I never cared what Python devs thought before, no reason to start now.

Of course it does, Piefed's development as an alternative to Lemmy has always been ideological in nature, wanting to create a platform where the leftists have all been purged.

Piefed's development as an alternative to Lemmy has always been ideological in nature, wanting to create a platform where the leftists have all been purged.

To be fair, they also asked the question, "What if Lemmy, but with corporate sponsors?"

[–] Cowbee@hexbear.net 49 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Yea lmao. Let's reinvent Reddit from the ground-up and learn nothing from its failures.

[–] sictransitgloria@hexbear.net 22 points 3 days ago

let's try to emulate their success and also get rich, more like

[–] RedWizard@hexbear.net 28 points 3 days ago

Wait corporate sponsors? What do you mean? [Genuine]

[–] BeamBrain@hexbear.net 39 points 3 days ago (1 children)

What do they need that for when Reddit already exists

[–] Cowbee@hexbear.net 52 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Radlibbery pushes them off Reddit, be it the weird "Buy European" Euro-nationalists or those that left for the API crisis, etc. Very ill-developed politics, what happens when the system does what it does but you absolutely refuse to join an org and/or read theory with all your heart. Incomprehensible radicalism trapped within the net of liberalism.

A pretty long time ago, dev had personal life issues (not sure if that's the right phrasing sorry) Its been one year.

Mbin is the successor and seems to be doing well enough (not nearly in comparison to Lemmy + piefed tho, i think)

[–] Andrzej3K@hexbear.net 25 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I didn't know about any issues — just assumed it had petered out due to minimal buy in. I'm glad that these projects exist dgmw — the more the merrier — but it did always feel like the pitch was 'Lemmy without tankies' and not much else

[–] fxomt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 24 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (2 children)

I have no idea if kbin was meant as a 'lemmy without tankies' type alternative, but fwiw lemmy is 2019 and kbin is 2021.

But mbin the successor isn't concerned about that, the dev seems chill and doesn't really care about this type of stuff. Idk if their instance is defederated from you or not (you need to create an account to check, and i'm not in the mood tbh :D). Plus mbin is just very different in general, idk if it can/is even intended to be a replacement for Lemmy.

As for piefed, i've talked to rimu about this some time ago; off the top of my head, this is what i remember:

Piefed was started as a personal project, and had many biases in the code. Even not giving points for memes, and the algorithm pushing them down because he doesn't like memes. Also, he had something about removing 4chan-greentext posts? I can't remember the exact details.

To say it was flawed earlier would be an understatement. This was at the time when there were only ~1-2 instances besides the official one (and one was dead, anyway) so he didn't really give much thought about it. Though after a lot of complaints about all of these problems, he solved almost every one (this was after a lot of big instances like piefed.ca piefed.blahaj.zone piefed.zip etc were popping up, and admins were, including me, rightfully complaining about all of this).

And tbf piefed, despite its clear flaws, does have a lot of great features (post tags, user flairs, feeds, local user tags, and a lot of other miscellaneous stuff (the UI is bad tho, i'm sorry but its so hard to use lol)

I'm sure the dev could be convinced to revise the banlist. I don't know why it's still there, it should've been removed alongside the other "personal touches" but maybe he can be convinced.

Sorry if this was written sloppily its late lol. I'm not saying this is a good thing btw, i disagree with the default banlist, and i think it should be removed

[–] Alaskaball@hexbear.net 16 points 3 days ago

That's certainly an interesting perspective, thank you for sharing!

[–] Andrzej3K@hexbear.net 11 points 3 days ago

Thanks! Tbf I don't know whether kbin was meant that way, but it was certainly sold that way on Mastodon - at least from what I saw. There was this whole thing where Mastodon liberals started freaking out because they had been recommending Lemmy and then found out it was 'tankie'. Much rending of clothes etc etc

[–] Cowbee@hexbear.net 17 points 3 days ago

Ah, gotcha. Thanks!

Of course, history tells us that every single time you make a space where leftists aren't welcome, it becomes a 100% nazi space in moments. Then the libs start to wonder why their feed becomes nothing but nazi shit.

