Donald Trump says the boat was carrying enough drugs to kill thousands of people.

So, what, a pound? A hundred? A thousand? This means fuck all if we don't know which drugs they were transporting. That's assuming they even were transporting drugs at all, which you'll excuse me if I don't take any US regime at their word.

The media needs to knock it off with this ridiculous "enough drugs to kill [x] people" scaremongering. A bottle of fucking aspirin is enough drugs to kill dozens of people too if you want to frame it that way.

[–] The_hypnic_jerk@hexbear.net 40 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Even if they were transporting drugs it's not a crime generally considered punishable by bombing lol

It is if you believe in the Rules-Based International Order: the United States makes the rules and issues the orders.

[–] woodenghost@hexbear.net 20 points 13 hours ago

Their racist propaganda is so bad it's not even worth arguing over.

[–] woodenghost@hexbear.net 40 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

It's simply indiscriminate terrorism aiming to spread mass fear and create instability.

Famously successful for the Nazis

I haven't been on reddit recently, but during Trump's first term, I still recall virulently anti-Trump posters actually running defense for him when he was talking about invading Venezuela

These people utterly despise Trump, but brutalizing non-Western countries is a bipartisan issue

[–] ConcreteHalloween@hexbear.net 11 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

There's less of that but you still see it pop up occasionally. I've seen a lot of "well I don't want TRUMP to invade cuz he's incompetent and corrupt".

[–] SacredExcrement@hexbear.net 8 points 13 hours ago

"Now Dubya knew how to invade a country"

[–] WildWeezing420@hexbear.net 3 points 12 hours ago

bombing some foreign country is how you become "presidential"

RT reported that it's likely the administration is trying to goad Venezuela into a response that justifies US doing a decapitating strike on Maduro. So each of these events is best seen as poking at Maduro, trying to get a violent response.

Thing is even if Maduro just takes slap after slap without hitting back they could still just kill him anyways.

I thought of this before Trump got elected again but it comes back into the fore. The problem with China's non-interventionist policy is it can be blunted by a US violently and directly interventionist policy of regime change, color revolutions, coups, wars, decapitating strikes, sanctions, etc. Sure the big countries like Russia and India can afford to stand up to the US and those within China's orbit who do more trade with China and have more to lose from China will stick with them for the most part. The issue is tons of people out there across the world who are greedy little comprador opportunists, unprincipled, etc who will do what's best for their pocket-books even if it burns their nation to the ground. We may or may not see this with Afghanistan if those rumors of the US offering the Taliban shit-loads of money are true, it would be putting greed over the good of their people but for religious fundamentalists that shouldn't be a surprise.

Sure the world eventually gets wary of this and after 10-20 years most countries overthrow the regime (though usually remain trapped in some sort of debt bondage their previous leaders put them in and don't go far enough in the the sense of throwing off the shackles) but then the US can just switch back to friendly liberal mode. As long as they dominate the propaganda, as long as they control the culture, as long as they have Hollywood and control of the internet. And even if that doesn't work it gives the US a decade of dominance and control in which to encircle, isolate, and remove China from the global economy and pour pressure on them to attempt to force a collapse or surrender.

They're not even bothering to say which drug it is

[–] SorosFootSoldier@hexbear.net 21 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

It's THE DRUG ™ a new narcotic cooked up by the dastardly Maduro and his cronies in Tren De Aqua.

A lib I work with who hates Trump....now I don't want to put words in his mouth, or pretend I can read his mind, but because he often times in the past has tried to give plausible deniability to actions by the government, I got the impression he was hesitant to believe Trump would have fishing boats sunk and their passengers murdered; I've had to mention that Trump and Vance both directly mock the attacks as being on fishing boats to get him to understand that they're just striking random vessels in the area.

[–] cricbuzz@hexbear.net 17 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

what's the difference between 'unclassified' and 'declassified'. unclassified seems to indicate it wasn't classified to begin with?

[–] Rom@hexbear.net 13 points 14 hours ago

Right, declassified was once classified but had the classification lowered later.

[–] Llituro@hexbear.net 22 points 15 hours ago

Definitely fishermen again then.

[–] greenbelt@lemy.lol 6 points 14 hours ago (1 children)

Do we know (GPS) coordinates of these strikes, has anyone collected them on a map? It has been 4 or 3 strikes now they released, can not remember.

[–] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 9 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Quite difficult to geolocate random waves.

[–] greenbelt@lemy.lol 4 points 13 hours ago (1 children)

Yeah area is just general Caribbean I guess. And the US military does not release any more information.

[–] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 5 points 13 hours ago

Most information we have today is from Hegseth saying that the strike was "in international waters just off of the coast of Venezuela" and a video from US Southern Command showing F-35Bs loaded up with GBU-54 laser guided JDAMs.

Hegseth says that the strike was "in international waters just off of the coast of Venezuela".

US Southern Command coincidentally uploaded a video today showing the armament of US Marine F-35B aircraft, with 500lb GBU-54 laser guided JDAMs (able to hit moving surface targets like speedboats) and AIM-120C-7 and/or AIM-120D AMRAAM active radar guided air to air missiles (both pictured) along with AIM-9X-2 Sidewinder infrared guided air to air missiles on external stealthy pylons. So the aircraft were operating in a stealth configuration despite the presence of external stores.

[–] Carl@hexbear.net 4 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

500lb GBU-54 laser guided JDAMs

god what fucking overkill. unless the boat's a military vessel there is no way this is a proportional amount of ordnance to use on it.

[–] MarmiteLover123@hexbear.net 2 points 12 hours ago* (last edited 11 hours ago)

According to the text in the video "only" 192lbs of the bomb is PBXN-109 explosive filler. The rest is the casing and so forth. It's probably the cheapest bomb for hitting moving targets. There are no JDAMs, yet alone laser guided ones, below 500lbs, the 250lb JDAM got cancelled. The 250lb bombs are from the SDB glide bomb series and are significantly more expensive. F-35s can't carry AGM-65 Maverick missiles either, and some variants of those have a 300lb warhead. Drones can carry AGM-114 Hellfire missiles, but carrying out a strike right next to Venezuela with one would be risky for the US, plus Hellfires are also more expensive.

Just look at the video of the strike. There's shrapnel all over the water. Don't think there are any humane concerns here.
