It's going to fuck up Denmark's economy somewhat too. The two big breadwinners are Maersk and Novo Nordisk, and they get money in part from the US market. I don't know how tariffs on a shipping company would work though.
The official justification for why they can't fight back will be that if they distract American forces defending Greenland, then China will use the opportunity to invade Taiwan.
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Euros would rather be vassals to the U.S than cede any amount of respectability to China.

My money is still solidly on the EU only using their troops to surpress local protests against the Yanks, who will land in a big show of an "invasion" that will culminate in a flag planting photo op that may very kill us all from pure cringe.
It would be so incredible if the EU and US tore each other down through their interimperialist dick measuring. Unfortunately I just dont think Europe has the balls to fight back or stand up for itslef in any meaningful way before rolling over to tongue polish US boots again.
Maybe controversial, but I would honestly give critical support to European nations that want to free themselves from Washingtons influence and become truly independent.
That said, I dont think the political class in Europe has much of a spine, and the European continent is sadly, in all but name a vassal of the United States.
Most of the ruling class in Europe is so embedded in the US order that any change that occurs will never be of their accord or led by them.

I factored in ideology when I mentioned the capitalism. A more cogent analysis would be what @Awoo@hexbear.net presented in another thread
The US already occupies Greenland, Denmark is under the auspices of the broader American Empire, and any shipping control or resources extraction would heavily benefit American corporations or at least American oligarchs who own massive chunks of any European company that might benefit too.
Like materially the US already has all this already, but in a stable way that doesn't undermine the empire itself.
The truth has to be way more stupid and criminal, like he literally thinks adding a big chunk of map is prestigious and he's being egged on by orbiting grifters who see the opportunity to personally enrich themselves at the empire's expense.
Prior to his presidential campaign, Trump was best known for being the rich guy who put his name on everything. Of course he's not going to go along with a complex political status quo where Greenland is a de facto asset of the United States through corporate proxies and an unacknowledged vassal state. He wants America's name on it.

In Soviet North Cuba, after attempting annex other islands, the dictator would have the unilateral power to announce tariffs and other sanctions. This shows how weak and ineffective their "democraticly elected congress" was and is.
Everyone is waiting on the Supreme Court to issue their ruling on the legality of the tariffs. They'll find a way to kick the can down the road, or rule is such a way no one knows what the hell is going on and both sides claiming victory.
Ah yes, I completely forgot about the Supreme Court case that libs are pinning their hope on. I look forward to 'ol Donny wriggling his way out of yet another jam.
