“ACAB!” I scream at the park ranger who’s trying to stop me from piling rocks up on a hiking trail

[–] micnd90@hexbear.net 34 points 1 day ago

I don't think we have NPS patrolling the trails just to catch rogue hikers, we don't have the authority to arrest people. Anyone who paid the entrance fee is free to ruin the hiking trails, then people like me who does maintenance will just have to clean it up.

I worked for state parks, and let me tell you, having my boss ask me for my time sheets while wearing bullet proof armor is surreal.

The Fed is a bank. You joined the fedS, plural

Everyone cyclically joins the fed after each meal

Being a ranger in a place like Rocky Mountain National Park is one of those jobs that I could do for 30 years without getting bored. It's a shame the jobs are so wildly competitive that it takes several years of volunteering to be considered.

Yes, I just learned that one of the things ranger does after overnight snowfall is just to hike the trails first thing in the morning and leave footprints, because the hiking trails might be covered up and not as obvious for tourists.

Thank you for your service, fellow Fed infiltrator

[–] Shaleesh@hexbear.net 12 points 1 day ago

Do the volunteers also get gear discounts the way contractors and employees do? My [REDACTED] who works for [REDACTED] at [REDACTED] National Park gets like 60% off boots at this one place.

same but for NWS except everything has now been privatized (even the spotter network) and i had to buy my own shirt

[–] WhatDoYouMeanPodcast@hexbear.net 13 points 1 day ago (1 children)

wait, I love that colorful shirt behind it. How can I appropriate your style?

[–] micnd90@hexbear.net 18 points 1 day ago

That is a Filson (TM) - it is a really overpriced brand for outdoor workers and status symbol for dumb people in rural areas. I got mine at a thrift store in an upscale Colorado ski town.

[–] Lussy@hexbear.net 11 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Congratulations, that’s an incredible job.

Here’s to the fallen workers who were fucked over by the Trump admin to make way for you

I did make sure that I'm not scabbing. I'm taking a paid seasonal volunteer job that has always been around.

this sounds kinda like a dream job tbh. way to go

[–] mickey@hexbear.net 3 points 1 day ago

Very cool. I need to start looking for new employment soon and I'd be interested in something like this but was discouraged by reading about persistent budget cuts and decay by neglect in federal agencies, and that's prior to the current year's fuckery. But your finding this and good words from other folks in this thread will make me reconsider.
