And I wish the world was less dystopian, but here we are

TV doesn't have to be representative of our situation

So, he’s bringing back The Orville, right?

6 years for 36 episodes, is an extremely long time. as said by pallacki(the co-lead) in a podcast, she said her and others working on the shows couldnt afford living off in between scant seasons in hollywood. its also a problem with other shows who do 1-2 years between season, and only 6-8 episodes per seasons, its networks not wanting to spend too much money for a well written show.

I hope not.

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world -3 points 2 days ago

And reverting the last two pretty dystopian seasons?

[–] AmazingAwesomator@lemmy.world 31 points 2 days ago

then make more orville. it is conscious-positive, expands moral insight, and talks about things kept quiet.

it is an overall good for humanity.

Dystopian fictions are comforting compared to how the world is faring these days. At least fictional dystopias are set to have a viable solution.

[–] BedSharkPal@lemmy.ca 12 points 2 days ago

There's something to this. I have much less interest in light hearted content these days. But I also refuse to watch the handmaids tale since it's a little too real for me.

[–] Zorque@lemmy.world 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Depends on the dystopia, lots don't have viable solutions to the dystopia, just living a little less shittily.

[–] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 19 points 2 days ago

I've always found the cyberpunk dystopias to be a kind of magical realism precisely because they are so intractable.

The villains are always ten steps ahead. The system of oppression never seems to falter or contradict itself. The plucky rebels always have a nefarious super secret mole in their midst.

IRL, our businesses and governments are riddled with flaws. They're staffed with legions of lazy and incompetent bureaucrats. They are constantly getting caught with their pants down.

What really keeps the system going is inertia. Too many people are afraid of banging into the security state. Too many people feel like they, personally, have too much to lose in resistance and nothing to gain from a revolution. Too many people are simply pessimist - convinced the hell they know must be better than an uncertain future.

I feel the same way. It seemed to all change 9/11 and never really recovered. Then again, art just reflects our reality.

[–] Quill7513@slrpnk.net 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

art also influences reality. creating art that presents overthrowing the shackles of fascism as fun and rewarding is important

[–] FlexibleToast@lemmy.world 0 points 2 days ago

Well, they've been doing that for decades now and it isn't working.

[–] svcg@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 2 days ago

As a trans person, I really hope Seth MacFarlane stops making television.

[–] Tollana1234567@lemmy.today 1 points 1 day ago

his shows was always to paroday how dark everything is, whats changed? he needs a wider target audience for his shows?

[–] njm1314@lemmy.world 16 points 2 days ago

It's weird he says this considering how mean and cruel most of his characters are. Like it's been a while since I've watched anything made by him, but I remember everyone being a dick to each other basically the entire time.

Oh, I've lost hope for humanitys future and it's not because of fiction.

[–] TheThrillOfTime@lemmy.ml 11 points 2 days ago

Art mimics life.

It was disappointing when Joe Pera Talks With You was canceled because it filled this gap. Same with How To With John Wilson honestly. At least with How To, it was John's own choice to end it when he felt like ending it. Talks With You had so much further to go yet with it's characters and setting.

Anyway, both felt really hopeful and kind, and I miss that in television a lot of days.

[–] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 10 points 2 days ago

Cosmos was very hopeful, but it’s also kind of depressing to watch now when Carl says he believes Humanity will pull together instead of sailing over the brink.

I'm here for that. The new Superman was a breath of fresh air, not just because it was an incomparably better representation of the character than Man Of Steel's version but because it was so hopeful.

[–] BurgerBaron@piefed.social 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Make more Naked Gun and I'll be slightly happier.

[–] kautau@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don’t know if you’re aware, and if not boy do I have news for you

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLguU7WLreA

But also, yes, I think it was pretty well done and could use more terribly hilarious cop comedies

[–] BurgerBaron@piefed.social 1 points 2 days ago

I do know! Seth MacFarlane worked on the new one. Saw his name when they rolled credits as Producer.

[–] MrTrono@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago

Well I wish reality wasn't so dystopian.

[–] mavu@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 2 days ago

I wholeheartedly agree

[–] Wazowski@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

Nah, bruv. Shit is pretty dark these days. Seems apt that our stories reflect reality.

[–] Pjonathan@lemmy.world 1 points 2 days ago

Sadly some of the best TV is dystopian and pessimistic.
