It's basically the same people buying homes that have been buying homes decades ago. New generations aren't really graduating into buying homes.

That is an unbelievable stat

[–] PKMKII@hexbear.net 27 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Really curious what this data looks like if you factor in homes bought by corporations.

[–] AntiOutsideAktion@hexbear.net 17 points 1 month ago

Turns out the average age of a home buyer is 14 days..?

[–] AF_R@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Ooh, and let’s also add an adjustment to the median age for actual home owners, not people who “bought” a loan from their bank which they are still paying off, until the end of which they don’t actually own the home

[–] PKMKII@hexbear.net 2 points 1 month ago

The data is trying to reflect the current state of home buyers. So while it would be illuminating to get a demographic comparison between recent buyers, those at least a year or two into a mortgage, and those who own their home outright, it wouldn’t be relevant for this particular context.

Is it cruel of me to hope that climate change absolutely wallops anything remotely resembling a comfortable retirement for the over-50 crowd? I don't normally do generational-war shit, no war but the class war, but there's this little persistent thought in the back of my mind that can be summed up as "fuck'em!"

[–] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 37 points 1 month ago

Yeah it is. Kids don't deserve it.

It's ok though we all think these things from time to time. You're only human and it's understandable to be frustrated by the state of affairs

It'll make things way worse for the under 50 crowd. Climate change effects young people way more.

Admittedly I think this all the time about all the retirees that build new homes in flood zones. The hubris it takes to do that is deserving of a catastrophic storm. Then add in the fact that they are a selfish group of know it all's that contributed the most to where we are at...

huh weird, wonder if something interesting happened in 2020 that might have resulted in an accelerated expropriation of all economic stability from the laboring masses.

We’re eating the seed corn.

Lol, lmao even.

You're getting corn?

the same people who bought homes in 1980 are the only people able to afford homes

tfw when everyone gives their paycheck to a landlord who then buys even more land

[–] nothx@hexbear.net 18 points 1 month ago (1 children)

maybe if the xoomers spent less money on labubus or whatever they could afford a new 50 year mortgage...

[–] TheAsianDonKnots@lemmy.zip 15 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I heard it was Labubu toast with everything bagel seasoning, specifically.

[–] nothx@hexbear.net 10 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Pushing 50 here, never owned a house.

[–] chgxvjh@hexbear.net 8 points 1 month ago

Unfortunately born 10-15 years to late to be a median home buyer.

back when the media was all in on millennial-bashing i found it most interesting how many people were repeating the nonsense without even knowing what the millennial age range was.

propaganda is fascinating to me. i really respect the art that goes into it. why it's so successful at control. watching it work on others has helped me see the cases when it's worked on me too, and make me wonder what 'truth' i hold will turn out to be a brainworm to shed next.

i burn to understand, to harness its power.
