsanctioned by google". or just simply "installing".

[–] Fossifoo@hexbear.net 3 points 6 days ago

I mean, you originally had to load them from the side via USB tether and adb. They just used the original term for something else.
