Theaters can survive... but they'll need to change.

Fuck off with the pre-roll ads. Abusing a captive audience that literally paid to be there was a shitty move in the first place, but now that people have the easy option of staying home, it's not something that can be afforded any longer.
Fewer screens. The multiplex isn't the future. Movie houses with 1-3 screens will be the ones to survive.
Accommodate breaks. Construct auditoriums that allow people to get a toilet break without missing the show -- integrate bathrooms into auditoriums, innovate with quiet/silent plumbing & ventilation, and pump the movie audio into the bathrooms. Controversial take: experiment with inserting intermissions.
Lean heavily into multi-use. Theater owners should strive to integrate live sports, television premieres & finales and live performances (drama, music, etc) into their venue's event calendar.

One of the biggest reasons I don't like going to movies in the US is the lack of intermission. I just don't get it. Broadway shows? Intermission. Live music? Intermission (or, at least, breaks between sets). 3 hour movies? Come on now masochism cadets, let's see how excruciating this film can be!

Like, I know it's been normalized here, but I have no idea why.

Met a guy running a smalltown theater yesterday. It seems to be going well for him. But he has to work around studio policies on new releases that are sometimes cost prohibitive to screening on opening day with only one screen.

Yeah, I can think of a hundred reasons why that would be a bad idea. Then again, I'm really tired of these 2.5+ hr movies with no break.

The intermission during The Brutalist was such a treat.

I always like to drink a few beers at the movies, and 3 hours is too long to wait for the toilet. Anything over 90 minutes I'm in favour of intermission.

Yes but the alternatives were Larry Ellison, who owns Oracle and wants to surveil people with AI, his son, who owns SkyDance/Paramount already, and Comcast.

It’s not great, but I am not convinced this was the worst outcome.

Netflix brought in the meta of slop content that took the industry by storm. None of this slop catches my attention, so go ahead. I won't consume this crap regardless of who makes it. The greed of it all shows in the finished product, which is all it is to them, a product. Art has been sold out for a quick buck.
