Boring kindergarten learning the alphabet stuff and horrifically terrible drawings that would be horrible by even kindergarten standards, IMO.

It's all pretty fragmented and fuzzy in my head, but I do have some very vague memories of what I'd consider now very boring class work like time telling, maths, and show and tell ( not as boring but whatever ) in first grade.

A lot of the early stuff I remember is the more boring stuff, when it comes to school, for the most part.

I cannot remember whether it was first or second grade, but I do remember during one of them we went to see a nature documentary type movie on bugs, which I hated and was disturbed by then and still am and still hate. Probably didn't like it one bit considering I can't remember anything about it. We saw it on an IMAX theater in a downtown park in my city. Worst. Field. Trip. Ever.

I still remember my first day at school, especially getting my Schultüte, which had a steam train design.

Omg we were in a Heidelberg department store on holiday one summer and I saw these everywhere. They looked SO exciting and full of promise! And I also loved those incredibly right-angled backpacks the kids wore. I knew it would never fly back home, but they looked a LOT more durable and manageable than just carrying everything in plastic bags lol

When they rolled in the TV to watch Challenger launch. I remember very little of school in general, but I remember that.

There was an iguana walking through the school campus.

One of my first memories was that my school had an iguana. There was a huge cage in the central area that the iguana roamed around

4th or 5th grade (9- 10 years old) in winter getting off the bus and walking on to school grounds I see drops of blood on the ground. I follow the trail thinking some kid got their nose busted and I might witness the spectacle. Follow the trail around the corner into the court yard where the flag pole was, look up and there's a coyote skinned, hung from a back leg tendon, frozen, bloody and a long bloody icicle hanging from it's nose. I can still see it in my mind to this day.

For some context, this school was across from the high school and it was a big football rival playing our team that day. Our school mascot is the Lobos (wolf in Spanish).

My second year teacher had a pair of "magic glasses". If she put them on, she could instantly speak any language. My 5 year old self was absolutely flabbergasted by that. It still occupies my mind sometimes at 35.

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

W h a t

How did you know she was speaking other klnguages? Is it possible she just spoke gibberish because you wouldn't be able to tell the difference?

[–] Twongo@lemmy.ml 5 points 4 days ago (2 children)

that one kid i talked to occasionally during recess. He told me he had a CD which let you 'mix games' so you could for example pop in Wolfenstein & GTA into your Xbox and have a new cool game lol. Kids are dumb :) Hope he's doing well after all these years.

There's another story where i wanted to sneakily let out a fart but it was the unholiest, loudest fart i've ever experienced, the metal chair with thin wooden elements acted as an amplifier. The teacher looked at me in disbelief and calmly told me next time i should just go to the bathroom. That was highkey embarassing :D

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 2 points 4 days ago

Oh man kids and making shit up.

There was a kid who told me he had all these new mortal Kombat games. Just complete fabrications.

I told another kid that if you got all the chaos emeralds in sonic 3 (I'm old) you could turn into super sonic. Imagine my shock when that turned out to be true.

[–] Opisek@piefed.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Which begs the question; which two games would you mix?

[–] Twongo@lemmy.ml 2 points 4 days ago

from that time period? gta vice city and nfsu2 because that's what i loved as a kid x)

[–] remon@ani.social 4 points 4 days ago (1 children)

The day I was enrolled in school.

[–] SigmarStern@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 4 days ago

Yeah, that's a pretty rememberable event

I go in late with my mom first grade. The principal was there. She asked me which class I wanted to go in? I went with 1-1. And that was my class for the rest of the year.

[–] MuttMutt@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Got kicked out of a Catholic preschool because another boy said I couldn't hurt him and to hit him.

Ended up at another school and was much happier, loved playing with the water table and building things. Was later told I was beyond that level and was sent home.

[–] callyral@pawb.social 3 points 4 days ago

first day of pre-school/kindergarten, i thought my mom was gonna stay in the room with me for the first day, she did not, i felt betrayed. that is my supervillain origin story.

[–] Jakeroxs@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

After 9/11 my elementary school was blasting proud to be an American all day in the cafeteria.

[–] Zwuzelmaus@feddit.org 3 points 4 days ago

When we practised writing our very first letters, and I remember that it got boring immediately.

Literally the first day. First thing another student said to me, actually: "Why're you so white?" Next is the same year, I got in trouble because another kid ran in front of me while I was rolling down a hill

[–] thelsim@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 days ago

I was in pre-school and it was my turn to clean up and sweep the floor. Instead, I put that broom between my legs and pretended to be a witch.

*sigh* Good times…

I vaguely remember the front entrance gate to the kindergarden (or maybe it was a daycare, don't exactly remember) in Guangzhou, China...

I remember we had like a nap at noon.

Hmm honestly its so weird that I know I was probably there, but can't remember much of what happened there, maybe it was so boring that i wasn't memorable.

I do remember 1st and 2nd grade more vividly.

Don't remember the "first day" type of thing, but more like the general "vibe". I remember roughly what the building looked like. Like I can draw a basic map / layout of it... like with maybe 70% accuracy.

School there always felt kinda "weird" since they speak a different language than my parents speak (Cantonese at home, Mandarin in school), like as soon as I hear Mandarin, the "vibe"/"atmosphere" feels different... it feels more like "it's a strange place" and its "serious" time.

I remember the chalkboard.

