Welcome to the News community!
Rules:
1. Be civil
Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.
2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.
Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.
3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.
Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.
4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.
Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.
5. Only recent news is allowed.
Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.
6. All posts must be news articles.
No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.
7. No duplicate posts.
If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.
8. Misinformation is prohibited.
Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.
9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.
All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.
10. Don't copy entire article in your post body
For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Back to office... Mass layoffs... Failing Healthcare system... Literal pedophiles in charge...
We are pitiful creatures.
Oof. When you paint it that way.... That's pretty bad 😅
It’s never a bad time to start masking and washing your hands!
apparently the vaccinated are faring a little better than the unvaccinated counterparts. who da thunk it?
It's not too late to get the flu vaccine, and it's free with nearly every insurance.
Well, it is common for the winter. Weekly stats don’t really say much. How it compares to previous years would show if these numbers are interesting.
I'm just going to copy over my comment from a different thread (all the below is that comment):
I was saying weeks ago that this was going to be a bad flu season in the US, because flu cases in China , Japan , Canada and the UK were all skyrocketing.
And three weeks ago WHO said
Although global activity remains within expected seasonal ranges, early increases and higher activity than typical at this time of year have been observed in some regions. [...] Since August 2025, there has been a rapid increase of [new variant] viruses detected from several countries
So even if you don't trust the CDC (and I would argue that you might not be able to trust the heads of CDC and FDA but most of the workers believe in their public health missions), it's well within plausibility that flu cases are skyrocketing across the US.
Thanks for the added information. I want to clarify, I wasn’t disputing anything posted or saying I didn’t trust; just that without annual context I wasn’t able to glean much actual trend information.
Sorry, I was tired when I pasted yesterday. The comment that I copied into my reply was in response to someone saying that they didn't trust the CDC and FDA flu warnings because they were all trumpian now; that part of my comment was directed at them and was included in the paste. I tried to indicate that when I said "all the below is my other comment" but I was tired and I guess I didn't indicate well enough. Sorry for the confusion.
Anecdotally, this has been an absolutely hellish season.
I've heard its pretty rough. Like, 35-40 year olds on ECMO rough.
We had quite the rough go of it in Japan. our area had whole schools closing. We got vaccinated and have fared well (so far, at least)
I got the vaccine as soon as it was available. A good friend procrastinated. We saw their little nephew together and hung out indoors one day. The nephew got the flu. My friend got the flu. I seem to be fine. My friend was bedridden for about a week.
They got their flu and COVID shots after they recovered, at least.
Measles is spreading through the US and Canada, btw
Can we not name this after the disease that kills 99% of humans in a Stephen King novel please? It feels like asking for trouble.
Captain Trips was the virus in The Stand
It had multiple nicknames, superflu was the main one.
Can confirm, family and I are sick.
It's not hitting me particularly bad, but the kids are sick too and that's a sleepless nightmare. Though, I'm probably worse than I realize since a sense of responsibility is kinda having me power through.
That's rough, and I definitely get where you're coming from. Hope you all recover quickly!
Lol. In America? Colour me fucking surprised.
