Forgetting the "having your grift book bought in bulk and shipped to landfills by your political benefactors" step of becoming a bestseller is kind of a silly mistake tbh

[–] miz@hexbear.net 37 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

it's like a microcosm of the thing where the next generation falls wholesale for the bullshit knowingly promoted by the previous stewards of empire. they think the bought-and-paid-for superstructure is the natural order not a carefully managed façade

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 6 points 13 hours ago

I fully believe that's what's happening here.

[–] blipblip@hexbear.net 20 points 19 hours ago

Fetterman just did the same thing iirc.

Rebrand it as smut with the cover being rfk with plagas mutation bursting out of his head longingly gazing into her eyes. Instant hit

A Bluesky comment

I can’t believe it flopped. I thought everyone was dying for a badly written account of what it’s like to have phone sex with a spoon stuck in a garbage disposal.

Yeah I can't imagine many people are hard up to read about Worm Man wanting to cum dump, go figure!

[–] segfault11@hexbear.net 12 points 17 hours ago

who need they nuzzi read

[–] purpleworm@hexbear.net 35 points 21 hours ago

Imagine sexting Nurgle to sell 1,200 copies.

This is honestly a bit more sign of the times than the news, in a way. This kind of peripheral failure of these old media tentpoles like “doing a book tour” and shit is a bigger sign of the eroded/shifted media landscape and the baffling throes of the empire in decline

Nuzzi’s book compares in first week sales to those like John Fetterman's "Unfettered" (2,600 copies in its first week) and Michael Wolff's "All or Nothing: How Trump Recaptured America" (3,000 copies), both of which were largely considered busts.

Political books have never really sold well, all those NYTimes best sellers are manipulated anyways. Publishers order thousands of copies to pump up sales numbers. The people in charge now are so incompetent they forgot to buy their own books to make themselves look good.

That's gotta be it, right? Are they so high on their own supply they've forgotten how to grift?

[–] LaBellaLotta@hexbear.net 16 points 20 hours ago

Ikr and those are truly humiliating #’s it’s wild they didn’t juice them more

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 7 points 19 hours ago

Maybe nobody told her.

[–] LaBellaLotta@hexbear.net 20 points 20 hours ago (1 children)

Ooof doing WORSE than “unfettered” is BRUTAL

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 17 points 20 hours ago

Also - Fetterman is just a ginormous lump. Nuzzi was being marketed much more like a movie star than a reporter/writer. Nuzzi had at least two articles with loads of glamour photos. Typically that level of hyper PR creates its own buzz. But the public wasn't interested at all.

A Bluesky comment

Not many people read American Canto but everyone who did started a substack.

[–] BodyBySisyphus@hexbear.net 11 points 19 hours ago (1 children)

Publishing all those excerpts probably had the opposite of the desired impact.

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 10 points 18 hours ago (1 children)

A guy on Bluesky went gaga. He had a huge excerpt thread. I tried to read it but Bluesky is even worse than Twitter for long threads. I know a blog post is super-uncool but good grief - make one for that shit. Nobody wants to read a micro blogging thread that's even worse than Twitter. After 3 or 4 posts it's too annoying.

Somebody else but I can't find the post. Bluesky intentionally makes it super-hard to find anything in your browser history.

All 1200 copies purchased to make fun of her
