So I'm only familiar with D&D in a general sense... is there a reason the mage party can't just, like, levitate the barbarian? Seems like then you'd have a very angry, very sturdy BBEG balloon to dispose with as you like.

[–] SippyCup@feddit.nl 1 points 15 hours ago

Levitate only lasts ten minutes, and the target gets a con save which is one of the barbarians class saves, he only goes up 20 feet if he fails, which puts the very angry barbarian within throwing object range.

Even in the worst case the barbarian will only be levitated for a handful of rounds and the wizard will want to be using offensive spells.

With the right eldrich blast build who needs spell slots.

Booming blade can get nasty too, but requires a lot more work for spacing/movement.

Booming Blade Swashbuckler, my beloved

Coffeelock was ridiculous shenanigans.

Warlock 2/ Sorcerer X needs spellslots to fuel quicken spell metamagic (for more eldritch blast)

Bear totem barbarian bbegs are the bane of every party. Fireball? So that's 26 damage.... Halved.

"And halved again...." reveals Teifling horns

[–] MouseKeyboard@ttrpg.network 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Resistance doesn't stack, so it's only halved once.

Ah, fair point. Didn't realize. Stacking resistance has never come up at my table, so i never had reason to figure that out.

"And what you have are hit points, and the hope that before your hit points are empty, our spells slots have run out"

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago

Imagine playing a wizard that cares about hit points.

Well technically the barbarian can only rage for a limited time without having to rest too (although he's a lot more dangerous without rage than a caster without spells is). Would a rogue have no limited resource other than hitpoints?

[–] makeshiftreaper@lemmy.world 40 points 3 days ago (2 children)

At levels above 17 the Barbarian can rage for a full hour straight, which is 600 rounds. That rage is out lasting the spell slots

Hey. One hour combat? Have you played D&D? 🤣

[–] Quetzalcutlass@lemmy.world 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

With a full party of casters? One hour IC, a couple years OOC.

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago

Let's not forget new caster players. That maneuver costs decades.

Rogue assassin archer can run away while shooting you. Being able to dash as a bonus action means they'll outrun you most of the time. Add in the sharpshooter feat, and they can ignore 1/2 and 3/4 cover. Any time they can get sneak attack means they can just do stupid amounts of damage.

[–] FordBeeblebrox@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Depends on the subclass I guess, my arcane trickster can stab kidneys forever but can’t misty step out of danger all day, cunning action dash can get you out of most spots though.

[–] Phantaminum@lemmy.zip 15 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago) (1 children)

That sounds like a really fun combat for a level 11 or less party!

[–] Shiggles@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 days ago (2 children)

… is the joke Irressitable dance? Is it somehow unthinkable to you that a powerful barbarian might have found some way around charm spells/other single targetsave or sucks? What if they just happen to be a Berserker?

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

Is it somehow unthinkable to you that a powerful barbarian might have found some way around charm spells/other single targetsave or sucks?

Idk, did he ever learn to read?

[–] Phantaminum@lemmy.zip 7 points 3 days ago (1 children)

You can certanly balance the combat, don't get me worng, but I think that a party from level 11 onwards can outmanouver a Berserker in ways he es not able to keep up. Most of the casters should fly by that point and its been a while but I think by level 11 casters already have access to some way to have the action economy on their side, like Animate object or summon animals (is that the druid's one?). In the minwhile the other party members can spam save or suck spells as you said! O guess the real breakpoint is level 13 when they have access to forcecage.

I really wish martial characters had some superhuman "spells" like your clasic super hero shockwave or those big jumps... I know monks can jump really far, but I wish most characters could!

[–] ouRKaoS@lemmy.today 8 points 3 days ago (1 children)

A D&D Barbarian with a Diablo 2 style ridiculous-ranged Leap Attack would be absolutely terrifying.

[–] Phantaminum@lemmy.zip 5 points 3 days ago (1 children)

As they should, would love to narrate that scene!

[–] otter@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 days ago

Grog has entered the chat

[–] Honytawk@lemmy.zip 10 points 3 days ago (1 children)

All depends on how many times they can cast hold person.

[–] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 4 points 3 days ago

Ring of free action laughs

Depends on what the casters have. Stand at the edge of a tall cliff or other height. Contingent action cast Dimension Door. Barb takes the fall, you appear where he was standing last round.

What do spell slots let you do, funny masked man?
