holding flashlight under face

Imagine a terrifying world where we are all ruled by monsters of every stripe. And not hot ones like werewolves, but instead decaying zombies and mummies who are both insensitive to, and actively benefit from the immense suffering they cause on a daily basis. The top echelon of society, filled with profit-seeking, bloodsucking vampires. And the worst of it is that they repeat on a daily basis that what they are doing is not only just, but there is no other possible way to do it.

Pretty spooky, right? What if I told you that this world... was our own?

Happy Halloween!

Friendly reminder: when commenting about a news event, especially something that just happened, please provide a source of some kind. While ideally this would be on nitter or archived, any source is preferable to none at all given.

If you have evidence of Israeli crimes and atrocities that you wish to preserve, there is a thread here in which to do so.

Sources on the fighting in Palestine against Israel. In general, CW for footage of battles, explosions, dead people, and so on:

UNRWA daily-ish reports on Israel's destruction and siege of Gaza and the West Bank.

English-language Palestinian Marxist-Leninist twitter account. Alt here.
English-language twitter account that collates news (and has automated posting when the person running it goes to sleep).
Arab-language twitter account with videos and images of fighting.
English-language (with some Arab retweets) Twitter account based in Lebanon.
English-language Palestinian Twitter account which reports on news from the Resistance Axis.

English-language PalestineResist telegram channel.
More telegram channels here for those interested.

Various sources that are covering the Ukraine conflict are also covering the one in Palestine, like Rybar.

The Country of the Week is Lebanon! Feel free to chime in with books, essays, longform articles, even stories and anecdotes or rants. More detail here.

Here is the map of the Ukraine conflict, courtesy of Wikipedia.

This week's first update is here.

Links and Stuff

The bulletins site is down.

Examples of Ukrainian Nazis and fascists

Examples of racism/euro-centrism during the Russia-Ukraine conflict

Add to the above list if you can.

Resources For Understanding The War

Defense Politics Asia's youtube channel and their map. Their youtube channel has substantially diminished in quality but the map is still useful.

Moon of Alabama, which tends to have interesting analysis. Avoid the comment section.

Understanding War and the Saker: reactionary sources that have occasional insights on the war.

Alexander Mercouris, who does daily videos on the conflict. While he is a reactionary and surrounds himself with likeminded people, his daily update videos are relatively brainworm-free and good if you don't want to follow Russian telegram channels to get news. He also co-hosts The Duran, which is more explicitly conservative, racist, sexist, transphobic, anti-communist, etc when guests are invited on, but is just about tolerable when it's just the two of them if you want a little more analysis.

On the ground: Patrick Lancaster, an independent and very good journalist reporting in the warzone on the separatists' side.

Unedited videos of Russian/Ukrainian press conferences and speeches.

Telegram Channels

Again, CW for anti-LGBT and racist, sexist, etc speech, as well as combat footage.

Pro-Russian

https://t.me/aleksandr_skif ~ DPR's former Defense Minister and Colonel in the DPR's forces. Russian language.

https://t.me/Slavyangrad ~ A few different pro-Russian people gather frequent content for this channel (~100 posts per day), some socialist, but all socially reactionary. If you can only tolerate using one Russian telegram channel, I would recommend this one.

https://t.me/s/levigodman ~ Does daily update posts.

https://t.me/patricklancasternewstoday ~ Patrick Lancaster's telegram channel.

https://t.me/gonzowarr ~ A big Russian commentator.

https://t.me/rybar ~ One of, if not the, biggest Russian telegram channels focussing on the war out there. Actually quite balanced, maybe even pessimistic about Russia. Produces interesting and useful maps.

https://t.me/epoddubny ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/boris_rozhin ~ Russian language.

https://t.me/mod_russia_en ~ Russian Ministry of Defense. Does daily, if rather bland updates on the number of Ukrainians killed, etc. The figures appear to be approximately accurate; if you want, reduce all numbers by 25% as a 'propaganda tax', if you don't believe them. Does not cover everything, for obvious reasons, and virtually never details Russian losses.

https://t.me/UkraineHumanRightsAbuses ~ Pro-Russian, documents abuses that Ukraine commits.

