Rules:

1. Be civil

Attack the argument, not the person. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Good faith argumentation only. This includes accusing another user of being a bot or paid actor. Trolling is uncivil and is grounds for removal and/or a community ban. Do not respond to rule-breaking content; report it and move on.

2. All posts should contain a source (url) that is as reliable and unbiased as possible and must only contain one link.

Obvious biased sources will be removed at the mods’ discretion. Supporting links can be added in comments or posted separately but not to the post body. Sources may be checked for reliability using Wikipedia, MBFC, AdFontes, GroundNews, etc.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Post titles should be the same as the article used as source. Clickbait titles may be removed.

Posts which titles don’t match the source may be removed. If the site changed their headline, we may ask you to update the post title. Clickbait titles use hyperbolic language and do not accurately describe the article content. When necessary, post titles may be edited, clearly marked with [brackets], but may never be used to editorialize or comment on the content.

5. Only recent news is allowed.

Posts must be news from the most recent 30 days.

6. All posts must be news articles.

No opinion pieces, Listicles, editorials, videos, blogs, press releases, or celebrity gossip will be allowed. All posts will be judged on a case-by-case basis. Mods may use discretion to pre-approve videos or press releases from highly credible sources that provide unique, newsworthy content not available or possible in another format.

7. No duplicate posts.

If an article has already been posted, it will be removed. Different articles reporting on the same subject are permitted. If the post that matches your post is very old, we refer you to rule 5.

8. Misinformation is prohibited.

Misinformation / propaganda is strictly prohibited. Any comment or post containing or linking to misinformation will be removed. If you feel that your post has been removed in error, credible sources must be provided.

9. No link shorteners or news aggregators.

All posts must link to original article sources. You may include archival links in the post description. News aggregators such as Yahoo, Google, Hacker News, etc. should be avoided in favor of the original source link. Newswire services such as AP, Reuters, or AFP, are frequently republished and may be shared from other credible sources.

10. Don't copy entire article in your post body

For copyright reasons, you are not allowed to copy an entire article into your post body. This is an instance wide rule, that is strictly enforced in this community.

Delta State Police Chief Michael Peeler said there was also no evidence of an ongoing threat to students and faculty. He told reporters Monday the death investigation was being assisted by the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation as well as local police and sheriff's deputies.

Online rumors that the student was found with broken limbs were disputed by Bolivar County Coroner Randolph Seals Jr.

A black person hanging from a tree in Mississippi? Sure, it could be suicide, but c'mon. Let's be real here. It's on them to prove that this wasn't a lynching.

[–] SoupBrick@pawb.social 69 points 7 months ago

Accountability? For police? 😐

[–] chuckleslord@lemmy.world 36 points 7 months ago

Black people don't hang themselves. To do so is to inflict the fear of a lynching on your loved ones and community. So if you hear that a black person committed suicide by hanging, assume lynching.

[–] Dasus@lemmy.world 15 points 7 months ago

Sure, it could be suicide, but c'mon

I think a person killing themselves would probably not try to frame others for it. What, he thought it would be funny?

So yeah, no way in hell am I buying that this was a suicide.

This was in Cleveland, in the Mississippi Delta. For those who don't know, the Mississippi Delta had some of the largest plantations in Mississippi and the racial and economic divide still very much holds up today. Plus Mississippi authorities are some of the most racist in the country, so no foul play my ass

[–] ChonkyLincoln@lemmy.zip 87 points 7 months ago

Oh, ABC says that? The Nazi propaganda machine that just fired Jimmy Kimmel? Nothing to see here folks!

Yeah, you know, black people hang themselves all the time in Mississippi.

Don’t know what about Mississippi makes black people want to hang themselves so much more than in other states. Must be a black people issue.

The family is seeking an independent autopsy. Do we know about how long that will take? Somehow, no matter the results, I doubt i'll continue to see much about this specific incident in national news, and I'd like to remind myself to check back in on this.

[–] BanMe@lemmy.world 18 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Shouldn't take long but yes the media will be over this by then, they barely touched it.

This is going to be another one of those "we demand justice for" and within a month Trump will be badmouthing the poor guy that was hanged.

[–] tamal3@lemmy.world 14 points 7 months ago

*lynched

No disrespect meant, but that's what this was (barring independent evidence to the contrary).

[–] tamal3@lemmy.world 1 points 6 months ago

Checking back in. No news from the 2nd autopsy yet, wonder why?

[–] MuskyMelon@lemmy.world 43 points 7 months ago (2 children)

Some trees in Mississippi have always grown hanging black people don't you know?

[–] Deceptichum@quokk.au 26 points 7 months ago (1 children)

What strange fruit those trees have,

[–] BrundleFly2077@sh.itjust.works 2 points 7 months ago

Scrolled looking. Beat me to it.

[–] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 40 points 7 months ago (1 children)

A black person hanging from a tree, in a southern state, is itself a sign of foul play.

[–] billwashere@lemmy.world 12 points 6 months ago

Pretty sure if anybody is found hanging from a tree without a chair or something under them is foul play. A black person hanging from a tree with nothing under them is likely a lynching and a hate crime.

Lol make sure you believe the county coronor!! It's a job you can get just by pretending to know things. There are literally no qualifications beyond being appointed. I bet that guy really knows his stuff.

[–] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 3 points 7 months ago

https://people.com/police-initially-told-family-black-student-trey-reed-found-dead-dorm-lawyer-says-11812044

Police told his parents they found him dead in his bed, they found out from the news that he was hanged.

No foul play, my ass.

[–] runner_g@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 6 months ago

Let me guess, the police chief's son is involved.

[–] drunkpostdisaster@lemmy.world 18 points 7 months ago

Reddit bans all mention of that.

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 12 points 7 months ago (1 children)

Poor kid. Whether suicide or otherwise. A tragedy.

[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 14 points 7 months ago (1 children)

It’s Mississippi. It was a lynching, and like every lynching in the past, they’ve said “oh it must have been a suicide, we’ve got no evidence!”

Chances are, the people investigating them are friends with, or in fact are, the people that did it,

[–] PattyMcB@lemmy.world 6 points 7 months ago (1 children)
[–] FuglyDuck@lemmy.world 9 points 7 months ago

Absolutely.

But it wasn’t a suicide. It was murder.

[–] Dorkyd68@lemmy.world 11 points 7 months ago

Mississippi has a history of sweeping black murders under the rug.

[–] RBWells@lemmy.world 9 points 7 months ago

Mississippi Goddamn.

[–] spirinolas@lemmy.world 7 points 7 months ago

There was nobody around using bed sheets or burning crosses. Let's not jump into conclusions.

[–] Tigeroovy@lemmy.ca 7 points 7 months ago

So the police did it. Or someone related to the police.

people need to stop paying federal taxes.

[–] JcbAzPx@lemmy.world 2 points 7 months ago (1 children)

This one is on Mississippi. Withholding federal taxes won't help with this.

[–] MangioneDontMiss@feddit.nl 2 points 7 months ago

All of this shit is being precipitated by the shit happening in washington.

Obligatory: Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday. Circa 1959.

[–] zipzoopaboop@lemmynsfw.com 2 points 6 months ago

Some of those who work forces are the same who burn crosses

Novody cares, he wasn't white.

[–] ganksy@lemmy.world 3 points 6 months ago

A second hanging was found just after in a different part of Mississippi. This victim was white. Will be interesting to see if there's interest. He was reportedly unhoused so another easy write off for the media.
