Time to go back to IRC and Ventrilo.

[–] Cevilia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 3 weeks ago

Where's the nice bit of IRC these days?

GoofCord also exists if you want some variety.

Wonder how soon Discord decides third party apps like this one are bad and does a reddit by either turning off API access completely or charging extortionate prices for it...

These are not working with the API directly. It's just Discord's web client trapped in Electron, with JS/CSS injection and tracking stripped. The reason for this is that if you touch some API endpoints of Discord in an uncharacteristic for a normal client ways, your account gets banned immediately. Of course it's still detectable, but Discord does not really care. It's a measure against user bots, not against those who put in a CSS snippet to make the background pink.

That said, if you want to try living on the edge, give Discordo a shot.

Ahh, I wasn't aware of that, thanks! The more you know.

Tbf those third party clients and clientmods are already against their ToS just just aren't baning anyone for using them (yet)

[–] als@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 3 weeks ago

The last time I used Discord, I thought all of these third party apps are against terms of service and have your account liable for deletion if they want. I'm not sure how common that actually is though.

[–] ggtdbz@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 3 weeks ago

I think they used to allow them outright before, or at least were very lax.

RIP that one CLI Discord client. That had all I wanted out of Discord for 90% of the time I have the app open.

Nice, didn't know about that one. Looks good!

Fuck Discord

Genuinely cant fathom why people are still using Discord in 2025

[–] otacon239@lemmy.world 28 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Probably because all their friends are on there

[–] artyom@piefed.social 7 points 3 weeks ago

Same as every other platform

[–] superglue@lemmy.dbzer0.com 15 points 3 weeks ago

If you can convince my friends to leave then I'll leave too

[–] chickenf622@sh.itjust.works 9 points 3 weeks ago

Is there an alternative that has voice chat and streaming capabilities? That's the main hang up I'm having in migrating to something like Revolt.

[–] Eheran@lemmy.world 7 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I never understood how it replaced TeamSpeak in the first place. At the same time, they were stagnating and not making it better... But still odd.

Discord STILL has no sound notification when you are talking muted. Such an absolutely basic feature. Not to mention their laughably bad sounds for (un)muting that sound almost alike.

[–] Mwa@thelemmy.club 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Cause none of my friends will leave discord so you can say "vendor-lock in"

[–] JandroDelSol@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

can't get my friends to migrate elsewhere

[–] solrize@lemmy.ml 8 points 3 weeks ago

They fall for it every single time.

[–] jjjalljs@ttrpg.network 6 points 3 weeks ago

I don't know why anyone would be surprised that discord is getting shittier. It's a private for profit org. Not getting shitty is an exception.

Never use the app when there is a website version available?
