I'm not going to post a link to them because I'm not promoting that shit with a ten foot pole, but they're those ads where a couple of women are shopping and one of them is like "Hey Gemini, tell me what product to buy!" And the AI scans the shelf of products and says "Sure thing bestie, buy that one because its number one with your favorite influencer!" Or some something like that.

They have this weird dystopian vibe to them too. Are marketers going their way to make AI seem as unappealing and creepy as possible?

no i have not seen an ad in years

[–] Dort_Owl@hexbear.net 26 points 7 months ago (1 children)

I only ever see them when I'm using other peoples stuff. It's always really jarring.

Whenever I visit someone who watches TV my first thought is always a shocked "wtf, how do you live like this?" as they zone out for the commercial break every five minutes.

It poisons the brain, it has to be detrimental to mental health to be subjected to this for your whole life. When you don't see them for weeks and then it pops up it feels offensive.

Finally a useful application for AI, removing the middleman from affiliate marketing scams

I've been seeing Shopify ads telling me I can set up a dropshipping business in just a few clicks

[–] Fossifoo@hexbear.net 2 points 7 months ago

And to run the business you just use one of these "bookkeeping with AI" apps. I'm sure that's not going to cause any issue whatsoever...

What not blocking ads does to a mf

[–] Dort_Owl@hexbear.net 18 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (4 children)

This was when I was at a friends and some of their streaming services play ads.

What not blocking ads does to a mf's friend

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 7 points 7 months ago (2 children)

i hope you criticised their lack of ad blocking

[–] Dort_Owl@hexbear.net 4 points 7 months ago

Well, I did mention I could help them block ads, maybe I can convince them, eventually.

how to make friends and influence people (2025)

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 4 points 7 months ago (1 children)

If saying "yooooo why haven't you installed ublock these ads are disgusting" is somehow a dealbreaker for a relationship it was never one to begin with lmao come on now let's not be melodramatic

[–] Abracadaniel@hexbear.net 3 points 7 months ago (1 children)

totally fair. I guess I read criticizing as more, well, critical. I'm a rude enough person as it is I need to be careful how I go about these things lol.

[–] Awoo@hexbear.net 4 points 7 months ago

Tell em the friendship is fucking OVER because you had to see a L'Oreal Hair Dye ad before your youtube video

[–] peeonyou@hexbear.net 2 points 7 months ago

you should end your friendship with them

I've seen one that may have also been for a phone or something where some Young Person says ”Hey Gemini, I need to study for an exam, can you read this material and summarize it for me?” and uses her phone to scan the material or something? Then the AI explains it to a whole crowd of people and they're able to ask followup questions.

First of all, lol, there's absolutely no way this works as advertised. Second, there's no way a scenario where a bunch of students crowd around one phone to study and ask the phone questions has happened or will ever happen.

hey gemini, how do I kill myself?

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 16 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago) (2 children)

I never saw one of those ads until now - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9bBfYX8X5aU

this advertisement is genuinely dystopian, creepy, and bizarre. please never make an ad about AI like this ever again

The funny thing is that reply was the summary in my google results.

[–] Dort_Owl@hexbear.net 7 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Oh wow, that's not the ad I was thinking of, but it's almost as bad.

[–] InevitableSwing@hexbear.net 5 points 7 months ago

not the ad I was thinking of

I couldn't find that one. Google was shit. As always.

[–] HexReplyBot@hexbear.net 1 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

I found a YouTube link in your comment. Here are links to the same video on alternative frontends that protect your privacy:

AI is being marked as a replacement for having thoughts and making decisions.

Its crazy because some of the AI ads I've seen are literally just shit i would have googled back when google actually kinda worked, like how to fix something. Now you get to boil the ocean and the search results are worse.

[–] Damarcusart@hexbear.net 15 points 7 months ago

I would put money on AI being involved in the creation and writing of an ad like that, which might explain the uncanny vibe it has. Or maybe it's just corporate suits who don't know how to talk to actual humans.

Can we make a new internet where companies over 10 employees are specifically banned from participation? Including subsidiaries or smaller companies underneath "parent" companies or something.

[–] corgiwithalaptop@hexbear.net 8 points 7 months ago

Normally I would agree with this, but if I do, I would be the 11th person thus barring it from happening.

[–] plinky@hexbear.net 8 points 7 months ago

i think last year or whenever apple was peddling it's "intelligence", the funniest ad i have seen popped up, where a guy scans a dog with camera to determine its breed, while standing 2 meters away from owner. Like my man, what kind of crippling anxiety you can possibly have for that to make any amount of sense, even for deaf person it would be easier to signal and give a phone to write the name, cause it's just nicer behavior.

[–] tamagotchicowboy@hexbear.net 6 points 7 months ago

No, my adblockers aren't playing, irl I've been blessed to not have seen any weird AI ads, just awkward regular ones.

[–] ryepunk@hexbear.net 6 points 7 months ago

The AI ads I always get are just grifters shilling how to do basic life tasks with our custom AI! And it describes just putting all your daily tasks into a spread sheet and then letting ai build your weekly schedules for you.

The ones where it promises to make you a better writer is very funny as well. Because it isn't really making you a better writer now is it? And is it really better? Or is it simply something that might usually be grammatically correct but often will lack any substance to the topic you are writing about.