Pro-Ukraine

Almost every Western media outlet.

https://discord.gg/projectowl ~ Pro-Ukrainian OSINT Discord.

https://t.me/ice_inii ~ Alleged Ukrainian account with a rather cynical take on the entire thing.

Ta-Nehisi Coates on his visit to Israel and Palestine - "There's a word that come up all the time and it's 'complexity' and it's closely related adjective 'complicated'... I assumed it would be hard to descern right from wrong to understand the morality at play [and the conflict]. But perhaps the most shocking thing was that I immediately understood."

video - https://video.twimg.com/amplify_video/1720062305562497024/vid/avc1/480x270/OZBnhaK-xzfYInO9.mp4?tag=16

"You can't behold evil and then return and not speak on it."

Ta-Nehisi Coates speaks about how an experience in Palestine illuminated the connections between the African American and Palestinian liberation struggles, and the moral responsibility to speak out.

A thread with some interesting points on the latest Israeli claim of a hostage being retaken:

"The girl was not a prisoner in the first place. Her name - Ori Megidish - was not on the official list of hostages. Her name was added to it later, but the site was archived prior, without the girl's name being visible anywhere on it"

The full POW list via the BBC also does not show her name

The #Israeli prisoner whom the occupation claimed to have liberated through a complex operation published a post on Facebook on 10/12, 5 days after the Al-Aqsa Flood operation.

edit: this facebook account does not seem to be her but the other points hold up so far. this may or may not have been a thing where they slapped an Israeli soldier inside Gaza, did a photo op, then took her out and acted as if she was a hostage - I think the most plausible version of events currently is that she was separated from her unit during a ground incursion, perhaps taken prisoner or perhaps just got lost and hunkered down and called for aid via radio or something, and then rescued one way or another - this isn't somebody who was taken hostage in the October 7th attack, at least that's what the current evidence suggests.

I’m feeling a mixture of optimism and caution. This is the first time in my life, since the George Floyd protests and riots, that I’ve seen one of the “eternal” veils of propaganda stripped from so many people’s eyes. This is a good thing, but I feel incredibly cautious because this leads to wanton brutality upon the masses by the bourgeoise as they struggle to maintain control

Russian communist talks about her visit to Rome:

Haven’t been to the Eternal City, I'm ashamed to say, for almost 10 months! It's a big mess. Let's make up for it.

Rome is still the same. We go to a cell phone store to buy a SIM card. Behind the counters are hot Apennine guys.

  • “Russians?… Come on, don't wait in line. Hey, we love Putin!”
  • “But we don't,” we mutter gloomily through clenched teeth and skip the line.

We go to the cafeteria for coffee and pistachio cake.

  • “Russians? Allora, let's swap, take Meloni, give us Putin! We want Putin to be our prime minister!”
  • “Yes, take Putin,” I say, “but we don't give a shit about your Meloni....”

Settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank is rising sharply.

Attacks on Palestinians in the occupied West Bank are surging, with at least 115 killed, more than 2,000 injured and nearly 1,000 others forcibly displaced from their homes because of violence and intimidation by Israeli forces and settlers since Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, according the United Nations.

Among the dead are 33 children, according to an update on Sunday from the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, which has been tracking the conflicts.

Shoot and cry bullshit about soldiers firing artillery day after day in Syria and getting fucked up from all the explosive blasts next to them

Instead, in case after case, the military treated the crews’ combat injuries as routine psychiatric disorders, if they treated them at all. Troops were told they had attention deficit disorder or depression. Many were given potent psychotropic drugs that made it hard to function and failed to provide much relief.

“I gave the Marine Corps everything,” he said. “And they spit me out with nothing. Damaged, damaged, very damaged.”

Just out of curiosity I looked at what Media Bias Fact Check says about the Electronic Intifada. They rated it Mostly Factual (4 out of 6).

