my poops can be, uh, powerful. i'm concerned they could be mistaken for smoke.

[–] yggstyle@lemmy.world 11 points 10 hours ago

... I feel like for a very specific group this is probably like getting an extra scoop of icecream when they only paid for one.

How is this man going to smoke while wearing a medical mask?

[–] aislopmukbang@sh.itjust.works 134 points 17 hours ago (6 children)

The glass uses a special technology that is normally opaque and cuts off the power in a few seconds after it detects smoke, making the glass transparent.

The shopping centres ensure that bathroom users are aware of the function with a notice on the door that says: “The glass will turn transparent if you smoke. Hold your urge to smoke if you do not want to become famous online.”

1: I am not a fan of it requiring power to be opaque. Lights flicker and suddenly we're all pooping with friends.

2: the power of shame is amazing

[–] curbstickle@anarchist.nexus 12 points 11 hours ago

The article isnt accurate unless this is a rather unique privacy glass, they are opaque and require the driver to go on to go clear. So in a power outage these fail to opaque. They also are opaque when they fully fail.

It's amazing how many people blindly put their faith in their tech stuff to never malfunction. It's getting harder and harder to find single purpose things that isn't stuffed with shitty smart features. Mf just let me buy a car that does not get bricked by a software update.

[–] LodeMike@lemmy.today 30 points 16 hours ago

The text is wrong this technology usually fails downwards to the opaque/blurred mode.

hope nobody ever gets literally exposed by a false positive. would be very annoying to be sitting there taking a shit when suddenly you're visible to everyone because some dust made a sensor freak out.

[–] ryannathans@aussie.zone 1 points 7 hours ago* (last edited 7 hours ago)

It's pretty hard to get a false positive on a pm2.5 sensor if that's what they are using, though spraying deodorant would do it

[–] klu9@piefed.social 0 points 15 hours ago

If you're pooping with friends, what's there to be ashamed of?

[–] ryven@lemmy.dbzer0.com 30 points 14 hours ago (2 children)

If so many people need a place to smoke, why not create a designated smoking area?

[–] krooklochurm@lemmy.ca 9 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

In Japan (Tokyo at least, idk about elsewhere)smoking is banned everywhere. Except designated smoking rooms. It's.... different.

[–] tigeruppercut@lemmy.zip 3 points 7 hours ago (1 children)

I don't think they've banned it in all the bars yet

[–] krooklochurm@lemmy.ca 3 points 7 hours ago

Yes, now that you mention it I do recall smoking bars in Tokyo.

[–] Scolding7300@lemmy.world 10 points 11 hours ago (2 children)

Because then it's still done. IIRC one of the industry's plays was to push for smoking areas as a compromise rather than have smoking eliminated/drastically reduced.

Not sure however what's the best way to accommodate those who are addicted

[–] MBech@feddit.dk 15 points 10 hours ago* (last edited 10 hours ago) (1 children)

I used to smoke a pack/day. Sure it sucks not getting to smoke for 10 hours, but it's seriously not like they're going to die. It doesn't hurt them, they just need to get their shit together and take a little bit of responsibilty for their dumb habbits. My view on this hasn't changed since I smoked.

Smokers can be some of the most inconsiderate, self centered douche bags in this world. I thought so too when I was a smoker. You know what sucks when you're dying for a smoke in an area where it's either prohibed, or just plain fucking rude? Smelling some douche nozzle's cigarette. It makes the need 10 times worse.

My solution is to not accomodate the addicts. They chose to smoke, they can choose to stop if they actually want to.

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 7 points 8 hours ago

As someone allergic to it, my main gripe is "Oh its not that noticeable!" And I'm like "But it IS, just because you have no sense of smell doesn't mean I don't!!" It reeks and makes me so nausea feeling.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

vapes, gum and patches seem like the best accommodation, but i'm not an expert.

[–] Scolding7300@lemmy.world 2 points 7 hours ago

I frankly don't want to do 2nd hand vaping either. Unfortunately a lot of unaware young adults got addicted to that

[–] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 43 points 15 hours ago

If you smoke enough you won't be able to see inside again.

[–] TaterTot@piefed.social 51 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

I feel like they might be overestimating the amount of fucks a person that smokes in a public bathroom gives.

[–] not_that_guy05@lemmy.world 2 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Not with that social point system, they ain't.

[–] kittenzrulz123@lemmy.dbzer0.com 6 points 10 hours ago

Do you even understand what the Chinese social credit system is?

[–] Canonical_Warlock@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 16 hours ago

So, loud as fuck smoke detectors don't get the job done?

[–] A_norny_mousse@feddit.org 11 points 16 hours ago

Totalitarianism is a harsh mistress.

[–] Aeao@lemmy.world 15 points 17 hours ago (1 children)

Why just men? Is it a mainly guy thing in china?

[–] gustofwind@lemmy.world 27 points 17 hours ago

Yep, few women smoke and around half of all men do

[–] Ghyste@sh.itjust.works 3 points 16 hours ago (1 children)

How is this even remotely onion-like?

[–] leftzero@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 11 hours ago (1 children)

The glass defaults to transparent.

Being a bathroom it should be the other way round, in case of power loss it should stay opaque.

It's oniony because no sane reasonable person would design it this way, unless they were intentionally being a terminal asshole. It looks like absurd humour.

[–] Ghyste@sh.itjust.works 3 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I get that and appreciate the explanation.

But at least to me this doesn't read as satirical in the least. Which has been a trend for awhile. Nottheonion has become politics2 because people are just posting anything. The comments reflect the same. I haven't seen anyone say "Oop, you got me" in months.

[–] leftzero@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 10 hours ago

I think it's more the other way round. Politics has become the Onion, and even gone well past it, while the Onion has stayed in the same place and accidentally become a serious news source.
