Oh, hot shit! I know about Movim, it's just not my main client (notifications are finnicky, and offline messages don't seem to work right for me?), but them adding discord-style rooms is great!

Even with people using more than they need we still overproduce by an alarming amount. Also someone wearing 5 shirts a day doesn't contribute that much to consumption, just extra laundry detergent, which is a resource that can be stockpiled for a long time.

There are a lot of ways that we do over consume, though many of them just... Do kind of go away when we're not run ragged constantly. Don't need to buy shinies to numb the pain when the pain is gone, y'know?

A lot of overconsumption is fueled by industries doing it on purpose, too, clothing being a prime example of that. Clothes used to last, but that's not as profitable as making things without enough seam allowance to alter them, and making them out of cloth so bad it falls apart if you even think of wearing it anyway.

Some of it is definitely personal choice, but I'd wager that most of it is down to the second one, with a runner-up being the first.

Not too far off of how a lot of AIs function, unfortunately

Oh, neat! Lemme check it ou-

Every time I die I drink a cup of tequila, and every 10 minutes I drink another

Well that seems irresponsible.

If you need cloud storage, Disroot.org has 2gb free, but... For this I think something like syncthing would work well, if you even need it in multiple places.

The download page for syncthing: https://syncthing.net/downloads/

Facebook messenger. I was afraid people wouldn't want to deal with using other chat apps, etc. DM'd everyone I knew with "Hey I'm leaving Facebook, I have XMPP, Signal, texting, and email, lemme know which one you want" and most people were fine giving me their phone number.

Turns out most people don't care.

Everyone needs at least one friend who's willing to break their own brain about tech, so they can host all the neat shit! Plus if everyone chips in it's pretty cheap

For all the alternatives out there truth is, none are really anywhere near perfect. Matrix and most of its clients while encrypted don’t offer true jump in /jump out game chat.

After complaining about it heavily for a few days, I did find one client that has that same feel, commet.chat. I haven't done a whole lot of testing yet, but from what I've seen/experienced, it's close, if not there

Personally I still prefer XMPP+Cheogram. It's more Signal than Discord, but it's a lightweight chat server with voice call abilities, and that's what I needed it for

You can't on Lemmy, but can on mbin. I saw someone else mention just post, which will work for it, but I also just have a second account on a microblogging fedi platform for that, and that's what I'd actually recommend for it. "You don't need multiple accounts on the fediverse" yada yards, but there are certain instances where it's helpful to have multiple, like this one xD

Yep, though with calibre in particular you want to kind of make sure it's locked down real good. People sniff for the ports it uses, so open calibre-web libraries get found quickly, and then will usually have some attempts at cracking.

I had mine set up as a local-only thing (could only access from my home WiFi), but from experiences with other apps that have similar crawlers, it takes about a week for them to be found. Just make sure everyone's passwords are decent, or just share one account if it's people you trust.

I need to look into calibre-web more. I definitely tried it, but I remember it being awkward. Might give it another go to see

Ahh, I somehow missed that, my bad. I'd never even heard of that one holy shit

I will be upfront with this, and say that I've never been a huge fan. But I did reinstall a Matrix server, and some clients to see if it'd gotten better in the year or so since I've last used it.

This just... Kind of feels like a more centralized XMPP with group chat folders that sort of function? The spaces feature is neat, but I've tried 4-5 clients, and every single one of those throws all of them into the same screen as the DMs by default, and I can't find a way to change that.

Am I missing something here? Like. I want to at least see what people like here, I just can't.

To be more specific, I have a friend who pointed out a couple of features that they wanted. They're present in Immich, but I'm wondering if they're replicable in Nextcloud since I already have that installed, and Immich is giving me trouble with installation. I'll troubleshoot Immich later if it can't be replicated

The features:

  • Having a world map that has pins on it based on location EXIF data in photos
  • Preferably a UI similar to google photos on mobile besides that

Edit: Someone in the comments pointed out that Memories (something I already installed) had come a long way. Ended up finding out there's a mobile app, and it is exactly these two things.

There are a lot of opinions I'll likely have until I die, but comparatively few that I'm willing to die for.

Vaguely talking about unsanitary topics

Not even just for the obvious gorey stuff. Saw a video going over a case where someone's entire gut stopped working, and one of the options presented was surgically removing the blockage. Made me realize it's not just the obvious gross stuff that comes up.

It seems like a weird point to bring up. How often do y'all convert your measurements? It's not even a daily thing. If I'm measuring something, I either do it in inches, or feet, rarely yards. I've never once had to convert feet into miles, and I can't imagine I'm unique in this. When I have needed to, it's usually converting down (I.e. 1/3 of a foot), which imperial does handle better in more cases.

Like. I don't care if we switch, I do mostly use metric personally, it just seems like a weird point to be the most common pro-metric argument when it's also the one I'm least convinced by due to how metric is based off of base 10 numbering, which has so many problems with it.

Edit: After reading/responding a lot in the comments, it does seem like there's a fundamental difference in how distance is viewed in metric/imperial countries. I can't quite put my finger on how, but it seems the difference is bigger than 1 mile = 1.6km
