So which is it motherfuckers?! Am I poor because I spend money on coffee and avocado toast, or is it that I'm destroying the economy because I don't spend money on coffee and avocado toast?! You can't have fucking both!

[–] agentant@hexbear.net 3 points 5 hours ago

Can we just turn liberal economists into avocado toast?

Can't afford health insurance? Don't eat out. October 8, 2006 By Louise Norris

[–] segfault11@hexbear.net 7 points 2 days ago

20 years later most people can’t afford either

[–] Bolshechick@hexbear.net 41 points 2 days ago

Capitalists when justifying their spending: everyone should just act in their own self interests, and that actually produces the best outcomes for everyone!

Capitalists when the proles don't spend how they want: won't someone think of the economy????

[–] queermunist@lemmy.ml 73 points 2 days ago (2 children)

These are the same assholes that told us to save money and stop buying avocado toast.

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 34 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Came here to say this; I genuinely wish the entire left would never stop harping on about this; the right are more than happy to harp on about any nonsense they can and then turn it into a serious matter (like crying about DEI and turning it from a non-issue into one seriously discussed in government), so I wish every left or left adjacent content creator would point this out and never let it go.

[–] ClimateStalin@hexbear.net 19 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It should become a thought terminating cliche against right wingers, “Oh I bet you think you could buy a house with avocado toast money, shut the fuck up moron”

[–] infuziSporg@hexbear.net 9 points 2 days ago

Y'know what, that would be an interesting econometric. How many avocado toasts a house is worth. It would measure the relation between consumable and appreciable products, and possibly indicate how artificially inflated real estate prices are.

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 15 points 2 days ago

They're also the ones saying the poor must do with less so the rich who totally earned everything can have bank accounts go up

[–] hansolo@lemmy.today 51 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Supply and demand, bitches.

Restaurants supply overpriced, shit food, and there is no demand for it.

This headline isn't an economic anything. This is propaganda making you feel a way about your actions.

[–] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 30 points 2 days ago (1 children)

"oh, but if we lower prices then we couldn't afford rent"

so-you-agree so you agree the rent's too high? You're on our side?

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Funny enough, this was Henry George’s argument.

Landlords sit on their ass and do absolutely nothing but benefit from both labor and capital’s activities making land values go up. Landlording literally punishes success so he proposed a land value tax.

Of course, Karl Marx even addressed this as capitalist reformism but also admitted this would certainly be an improvement.

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Of course, Karl Marx even addressed this as capitalist reformism but also admitted this would certainly be an improvement

Add it to the absolutely MASSIVE pile of concessions we would gladly have and which would likely disperse most of the drive towards actual socialism (or radicalization that leads people to see its necessity) but which we'll never, ever get, because the bourgeoisie are such radical ideological extremists that they can brook no compromise

"Your New Lunch Habit Is Hurting The Economy"

Good.

does it more

[–] NephewAlphaBravo@hexbear.net 43 points 2 days ago

i will kill one economy every hour until my demands are met

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 14 points 2 days ago

The economy hurt me first.

If no jobs and labor is free so I still live in squalor even if I do get a job and all that is a “good economy”, then I want the economy to get worse.

[–] Philosoraptor@hexbear.net 21 points 2 days ago

If it bleeds, we can kill it.

[–] EatPotatoes@hexbear.net 30 points 2 days ago

Doesn’t help how compliant all the chains are in genocide.

[–] BodyBySisyphus@hexbear.net 45 points 2 days ago (2 children)

But not buying lunch is how I'm going to be able to afford a house. Pick a lane, darnit

Unironically the central bank is the only institution capable of unlimited spending, the coveted holy grail, but neoliberal economists cry too when there's deficit spending

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 13 points 2 days ago

you asking for more wage is the only cause of inflation

[–] Doubledee@hexbear.net 22 points 2 days ago

Yeah baffling, I was specifically lectured about not buying lunch at work to be thrifty. Just admit that we're in a slowdown.

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 40 points 2 days ago

"Hey, you! You! You! Guy eating the avocado toast!"

"Who... Me?... This is an open-faced sandwich and you need to get your eyes checked."

"The reason young people have no money is that they eat avocado toast!"

