I'm (now somewhat half-heartedly I'm sad to say) going to give the Your Party project a chance to redeem itself and if it doesn't seem viable after the conference I'm joining the Greens.

Starting with rent controls and abolishing Right to Buy, a future Green Party-led government would also tax landlords via business rates on Airbnbs and double taxation on empty properties.

Under the proposals, the party would also end Buy to Let mortgages and give councils the Right to Buy when landlords sell properties, when the property doesn’t meet insulation standards, or when a property has been vacant for more than six months.

Carla Denyer, Green MP for Bristol Central, sought to stress that despite the motions "eye-catching" title, "it does not actually 'abolish' landlords".

The taxing empty property 2x is smart.

Clearly someone recognised that as soon as they gain power. A lot of land lords would start refusing to rent. In the hope of creating a housing shortage and forcing the gov to reset.

The taxation forces them to either rent or sell. And sell at a reasonable price given changes in the market.

It prevents wealthy property owners trying to hold the gov hostage.

I had a better idea. What about every additional house you own drives up the tax rate on every house you own by 1-2 %? This makes it affordable to still own a vacation house if you really want one, but by the 3-4th house, there's zero profit margin on the houses (if you're renting them out and it quickly becomes pointless or expensive to own multiple properties.

I applied to view a house the other day and the landlord started to interview me before giving a viewing and has now stopped replying.

Never heard of council houses? I know Thatcher sold off most of them but a few still exist. Right to buy is terrible.

Ask them, I’m not in the UK.

I would assume a non-partisan government entity of some sort. The same way public utilities or public health care is handled.

Break the house price into weekly deposits so that after 20 years you then own the house.

Basically renting should give you a percentage of ownership instead of just going to the landlord.

For starters.

This is to make investment properties and landbanking less attractive. There will still be landlords. But slumlords and opportunists will be less attracted.

And it's also allowing:

So that also partially answers your question about council housing numbers.

Having lived in a badly insulated rental I've often thought there should be some sort of incentive to encourage landlords to improve the energy efficiency of their properties. How to frame a tax that didn't immediately get passed onto the tenants?

In Vic we have "minimum standards" as part of our reforms. Property has to meet them. It's still gradually improving, the big issue is our tenants tribunal is backlogged and needs a fuckton more resources
