Let's circle back to the talk about 'safety' once we go over these fantastic new AI features we're implementing

Dear CEOs: please get some additional CEO training so you don’t pivot into CEO mode when certain subjects come up.

We’re looking for ways to leverage the synergy presented by adults using our platform to solicit 12 year olds.

It’s only fair that they should represent an opportunity for Roblox after all the opportunities Roblox has provided them.

Oh god the whole interview's more awkward than I thought. Besides, ofc, the AI incorporation

Here's a sample

Roose: Last year, activist fund and short seller Hindenburg Research came out with a report arguing, among other things, that Roblox was, “compromising child safety in order to report growth to investors.” One of the things they pointed to was that there had been a decline in your spending on trust and safety. You have denied that. Why? What did they have wrong?

Baszucki: Fun. Let’s keep going down this. And so, first off, Hindenburg is no longer in existence, correct? So, you should report on that. They went out of business for some reason. The other thing is, have you researched that information? Roose: Um ——

Smug ass ad profitum :kelly:

Baszucki: Because you’re asking me about this, I’m curious if you’ve done your own research.

Roose: I have, I have done some research about ——

Baszucki: And what’s your take on that?

Roose: Well, I’m asking you.

Baszucki: So it’s really interesting, because I think we’re diving into a situation where we’re getting better, better, better. But would you ask the same situation of someone who converted from maybe hypermanual labor making cars by hand to an assembly line? The assembly line might be infinitely better and at the same time not have so many people. So, I think what they’re referring to is moving more and more and more and more to A.I. Arguably, is it better to have A.I. systems reviewing every image, every piece of text, all of that, or to keep doing that manually? So I think that was a misnomer. And I think if you interview anyone in our safety team or safety systems, that would be just part of making our systems better.

Ah yes, cuz getting a US-based immature AI that confuses A with B is certainly comparable to a more controllable automation of industry a la PRC quality.

I love when they use automation as an example of 'Intelligence', especially for LLMs, which are notoriously bad at giving the same answer to the same prompt 1000 times in a row.

In a just world, Roblox would be taken down and the people responsible for it either jailed or hung upside in the town square for people to punch them to death. But considering we're being ruled by psychopaths and literal pedophiles, nothing will happen.

Did you know that the Chinese word for 'child predator' is the same as the word for 'creeper whale'?

I guess I don’t understand the outrage here. Roblox said it IS a problem but also an opportunity to learn how to make the platform more secure while allowing kids to communicate and build communities.

I see it as my responsibility to make sure my kids aren’t getting into trouble. It’s great if Roblox helps, but Roblox security doesn’t guard against sex pests on the street or other games/platforms. In recent news, filing a report about misconduct after the fact is just a parent saying “I wasn’t watching my kid, why didn’t Roblox stop this?” Childish blame games and zero responsibility as a parent.

In my kid’s friends group, at least one parent is always on the group call and all the parents are very active in teaching our kids how scams, predators, and bullies work.

If the kids don’t want us around or try to hide, they’re up to something no good and will lose their internet time. If I don’t have time to watch them, I engage other parents to help. If they can’t help, my kids aren’t allowed on Roblox.

Let's see

  • allow kids to build

free labor in Roblox content mines

  • allow kids to network

children serve as guinea pigs for social research

  • opportunity to research how to protect kids

kids serve as guinea pigs in an environment with pedophiles

I see it as my responsibility to make sure my kids aren't getting into trouble.

Great. Now what about kids with shitty parents who find comfort in hanging out with their friends from school in Roblox where they can play digital Legos? You know, the kind of children who don't have responsible adults in their lives and are the primary targets of online predators?

Yes, it's parents' responsibility to protect their kids. But we don't live in a world where only good parents exist and there are no bad parents. You can't just say "Fuck 'em they should have chosen better parents," and shift liability away from the company who knows it has a problem.

[–] TheAsianDonKnots@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Kids having shitty parents is not Roblox responsibility or something they can protect kids from. It’s not shifting liability, it’s a problem in all social activities. Before the internet, Father Dale Fushek was molesting kids at Young Life and those same shitty parents and cops turned a blind eye to a “pillar of the community” until 2005. That piece of shit is still free to this day and only faced civil lawsuits while the church moves him around.

Roblox can help with chat filters and complaints, that’s it. Your kid has a better chance of being molested in the real world by someone they already know or trust. Blaming Roblox is a distraction. BBN, AIM, Craigslist, Discord… I’m old enough to see people blame whatever’s popular at the time.

Reminder there is no reddit gold here

"opportunity" is just what corporate freaks call a problem. the meaning is identical. you're reading way too much into this

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 8 points 2 months ago

The way it's phrased in response to that question is a pretty big gotcha but yeah not really that wrong otherwise. Still ethics of Roblox are pretty questionable.
