Immigrant pops are seriously the one thing keeping some poor neighborhoods worth living in. In my hometown, we used to have huge food deserts. Then asian grocers started setting up shop with beyond reasonable prices, and even though their American brand slop selection was barebones, all you really needed was a cookbook and some daring and you could figure out how to use the new ingredients. Same has gone for restaurants for much longer than that too.

Then, because fewer people have cars in poor neighborhoods, smaller grocers get by on the foot traffic, and suddenly you have walkable neighborhoods.

In general I feel like people have been downright eager to abandon fast food. Used to be there was no better way to max calories per dollar than fast food, but now you really are just better splitting the giant burrito and keeping the other half for lunch tomorrow. Keeps better in the fridge too than anything that lists grease as the second ingredient too

“Go away, poors! Slop is a rich people thing now!”

“Wait, why aren’t rich people buying proleslop? Wait, poors, where are you going? Don’t you have to eat proleslop?”

Hey now they are trying for the record of biggest bank account

So there's two things going on here.

One, is you can still get cheap food at McDiddy's IF you use a bunch of online coupons from either the McDiddy's app or other food ordering sites so stoners getting delivery still buy it while allowing the company to try and charge out the ass for walk in customers, because corpos want everyone to do fucking everything on the app now.

Two, McDiddy's actually make most of their money from real estate speculation, the burger joint is really just a tax payer, so they've been trying to squeeze their customers on the burgers and for a while didn't care that much it was causing declining sales cuz they were still making bank on the real estate. Now they over played their hand and the burger shacks aren't making enough to even cover the taxes now, but once corpos have decides that their shitty burger is worth $15 they have a hard time justifying dropping it back down to the shareholders.

The app deals have mostly dried up. I’m the kind of weirdo who tracks deals for literally everything in my life and honestly all the fast food app deals have largely disappeared.

Which is fine, fast food is generally shit (gonna give some props to stuff like chipotle that actually will give you some decent nutrition). I think what’s sad is workers struggling with multiple jobs/gig work legitimately being low on time and needing easy food options and fast food is just too expensive to justify now.

Yeah during early lockdown I went through a "drunk with a shitty kitchen" phase where I ordered pickup and delivery WAY too much, and there were a lot of surprisingly good deals on the apps. Like I could get a 3 course thai meal or a whole ass good pizza with fancy topping for a steal, then get drunk and eat it and play Rimworld for 6 hours.

I also gained a lot of weight and developed really bad hypertension and sleep apnea. Thankfully I eat out less, have a CPAP and have lost like 50 pounds since then.

[–] alexei_1917@hexbear.net 14 points 4 months ago

Yep. Easy shitty food and losing hours of time to Rimworld is absolutely a thing I've done far too often.

there's a thai takeout place that's walkable to me that has the absolute best deal in town. just incredible food with fresh veg in exciting curries. tiny menu, but rotates. all under $13. it's a two person operation in a tiny place doing constant business through a door window. it's everybody's favorite. go there enough and you see everybody, eventually.

even among the places that aren't trying to fleece their customers by overcharging for cheap slop, too many joints try to be everything to everyone and end up with crazy overhead from infrastructure needed to support the complexity. it's like everywhere got the walmart brain worm and wants to be the one-stop-shop for whatever customer experience. like what kind of pervert goes to burger king for a milk shake, or starbucks for a brownie and a CD? those people are not a demographic to cater to, they are a pathology to be avoided. just do the thing that people think of when they think of your place, and do it with total focus. don't try to be The Cheesecake Factory with the 26 page menu, that place is an affront to god.

more places should just do a tiny menu, dovetail as much of the prep as possible, and work on perfecting the processes. people will become adventurous if everything you make is badass.

Avoid places with big menus like the plague. There is no way it can all possibly be fresh and skillfully prepared.

[–] into_highest_invite@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 4 months ago

i have never gone to a burger king and expected not to be able to order a milkshake tbh

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 20 points 4 months ago (4 children)

$40 for 2 people gets you the fattest most excellent street tacos with 2 of the cane sugar cokes near me. So good!

[–] Dessa@hexbear.net 20 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Get the Jarritos instead. Coke is on the BDS list

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 3 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Fair! My impulses have more control over my brain then I like. I'll do that next time.

[–] thelastaxolotl@hexbear.net 2 points 4 months ago

Jaritos Tamarindo and Piña are the best ones in my opinion

[–] SuperZutsuki@hexbear.net 20 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago) (1 children)

You'd better be getting like 6 tacos per person for that price. Fuck, that's expensive

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 14 points 4 months ago

Each taco is so full it might as well be 2 tacos.

[–] Omegamint@hexbear.net 9 points 4 months ago

Shoutout to angels in Los Angeles shit is fuego and if any of you ever come and you are a filthy evil carnist then you must try

[–] SoyViking@hexbear.net 7 points 4 months ago

In Denmark a McDonald's combo meal will easily cost you 16 dollars. The workers there have a union contract. I eat way too much of that garbage but only because it is convenient and my partner and children are heathens who actually like it.

When the company pays for lunch at work I usually get a fancy Turkish pita with pieces of real beef, tzatziki, picked cabbage, chilis, the works with a soda and fries on the side. It costs tickles the same greasy slop spot that McDonald's do but it is so much more delicious and you don't feel greasy and violated afterwards. It costs 19 dollars. You really gets something for that markup.

How the c-suite will read this: we need to force our employees to pretend they work in a sit-down restaurant. also, give customers a packet of taco seasoning to sprinkle on their fries for that authentic ethnic experience.

[–] ConcreteHalloween@hexbear.net 22 points 4 months ago (1 children)

It's more c-suite has been jacking up the prices on everything to please the shareholders but now that they've over done it and it's hurting them, the shareholders don't want to hear they need to drop the prices back down and instead insist c-suite needs to do some new fancy add campaign or something.

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 14 points 4 months ago

Most of which seem pickle based lately.

[–] ComradePupIvy@lemmygrad.ml 14 points 4 months ago (1 children)

Dont forget making the fast food staff tipped employees too

[–] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 15 points 4 months ago

They work harder than I do and im a sous chef a nice sit down place. Kitchen gets tipped out where I am. Ill keep tipping until wages are better for them. This is in theory cause I cant recall the last time I got fast food. Im not above it from a culinary or health standpoint, im just vegan.