[–] machinya@hexbear.net 19 points 2 days ago

they have no consistency at all. where they get their blocklist from? most of them are the "common" blocked instances in popular blocklists but they don't even commit to that standard and just take a small amount of them. also, i think some of these instances are already defunct, making it even weirder.

the ones i identify from memory:

  • lemmygrad.ml: comunismus
  • gab.com: far right
  • exploding-heads.com: nazis
  • hexbear.net: trans comunismus
  • threads.net: big corporation
  • poa.st: far right harassers
  • freespeechextremist.com: name says it all
  • pawoo.net: trying to normalize pedofilia
  • spinster.xyz: terfs

piefed has been so obviously ideologically designed to suppress dissent, it auto-hides heavily downvoted comments in addition to the default banlists

it also has no public modlog that's usable so all censorship is lost in the wind

Putting the fed in Pyfedi

[–] darkcalling@hexbear.net 38 points 3 days ago (2 children)

Piefed only took off because people were furious at communists running lemmy. That's why I downvote all piefed shills (and there are a lot of them and it's obvious astroturfed, artificial and boosted by people pushing it for ideological reasons). For example there's a movies community on lemmy.world, someone has been spamming every post on there with "post this on and join the piefed version instead, there are more people" which doesn't make sense given its newer.

I never liked them or the kbin/mbin people. I just don't think there's enough room in this "reddit-like" discussion fediverse site space for multiple contenders and I want lemmy to win, not per se because the founders are of a similar ideology but because they don't censor ours. If lemmy's devs were libs but absolutely deranged genuine free speech types who didn't want to defederate from communists I'd be fine with people like that as well. But not corporate backed shills, not people who weep and sob about "Russian disinformation psyops" despite Russiagate being blown open as we speak as a partisan hitjob. And not people who want to wall off anyone with another opinion on China. So in that vein I feel any competitors are sucking limited oxygen including donation funds out of the space. The fediverse may be diverse with things like mastodon being a twitter-clone but there needs to be some centralization to get a stable version of each type of fediverse thing including I think of the discussion-board type, reddit/digg type site.

I am so fed up with these people running a smear campaign on top of everything else, meanwhile their whole place is a straight up nazi bar.

I'm an anarchist and have done organizing around that for years, and generally these types of people I give a wide berth because they're usually very unstable with sheltered worldview and online to the point of talking in meme references IRL.

idk i hate python and php, but we've already got minimum 3 leftist lemmy instances and their userbases are dedicated enough. there are few liberals who even want to use fediverse instead of reddit but the ones who do are the most annoying of the bunch. if they wanna act like redditors elsewhere i hope they do.

[–] Barabas@hexbear.net 27 points 3 days ago

This explains why there were several posts about how great piefed is on the all feed (don't really bother changing it since it is mostly Hexbear with a sprinkle of Lemmygrad anyway).

python and flask

Why would you use maybe the one worse language than rust

[–] CHOPSTEEQ@lemmy.ml 41 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I am NOT taking this bait 😤

[–] mathemachristian@hexbear.net 29 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago) (1 children)

Oh but wouldn't it be sooo juicy?? Have you noticed the C# profile pic?

[–] sleeplessone@lemmy.ml 12 points 3 days ago (1 children)

While I will not stand the Rust slander, C# is good at being a non-shitty Java. I wouldn't use it for a personal project if I can avoid it because M$, but it's tolerable to work with at the day job.

[–] TrashGoblin@hexbear.net 7 points 2 days ago

This is the completely correct position on C# in every detail.

[–] dead@hexbear.net 20 points 3 days ago (2 children)

You have C# as your avatar. C# is a language that ripped off Java and is owned by Microsoft. C# is the worst language by far.

[–] ThermonuclearEgg@hexbear.net 14 points 3 days ago

Of course, Java is now owned by "former" CIA Project Oracle...

[–] Cysioland@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 2 days ago

Fun fact: Lemmy is written in Rust

[–] SootySootySoot@hexbear.net 7 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

I adore Python (and flask), but I'll be honest, I would never use it to host an actually efficient server. Python is unparalleled for prototyping and small fun projects, it's not great for running a >100 user production webserver. Hosting costs alone will just be way more than necessary.

[–] godlessworm@hexbear.net 20 points 3 days ago

i don't know what that is but they don't deserve to see our posts anyway, they're not worthy.

[–] sleeplessone@lemmy.ml 12 points 3 days ago

On the bright side, at least they block threads.
