I do find it pretty metal that these Eldritch abominations that come from a poisonous plant are some of the tastiest things on Earth.

[-] hunter2@sh.itjust.works 59 points 7 months ago

It tried to kill us, but it failed. Was humankind metal all along?

[-] chatokun@lemmy.dbzer0.com 9 points 7 months ago

Humans are space orca. Don't think it caught on here as much yet compared to reddit.

[-] shikogo@pawb.social 4 points 7 months ago

I think you meant to say space orcs but orcas is pretty funny too.

This is the first time I've wanted potatoes mashed but not because I'm hungry...

[-] Omgarm@lemmy.world 23 points 7 months ago

Vanquished potatoes sound tasty.

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

Revenge is a baked potato best served cold.

Mac wants the flamethrower!

Just found out today if they start to sprout even a little you shouldn't eat them?

[-] therandoe@kbin.social 77 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

NO, that's not right. If they turn green you shouldn't eat them. If they sprout in darkness, so the sprouts are white, just pluck the sprouts off and peel like normal.

Just don't eat green potatoes.

[-] Micromot@feddit.de 20 points 7 months ago

Potatoes being green is also unrelated to them sprouting it just happens when they get too much sunlight while growing

[-] therandoe@kbin.social 8 points 7 months ago

I've had potatoes in my fridge go green. So I don't think it's only when growing.

[-] Micromot@feddit.de 7 points 7 months ago

You're right I misremebered it. We usually grow our own potatatoes and there are already some green ones in there so I wrongly presumed it was only during growth

[-] Cethin@lemmy.zip 5 points 7 months ago

Ok, so when should they not be eaten?

[-] Micromot@feddit.de 23 points 7 months ago

Because the green indicates that toxins have formed inside the potato from exposure to sunlight

[-] gandalf_der_12te@feddit.de 1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

Basically the potato wants to protect itself from insects, and so it makes itself un-edible when exposed to sunlight, aka. the surface.

See above pic

[-] hglman@lemmy.ml 17 points 7 months ago

For what its worth the photo above is a sweet potato which is different and generally wont become poisonous.

[-] BastingChemina@slrpnk.net 7 points 7 months ago

Sweet potato leaves can even be eaten, they are nice stir fried with garlic and ginger.

However never try to eat regular potato leaves, they are poisonous

Also probably taste bitter and nasty, I once tried to eat a potato berry when I was younger and before I knew they weren't edible and it tasted awful. Don't judge me I was 5 and didn't know any better, but I definitely know better now.

Portal 2 moment

[-] ichmagrum@feddit.de 16 points 7 months ago

Potatoes can literally kill you with poisonous gas if you store too many of them wrong. It was a real risk when potato cellars were still a thing.

[-] hglman@lemmy.ml 14 points 7 months ago

You can start a new plant from each of those roots.

[-] MiddledAgedGuy@beehaw.org 5 points 7 months ago

I was curious how this came about, so reverse image seached. In short, it's lockdown potatoes.