"Whatever."

"Hey, you! You! You! You! Look at me! Other guy! Guy with the paper bag!"

"What is your problem? And stop yelling."

"You got your lunch in there?"

"Not that it's any of your business but - yeah, I do."

"You're killing the lunch industry!"

[–] TheSpectreOfGay@hexbear.net 42 points 2 days ago

aw gee. i wonder why people aren't buying $20 lunch every single day. it's only like, what, 3 or so of their working hours devoted to mid food?

[–] Acute_Engles@hexbear.net 36 points 2 days ago

I WAS BUYING MY LUNCH EVERY DAY! I'M THE FUCKIN KEY MARKET FOR YOU FUCKERS! ADHD ADDLED LAZY CONSTRUCTION WORKER WHO MAKES A PRETTY OK WAGE CAN'T BUY THE FUCKING SLOP ANYMORE SO WHO THE FUCK ELSE IS GOING TO??????

[–] AF_R@hexbear.net 11 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Eating out for lunch never made sense to me from that start. It’s literally some relic of 1970s economic boom or something, when relative wages were high, relative prices were cheap, and there was no internet so you worked like an hour a day and spent the other 7 smoking and drinking.

Oh boy I would love to spend my hour of unpaid lunch letting work pile up, spending 15 minutes driving to a place, waiting 15 minutes to order/pay/receive food, driving 15 minutes back, and then having 15 minutes to eat, gaining like 1500 calories and spending an hours worth of pay plus gas and vehicle depreciation.

Like, no I’ll just eat a granola bar and work at my desk thanks.

[–] LeeeroooyJeeenkiiins@hexbear.net 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Weird how they don't suggest the new economy is hurting our lunch habits

[–] gayspacemarxist@hexbear.net 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Thankfully the night time street tacos are still affordable 😋 you can't stop us from feeding each other yummy cheap food ✊🏽

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 9 points 2 days ago (2 children)

porky-point: “Whoa there, did I just catch a poor ENJOYING SOMETHING!?!? Street tacos, eh? How chic! They’re rich people food now! How dare something exist without it being gentrified into a status symbol?”

[–] gayspacemarxist@hexbear.net 2 points 11 hours ago

This is why u hate us white boy. Steal all you want, but we'll still make better food. For us this is about love. We can make culture out of whatever trash you force us to subsist on. Your pathetic little board room can only plunder what we already made.

How dare something exist without it being gentrified into a status symbol?

I recently observed fun phenomenon of seafood losing its place in public spaces as rich and celebrity food in Poland, because it prices went down. Instead are now adding drastic amounts of rabbit food and olive oil to literally everything.

Less fun is that food prices generally went much up.

[–] TheFermentalist@reddthat.com 32 points 2 days ago

Pay me what I am fucking worth and I will think about buying lunch every day.

Well, I won’t buy it, but I’ll think about it

[–] barrbaric@hexbear.net 16 points 2 days ago

Pay me more you porky motherfuckers.

PAY

US

MORE

[–] adultswim_antifa@hexbear.net 12 points 2 days ago

I shall do it more then.

[–] daniyeg@hexbear.net 18 points 2 days ago

glad to see having lunch outside in the US is also becoming as unaffordable as it is here.

[–] Bobson_Dugnutt@hexbear.net 21 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Maybe if fucking McDonald's didn't cost $10 I'd eat out more

JFC Chipotle is like $20

Also driving to the nearest fast-food place takes like 20 minutes out of my 30 minute lunch break, that's time I could be watching cute cat videos or reading theory (Garfield comics)

Under socialism the response would be "Wow that's great, it means workers can do other stuff instead or work less hours"

I need to make a post about Pelmennaya, a type of canteen in the USSR specialized in dumplings...

I stopped eating lunch just to stick it to the capitalists. sicko-satan

[–] DragonBallZinn@hexbear.net 8 points 2 days ago

Cool. Hey porks.

Your refusal to hire me and many other folks AND the fact you want us all to work for free is hurting the economy. You don’t see us pestering you about it.

(Because we are forced to). We respect you rich folk’s parsimony. How about you respect our’s? Want money? Go bother your fellow pork.
