From the makers of the unwinnable jungle war and it’s unasked-for sequel, the unwinnable mountain war comes the brand new unwinnable jungle-mountain war.

a ground invasion will be the worst boondoggle since vietnam if not even worse

Ground invasion is out of the question, a couple weeks of aerial bombardment, most likely

Chance of actually overthrowing Maduro, 0%

We said the same thing about Ukraine back in the day. It seems to me as though the people in charge are incredibly arrogant about what they can get away with. It's not like popularity or approval rating seems to matter a whole lot to them right now

Ukraine didn't require a massive amphibious operation, neither did Iraq for that matter, we can't compare apples and the equivalent of a prickly cactus, the geography of Venezuela is a deathtrap for ground forces coming in from the coast, without the Colombian border route open, the US has no chance of a viable ground based assault

Ukraine is flatter than me on Estrogen. It's incredibly easy to just roll on in there.

Venezuela is incredibly mountainous, including its coastline. Even an amphibious landing would be very difficult.

Its a lot of tall mountains, and narrow river valleys. The white guy who named it, called it Venezuela because it reminded him of Venice, Italy.

"Incredibly easy" is a bit of an overstatement, iirc Ukraine is muddy as hell in a lot of places, like Siberia.

Didn't the oil fields of America's vassals in the Middle East originally belong to the UK or America as well? I wonder how they're handling this excuse; if perhaps they're making the same mistake of 'Oh America would NEVER invade US! We're their SPECIAL friends!'

[–] footfaults@lemmygrad.ml 15 points 1 month ago

In Iran it was British Petroleum. Yes you are correct

If I take the time to call someone out I should really take the time to make sure it's right, but thanks for being chiller than me

[–] Evilsandwichman@hexbear.net 7 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Wait I'm confused, what did they mean instead?

[–] KuroXppi@hexbear.net 11 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (2 children)

You can click on this button on any comment to be taken to the instance of that comments' author. There you can see words that get caught up in our slur filter as well as comments from defederated instances (in the case the post itself is from another lemmy thingy).

edit: The modlog is also open to the public, if you're interested in seeing removed comments and the like

[–] BelieveRevolt@hexbear.net 5 points 1 month ago

Most Lemmy instances seem to have a far more lenient slur filter than us, the C-word isn't filtered and far more shockingly m****loid doesn't seem to be filtered by other instances either what-the-hell

[–] TheSovietOnion@hexbear.net 9 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Wow, english is my second language and I genuinely had no idea this word is a slur

[–] PorkrollPosadist@hexbear.net 12 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It is regional. From my understanding in Australia it is almost a term of endearment, but in the US it is very much perceived as a gendered slur.

I thought the removed word was the ableist "r-word".

Does this mean we're in the avatar timeline?
