Dumb? The sea seagulls maybe, but the ones moving inland are definitely not. Here in The Netherlands there's an evolutionary difference in growth and cognitive behavior noticeable, as the inland seagulls are able to get much more food. The food is also more diverse and contains more fats. Because the food they eat is our trash, they are also exposed to many fungi and bacteria improving their immune system. To be able to get to our trash they need to open containers and reach into difficult places, improving their cognitive skills. There is a big difference noticeable with seagulls who stay at sea, as they rely on just fish which is harder to get as thanks to us the fish population is greatly reduced. Sea seagulls are often under fed and get ill more often and die due to poisoning (like lead from ships which ends up in the fish they eat). They are doing bad these days, which is what forced groups to find food elsewhere, like in the cities.

And now they are plotting to take control over humans after ages of control by cats. I've seen them and my cats hoarding machine guns, grenades and rocket launchers.

I tried to find the article I read a while ago (was in Dutch) but can't seem to find it. Here's a similar article though: https://phys.org/news/2016-07-biologist-evolutionary-brought-seagulls-ocean.pdf

Hahaha holy shit

[–] RecursiveParadox@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

The entire population of Greater Haarlem would like a word about this.

[–] logicbomb@lemmy.world 45 points 4 days ago

A seagull alone may be dumb and have very little memory of the past, but I am sure that A Flock of Seagulls can remember all the way back to the 1980s.

We have generic tests for the intelligence of birds.

Most famously used on Crows/Parrots, Seagulls are smarter than average and can solve some advanced puzzles, but they're mostly below Corvids or Parrots. We've also tested their memory, they only care about food and can remember places they've gotten food and even the faces of people who they've got food from year to year, but we don't think over too much longer periods.

[–] partofthevoice@lemmy.zip 17 points 4 days ago (1 children)

but we don’t think over too much longer

Are… are you a seagull?

[–] Dr_Vindaloo@lemmy.ml 14 points 4 days ago

...they only care about food...

Apparently I am

[–] musubibreakfast@lemmy.world 8 points 3 days ago

They're loud, only care about food, they can remember places they've gotten food and are obsessed with those places. Seagulls basically as intelligent as New Yorkers.

[–] Adderbox76@lemmy.ca 15 points 4 days ago (2 children)

If a seagull lives to it's thirties I imagine it's flying around with nothing but Smashmouth banging around it's brain all day.

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 days ago
[–] Hadriscus@jlai.lu 3 points 4 days ago

or the song lo gabian (the seagull)

[–] Grimy@lemmy.world 20 points 4 days ago (1 children)

I barely remember last week.

[–] halvar@lemy.lol 14 points 4 days ago

maybe you're a seagull, you should check that with your gp

Count them.

[–] snooggums@piefed.world 2 points 4 days ago

FIRE IT UP! FIRE IT UP!

[–] deacon@lemmy.world 16 points 4 days ago

I know a lot of dumb people that think they remember the 90s, and that statement doesn’t exclude myself.

[–] Kamsaa@lemmy.world 15 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Herring gulls are smart, they know if you are looking at them (and usually avoid stealing your food when you do) ^^ Herring gulls respond to human gaze direction | Biology Letters https://share.google/Sdg1k9aoyRVzoiiSi

And have in fact stolen my broodje haring straight out of my fucking hands as I raised it to my mouth to take the first bite. Fucker hit me from behind and curved in at the last second. Zandvoort Summer 2010. Never forget, never forgive!

[–] Kamsaa@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Thanks! I should've done that directly, apologies.

[–] lmmarsano@lemmynsfw.com 6 points 4 days ago (2 children)

These guys are brilliant. Just look at them

[–] Credibly_Human@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

I mean, if being able to steal and swindle frequently and successfully is a mark of high intelligence, trump might be a stable genius.

[–] fossilesque@mander.xyz 2 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I think they are made of feathers and malice.

[–] stray@pawb.social 11 points 4 days ago

I can't relate to being disturbed by the idea that other creatures remember their own lives.

[–] Kolanaki@pawb.social 8 points 4 days ago (1 children)

There's a whole Flock of Seagulls that's been around since the 80s!

[–] bstix@feddit.dk 4 points 4 days ago

Are they still around? I heard they ran away. They ran so far away.

[–] humanspiral@lemmy.ca 1 points 3 days ago

so how did that dumb fuck steel your hot dog???? Damn right we remember the 90s, and it's still hammer time. Can't touch yo hot dog. sideways shuffle time

[–] MedicPigBabySaver@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago (2 children)

Well, there aren't any actual "seagulls". There are different types of gulls. And some seem more intelligent than others.

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 1 points 3 days ago (1 children)

How can seagulls be real if our eyes are not real?

[–] MedicPigBabySaver@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Well, birds aren't real... So, it negates the whole seagull debate anyway.

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago (3 children)

Are you telling me if I live by the sea, these gulls I see are not seagulls?

[–] psud@aussie.zone 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

We have seagulls in my inland city, they breed on an island in our lake. I think the name for our seagulls are silver gulls, famous from the film finding Nemo

[–] L7HM77@sh.itjust.works 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Sometimes they live in bays, then they're called bagels.

[–] LemmyKnowsBest@lemmy.world 1 points 3 days ago

Yum! I can haz strawberry cream cheese bay gulls?

[–] MedicPigBabySaver@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago

Technically, correct. They are different types of gulls.

Most popular type is the: Herring Gull.

[–] Zerush@lemmy.ml 1 points 4 days ago (1 children)

Stupidity is this what us made different from animals

[–] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 0 points 3 days ago

Can you try that again, without having a stroke?
