If they lived for more than a few years I'd be amenable to it.

I've seen quite a few reports of them living for like 10 years as pets.

Possums make good pets actually. They are already very cuddly and sweet and don't carry most diseases we humans need to worry about.

Some people say they can live a pretty good lifespan but in reality you should only expect 5-6 years tops.

@Dort_Owl@hexbear.net do you have a nice barn or something to protect yourself from the elements? Or a hole in a tree?

[–] Rom@hexbear.net 24 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Or a nice hole in the dirt?

So domesticating dogs was for protection and hunting and they like our scraps, cats were for the rats, what the racoon doing?

[–] simpletailor@hexbear.net 36 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Raccoons will sort through your trash so you don't have to compost, saving you precious seconds of your life.

Welp, I'm in. I'll play god to a sentient creature for that alone

Domestication isn't necessarily an objectively symbiotic affair. Pets are already a much more commensal thing tha they were.

I might argue Raccoons may just be parasitising on us by overflooding our dopamine receptors with cuteness. I think animals all over the world are slowly doing it.

And I'm not complaining.

[–] ShimmeringKoi@hexbear.net 12 points 1 week ago

But if we get our dopamine receptors juiced from the deal, surely that makes them symbiotes

[–] came_apart_at_Kmart@hexbear.net 21 points 1 week ago

domesticating humans so that we allow them access to our magnificent garbage.

[–] blunder@hexbear.net 27 points 1 week ago

Raccoons are really funny and cute lil guys

I don't need something as smart as a raccoon in my house. Get up at 3 AM for a snack and Rigby is digging around in the fridge, no thank you

It's his fridge now, get used to it.
