One of the most iconic bbq joints in one of the biggest bbq towns (Joe's KC, formerly known as Oklahoma Joe's) started in the back of a gas station and it's still there today

It was years ago, but I've eaten at one of the major truck stop brands (Flying J) and it was higher level than any brand restaurant as far as service and what they offered.

Former street trash hitchhiker here, Flying J is the absolute bomb. They're old-school nice for their trucker clientele with some of the fastest, cheapest, flavoriest, deep-friedest food around.

Flying J, Buckee’s, Love’s, and the like are genuinely good. Those truckers would take their business elsewhere if they weren’t.

If you meant Buc-ee’s, they actually don’t allow semis on their parking lots, which basically means no truckers.

I’m not sure where you’re referring to. The ones I saw did allow big rigs.

Most truck stops I remember weren’t just one thing in the middle of nowhere, but rather a small collection of shops and restaurants surrounding a giant gas station and overnight parking built for truckers.

That’s how Michelin started.

[–] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 7 points 9 hours ago

This ranking just means that people left a lot of positive reviews. So it's a nice place by gas station standards. That doesn't mean it's better than an actual restaurant.

If this is Birmingham, AL - I have to share that it has an incredible food scene.

If it’s England, they have Michelin star restaurants

[–] bandwidthcrisis@lemmy.world 1 points 15 seconds ago

This is a Shell station. Michelin would be for the tires.

(Joke: I know the origin of Michelin ratings.)

They invented the balti curry

There are some killer restaurants in gas stations where I live. Some of the best Thai food I have ever had comes from a shell station. It is just a couple of older Thai lady's in a tiny kitchen serving up amazing togo food from the back of a gas station, and there is always a line.

There was/is a cluster of roadside services in a place named Tebay in the north of England that was consistently highly rated for artisanal food, to the point that people would go there as a destination rather than just stopping if it’s on the way. Not sure if this is still the case.