A quote from the site:

... I would rate EI as mostly factual in reporting despite the use of excellent sourcing in most articles and left biased based on story selection and wording that sometimes amounts to propaganda such as this: No hope, no future, only revenge.
A factual search reveals they have not formally failed a fact check.
Overall, we rate Electronic Intifada Left biased based on strong pro-Palestinian and anti-Israeli bias. We also rate them Mostly Factual in reporting, rather than High, due to a lack of transparency regarding funding, as well as strongly loaded emotional wording that may be misleading.

An MSNBC reporter just described the slaughter at the Jabalia refugee camp as a "mass casualty event". I guess that will be the American media's generic go-to term for Israeli behavior in Gaza. I wonder what term they'll use in the West Bank. I don't think it'll be "mass casualty event" because it seems to me the media likes that term to describe allies acting in war zones. And they don't want Americans to think of Israeli actions in the West Bank has being warlike.

---

Edit

Ghouls everywhere.

An MSNBC military guy (Jack Jacobs) just said that's possible that what happened in Jabalia might have been due to an Israeli airstrike with possibly a bunker busting bomb or it could have been caused by munitions stored underground. He said "There's no way to know."

Feels like the media and western governments are really honing in on the “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” chant over the last few days. In their view, that constitutes promoting the destruction of Israel and is thus terrorism and (ironically) promoting genocide.

I mean, yeah, we do want the destruction of the Israeli state. Settler colonial states don’t have a “right” to exist (USA, Canada, Australia et al included). The problem is, since most people are so woefully ignorant of the history of Palestine, they don’t understand that the destruction of Israel does not mean, like, killing everyone there. It means the destruction of the racist and apartheid system. Palestine will only be free when there is one binational secular state where the rights of all are protected, and the Palestinians who were forced out are allowed to return. So while I (and do think we, too) do not believe anyone currently in Israel proper should be forced out much less killed, the current fascist theocratic ethnostate of Israel must be eliminated.

IRL, I’ve tried to explain the “from the river to the sea” chant by comparing it to South Africa. It was only just that the apartheid system be smashed. South Africa under apartheid was effectively like Israel/Palestine now: bantustans were essentially occupied territory and had no real autonomy but Africans were also not allowed to have any real say in the overall system. When that system was dismantled, South Africa was no longer a racist white supremacist state that legally constrained the rights of the majority of the population. Obviously the work was not complete as there is still significant economic and political disparity, but South Africa was transformed from a racist white supremacist state that occupied and held down the black majority to a multinational state where there is ostensibly equal rights for all. And at no point (to my knowledge) was there any serious consideration to shipping off the white population back to the UK and Holland, much less serious advocacy for genociding them.

I think people have a much easier time wrapping their heads around the situation in South Africa. Just sucks that people are so ignorant that you have to go into such detail to explain it. Not that western governments care, this crackdown on speech is genuinely getting scary.

Israel might be targeting UNRWA facilities, former UN official says

Former UNRWA spokesman Chris Gunness pointed to the fact that more than 70 UNRWA staff have been killed and more than 40 facilities have been hit by Israeli strikes.

“Whether or not UNRWA is being targeted, I can’t answer that, but the fact is UNRWA staff are being killed, [and] UNRWA facilities are being hit,” he said.

“They [the Israeli military] know the GPS coordinates. Draw your own conclusions.”

Is the Nasrallah speech on Friday really expected to be that big a deal? When it first came up, I didn't think too much about it considering it was scheduled an entire week away. Surely if it was that important, they'd want to put it out ASAP, right? My assumption was that it'd just be Nasrallah summarizing the situation, giving another strongly worded denouncement of Israel, and then business as usual.

I'm unsubbing from Bernie's emails. His latest resistance to occupation = terrorism and both-sides liberalism "humanitarian pause" pandering two state bullshit is the last straw.

How are they goihg to split the baby Bernie? You think the fascist fanatics that rule Israel will give Palestinians a fair deal, give them their land back? You think they'll drop the settlements and the blockades and go home?

People in office need to understand these are the natives fighting back against their oppressors.
