Is this an ADHD thing? I used to have a job where I started at noon. It was horrific!

[–] chocrates@piefed.world 34 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I don't know if it's strictly ADHD but my brain can't relax at all if I have pending appointments. At least if I remember them.

[–] DragonTypeWyvern@midwest.social 30 points 2 months ago

Because if you do relax you WILL forget

[–] Chozo@fedia.io 13 points 2 months ago

It feels pretty accurate to my own experiences. No matter what time I start work, I have to make sure I wake up no more than 90 minutes before it's time to leave. For instance, my current shift starts at 5:30 P, so I wake up at 4:00 P. Otherwise, the longer I'm awake, the more time I have to convince myself of reasons to call out for the day.

It's not strictly an ADHD thing (is anything?), but it's a product of poor time management and anxiety, which are common with ADHD.

[–] ReCursing@feddit.uk 24 points 2 months ago (1 children)

No they're bloody not, that would mean I had to be up in the morning

[–] twack@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yea seriously, that just moves this whole charade to the night before and ruins my sleep.

[–] lka1988@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 2 months ago (1 children)

For real. I always end up being wide-fucking-awake until like 3AM prior to many early-morning appts. Even if I go to bed at 9 or 10. Doesn't matter how long I keep my eyes closed; either something itches every couple of minutes that requires significant body movements, or I gotta pee what seems like every 30 minutes, or I just. Can't. Sleep.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Hey that was last night for me. Currently waiting for my appointment. Still.

[–] GerardsGuitar@retrolemmy.com 21 points 2 months ago (3 children)

This happened to me today.

AND THEY NEVER ENDED UP CALLING

[–] Mouselemming@sh.itjust.works 12 points 2 months ago

Bastards! They owe you a whole day!

[–] GerardsGuitar@retrolemmy.com 2 points 2 months ago

They called the day after and literally said "i don't have anything to talk to you about"

THEN WHY BOOK A PHONE APPOINTMENT AND MAKE ME WASTE A DAY 💔

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

I very likely wouldn’t have answered anyway

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 17 points 2 months ago (1 children)

That's why I make all my appointments as early as possible. Get them over with!

[–] jaybone@lemmy.zip 16 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Then I worry I’m gonna oversleep and miss them. So I prefer the afternoon. Then I’m anxious all day because I did get up on time anyway.

[–] Almacca@aussie.zone 4 points 2 months ago

I don't sleep that much.

[–] finitebanjo@piefed.world 14 points 2 months ago

ADHDs staying up late and demanding all appointments are early so they can lose sleep and die faster.

[–] Album@lemmy.ca 14 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Used to be like this. Now I'm like how much can I cram in before 2pm.... Annnnnnd I'm late.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 10 points 2 months ago (1 children)

You need a bit more anxiety stirred into your mental illness stew

If I've got something at 2, all day in thinking about how's I have to get ready for 2.

I could pay a video game, but then I might be late. So I'll just think about why I can't do all the things I could be doing with my day instead.

[–] panda_abyss@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 months ago

Yes that is 100% me.

[–] mfed1122@discuss.tchncs.de 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Does anyone know what the "cause" of this is? Like, why does the brain do this? It's one of the things I most wish to change about myself.

[–] stray@pawb.social 4 points 2 months ago

I don't know whether any particular medication helps, but you can get into the habit of setting an alarm for X duration and just allowing yourself to enjoy an activity until the timer goes off. A lot of managing ADHD is setting rules and a schedule and doing your best to stick to it. It's not something you can just wake up and do, but it is something you can get better at over time. It's important to not be discouraged by failure, which is also a challenge in itself.

[–] moondoggie@lemmy.world 9 points 2 months ago (1 children)

If I have too much time before an appointment, I will be late. If I do everything at the last second, I’ll usually be a little early.

[–] Reverendender@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

I will very carefully plan exactly how much time I need, taking into account all necessary preparations. It will be ½ to ⅓ of what is actually required. Every time.

[–] affenlehrer@feddit.org 9 points 2 months ago

The last day of vacation is usually shit when there is a flight I have to catch. Extra shit if it's in the evening. I can't do anything relaxing or productive on that day until I'm at my destination.

[–] grrgyle@slrpnk.net 7 points 2 months ago

literally burned an entire morning because I have a shift that starts at 13h 🙈

[–] RebekahWSD@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

I was waiting for a call for an appointment to be made. When they said I have to be there at 8am, it was great. First thing in the morning and done for the rest of the day? Thank fuck.

[–] mysticpickle@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'm pretty sure I don't have ADHD but having any midday appointment turns my mornings into this.

[–] Eq0@literature.cafe 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I don’t have ADHD either, and I succeeded in getting out of it. Mainly by scheduling other stuff earlier, and over time just getting in a pattern of getting stuff done. Took a whiiiile (like a year or two of conscious effort) and still often takes a bunch of alarms being set.

[–] CarbonIceDragon@pawb.social 4 points 2 months ago

This is why, for all that getting up at 5 in the morning sucks, I'm glad my job has an early schedule. Having a closing shift effectively erases all the free time that exists that day

[–] _cryptagion@anarchist.nexus 4 points 2 months ago

early morning is the only time I can do appointments. waiting for shit is the worst.
