"Confidence" is the funniest fucking way to frame this. Yes, people are gonna spend less on the holidays cuz they're abstractly less confident about the economy, not cuz people have less money or need to spend more of their money on food and rent or anything like that.

I had someone tell me that the economy was doing fine and that it was because of Trump, but at the same time acknowledged the tariffs were hurting industries like construction. I've also watched this individual pull out a calculator to add 80 to 120, so I assume they just believe whatever they see on the news.

$-229, it's in absolute dollar amounts not -229%.

so the $185 drop in 2008 is closer to $300 adjusted for inflation, although both are about a 24% drop in estimated holiday spending from the month before.