I remember the teacher throwing a piece of chalk at a classmate that's not paying attention or sleeping or got the answer wrong something

I remember some "misbehaving" students get slapped with a 1 meter ruler

I remember the big red flag with the 5 yellow stars in the school yard (Flag of People's Republic of China)

I remember they do weird announcements in the school yard... and it was boring as hell

I remember like either monthly or weekly, they did a flag-raising ceremony and some kids bring the flag thing to the pole and did this weird ceremony of raising the flag and the national anthem is played... (US is kinda similar, lol) and then like we'd all be in the yard and they did weird announcements. I remember sometimes its about the tuition thing or sometimes vaccines or blood tests or stuff(?) I forgot...

I remember being on a bus for a school trip but forgot where we went, but I remember looking outside the window and feeling bored (cuz no smartphones lol, they didn't even exist I don't think) for the long drive.

I don't remember having friends... maybe sometimes randomly talking to someone... but because its Mandarin, it lacks the "warmth" of Cantonese which I speak at home every day.

I remember sometimes having to use the bathroom in the middle of class and I always felt so nervous to ask... as if it's rulebreaking or something, feels so guilty like: are you trying to get out of class?

I remember I was using the bathroom at the end of recess and use the bathroom, which was dirty as hell btw, this school is literally near a mountain... I think the plumbing just goes into the rivers in the mountain...

So I came back to the next class and I was sort of late and the teacher side-eyed me.

Felt like I did something wrong...

So then...

Sometime in like 2nd grade, mom told me we were immigrating to 美国 (America) and I shouldn't tell anyone so nobody gets "jealous" and wanna kidnap/murder me. (Mom is always paranoid about kidnappings lol)

I remember when I came to the US. It felt so... like there's this weird "western" feeling atmosphere... hard to describe...

So my mom took me to the neighborhood school... the teacher tried to do a basic "test" to see how smart I am and they think I'm ready for 3rd grade, since my mom convinced them to hold me back a grade so I can "learn English better", I started in 2nd grade instead.

Omg this is where I actually remembered my first day. So I get introduced to the teacher, she somehow studied in Beijing for 2 years(?) and knows a little bit of Mandarin... but still told Cantonese classmates to translate for me instead.

I remember feeling so anxious.

So foreign.

Literally in a foreign country.

This is NYC btw.

I had no idea what was going on. Class starts, teacher talks, no clue what is being said.

There's a weird board that has lights on it (it's a SmartBoard, never saw those in China before)

Like imagine you watched an anime for the first time without subtitles.

That's me.

I remember feeling so relieved at dismissal time when I saw my mom.

Also I think the bathroom thing is so annoying...

Asking to use the bathroom is always awkward as hell when I didn't have the word "bathroom" in my brain yet.

I remember in 3rd grade, some bitch teacher in science class didn't let me use the bathroom because she was teaching so I peed myself... yea...

School was kinda traumatic for me...

Literally the though of asking to use the bathroom sends shivers in my spine... it's so terrifying to ask since I always half-expect a "NO".

So yea... that's my story...

School always felt so weird.

It's exciting and simultaneously frightening.

NYC school had more of the excitement factor since there are a few Cantonese classmates that I just love to talk to, its the best part about being in school.

But also, I really wanna go home once I arrive at school. Always anticipating dismissal time.

Then my mom SIGNED ME UP FOR AFTERSCHOOL WITHOUT TELLING ME so I cried that first day of having afterschool in 2nd grade since I have no clue wtf is happening, I didn't even speak English.

I cried for an hour.

Then mom picked me up and was like "oopsie, sorry that I forgot to tell you"

Then those afterschool hours just extended from 3-4 to 3-6.

So dismissal is now at 6PM just so my mom can work longer hours.

So she treats this as free daycare.

I remeber feeling so alone there.

Kids get to go home at 2:45PM (? I think) and I have to say until 6PM sometimes 6:30PM when the sun is already going down.

Okay I think that's all I remember of early school years.

Realizing that a mirror shows different views to different people at the same time.
I think I learned a lot in kindergarten, but don't remember the other kids, or teacher, or classwork at all.

[–] psx_crab@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 days ago

I did a stage dance performance back when i was in kindergarten. i was shy, but still able to perform. I guess that help me a bit with stage fright later in my life.

[–] GreyShuck@feddit.uk 2 points 4 days ago
  • Losing a fight in the sandpit
  • Crying because there were no more trains in the trainset for me to have one. But then being given another whole set to play with
  • Farting extremely loudly in the middle of storytime
  • Miss not being able to tell me what dates Robin Hood lived in
  • Having a lesson on how to use a dictionary - which surprised me, since I already could, and didn't realise that anyone couldn't.
[–] 2piradians@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Brent had taken my place at the round activity table in kindergarten when I went to get something. So I turned around and butt-butted his butt. I got a stern talking to for that one.

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Preschool. Power going out but the fan still ran (inertia was unknown to preschoolers). Hitting the kid in the stomach that had stomach issues because he was tormenting me and knew we weren't allowed to hurt him. Not being allowed and being unable to are not the same thing. I got in trouble but he wasn't mean after that.

[–] theuniqueone@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 4 days ago

Remember the terror the first day of kindergarten don't remember why I was so afraid but the heightened emotions have maintained the vague memory.

[–] FinjaminPoach@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Lots of slides and getting into fights with other toddlers, lol.
